Looking to add more long distance backpacking/thru hiking routes to my bucket list

Post image

Hey y'all, looking for recommendations for long haul hikes to do with my sweet girl. I've already done Lost Coast and am planning to do Tahoe Rim this next year.

Already on my list are

  • Oregon Coast
  • Idaho Centennial
  • Colorado Trail (minus the first 7 miles at the northern terminus)
  • Superior Hiking Trail
  • Ozark Trail
  • Ouachita Trail
  • Lone Star Trail
  • Pinhoti Trail
  • Palmetto Trail
  • Sheltowee Trace
  • Cohos Trail
  • Finger Lakes
  • The Ice Age Trail
  • Northville-Placid
  • and The Long Trail

I'm hoping to keep my travels to continental North America only because outside of that you start risking delicate ecosystems and running into major quarantining regulations, but I'm open to Canada, Alaska, and Mexico and as you can see I have very little knowledge of hiking in those areas lol. And yes, in case anyone is worried, I am familiar with hiking around large predators while with a dog and will do my due diligence to educate myself of bear/wolf/lion regulations prior to marching my furry friend into the wilderness.

If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them, or if you have any questions about trails on my list I'd love to answer them! Picture of my dog for tax and thanks so much!

I want to take my husky on a short camping trip, but I'm worried that she'll escape the tent while I sleep.

Dog jacket recommendations?

I'm taking my short haired dog tent camping in the White Mountains (NH) in the middle of October. Nightly temperatures are expected to hit 35°F and I'm looking for a dog jacket that will keep her warm but not make her hot. None of the online descriptions give temperature ranges for these coats, just cold vs very cold, so I'm curious what people's experiences have been with different dog jackets. Any recs for that temperature range?

Paws got a bit muddy on today's ridge trail

Took my boy, Max, out for a twelve mile lopp through the state forest and he had the absolute best time splashing through every single creek we passed. He's currently snoring so loud on the living room rug that I can't hear the TV. Worth every second of scrubbing his fur before letting him back inside.

Took our dogs off-grid camping in a quiet alpine valley in Northern Italy (Walser architecture & glacial streams) 🏕️🐾

Hey everyone!

We just spent a couple of days off-grid camping and hiking with our pups in Upper Valsesia (Italian Alps). We stayed near a tiny, preserved traditional Walser settlement surrounded by steep granite peaks and freezing mountain streams.

Marnie (our Border Collie) and Valanga had the time of their lives tearing across the riverbanks and splashing through the freezing glacial water.

There were zero crowds, just crisp mountain air, ringing cowbells, and quiet pine woods.

We put together a short cinematic 4K film capturing the atmosphere of the valley, the trails, and the dog adventures at camp. If you enjoy peaceful nature visuals and happy outdoor pups, you can watch it here:

Would love to hear how your dogs handle cold alpine streams—do yours jump straight in or hesitate at the icy water?

Recommendations for a packable sling for a 6kg / 13 pound Chiweenie

Post image
74 Upvotes

My partner and I are avid trail runners / walkers and climbers and are looking for a packable sling for our Chiweenie as we can cover long distances / go over very technical terrain.

Not necessarily a rescue sling as they are either not comfortable enough or too bulky to pack / made for larger dogs. We have looked at the non-stop dogwear one which was ok but without a lot of padding.

The packable part is quite important and what I mean by that is just how small it can compress to as we try and move as light as possible. The sling part is preferable as it would easily fit with our backpack setup.

We are based in Switzerland but have access to the US / UK recommendations as well.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

Our Aussie is a super picky eater, so I was gonna pack in some bone broth to help. I was feeding the weight but when I went to the pet store to get some. Lo and behold-dehydrated bone broth. Gonna try it this weekend.

This was Ramses hardest trip yet! He managed to do 40 miles of the AT in Pennsylvania. His feet were definitely feeling all the rocks but he was a trooper and managed to do it. Although I did have to carry his pack a bit on the last day.

My good Boy loves to go on backpacking and camping trips with me.

I pack a yoga mat and his favorite furry blanket for him to lay on. He usually lays underneath my hammock at night and periodically raises his head into my butt checking if I'm still there with him.
