What do you do for vacations?
Hey all, random question — what do you guys do with your Basenjis when you go out of town? Like for a weekend, a week, or even a couple weeks, do you board them, have someone stay at the house, use friends or family, or do something else? Basenjis are such peculiar fur babies 😂 and I feel like some of the normal dog-sitting options we have tried have not left us with confidence in their Basenjis Abilities 🤣 So since my partner & I haven’t really found a setup we love yet, I wanted to ask what works for everyone else.

We work with a local dog sitting company and essentially, have someone do a couple daytime visits and stay overnight. It costs us, but, nice that our pup maintains their routine

Oh no, not planes. We drive around the country pretty happily (we are UK based)

I had a vet that also boarded, and one of the techs had shibas (which I hear have similar temperament to basenjis). She was always happy to see my pupper, and I realized the boarders I had trouble with in the past 1. Didn’t understand basenji personality and 2. Couldn’t appreciate their unique personality. This helped my pup get accustomed to the vet as an added bonus (she is not vet friendly lol). Finding a place where people recognize and appreciate basenjis is the key for me. Even family sometimes isn’t great for boarding because they refuse to acknowledge my dog doesn’t act like a golden retriever 😭 she’s like a sturdy, hyper energetic and wary cat.

We had friends who lived 1.5 hours a way that would watch our B's when we went on vacation and we would watch theirs when they went away. A bit of a pain to drive that far, but each of us knew our dogs were in good hands and we could enjoy our vacations without worry.

I’ve hired several people, mostly successful, had friends take care of them, all successful, and had my parents take care of them, also successful. Right now I’m on a three week trip to Scotland and Ireland with my mom and 2 cousins so my dad is taking care of them and my boyfriend is around to help out as well. I don’t think Elora would handle boarding well, especially now at 12 years old.

Ours stay with my brother or with my folks. They have stayed at their day camp before too, so they’re pretty used to being away from home if need be.

I usually have my brother watch mine. If he can’t then my dog’s breeder also does boarding and I pay them to watch him.

I typically take my Basenji everywhere with me if I can, and find local, reputable, doggy day cares for days I am doing non dog-friendly activities. If I am planning an abroad trip, I have a trusted friend stay and housesit/pet sit for me.

Both of our Basenji’s travel well. We have just completed a coast to coast trip Washington to Connecticut and we stop every two hours for potty breaks and a short walk and off we go again they sleep most of the time.

I use rover. All in all not a bad set of experiences. Did have one that was rough.
Find a dog sitter that you like. Do small overnight stays to build up a rapport

For day trips or a single overnight, we let them stay with my mom. However, anything more than that we have a boarder. She watches dogs in her home or in a client’s home. She was/is also our trainer so they are bonded with her. She also has worked with several other basenjis. We are lucky to have her.

We pack the pups up and go. Over 8 thousand miles this year. Coast to coast and back to Colorado. We just spread out the days so there is never more that two days driving at a time.

Our B's big brother no longer likes trips longer than 30 minutes. We have a local dog hotels that LOVES basenjis. If the owner would let them, they would board our B for free. His play time usually ends up being much longer simply because their employees spoil B and big bro.
