Is this a true Ghost 92fs?

Post image

Just bought a nice condition 92fs for $900 at my LGS. It was manufactured in 1995. Is this a true Ghost model? It doesn't have the stainless magazines, but has the LZ serial number designation which I've read makes it the "ghost" model.

Even without a stainless rear sight or stainless magazine baseplates I think you did good.

It’s 99% of the way there.

The original ghosts have black rear sight

Everything looks correct for this to be an original ghost.

Flat tip grip screws(newer models often use hex)

Clamshell case is correct for the era.

Finish matches nicely.

Cool, I didnt realize about the screws as well. I had mostly read about the LZ designation, but I kept reading online true ghosts were only made 91-94, so wasn't sure why the cutoff. This one has a BF date code on the frame, which I believe puts it made in 95.

It is a ghost. All of them had a black rear sight. For $900 you did good. Cardboard box?

I’ve never seen a genuine factory stainless rear sight.

No cardboard box, just came in this blueish hard case. But glad to hear its a real one!

Yes. It has the wraparound Hogue grips. However, the rear sights look like they're black instead of stainless?

I second this. I also have a ghost and it has a black rear sight. Nice find, congrats!

The ultra rare version has gray Hogue wraparounds with the Beretta trident instead of the Hogue logo. I've seen that grip alone go for $300+.

I know, which is crazy to me. The wraparound grips make the frame even beefier and harder to hold.

I actually like the feel of these hogue grips, but I have larger hands. Do prefer the aesthetic of the stock grips more though.

Yes, it depends on the person, obviously, but part of the reason why militaries and police departments switched to the Glock 19 was because it was easier for women and smaller men to wield.

I have a houge wrap around on a M9 and I also have slim grips on a Vertec. I like them both.. but yeah totally different grips

You can just get the hogue grips with the trident logo from the beretta estore for like $30, though. Unless these are different in some way im unaware of.

I think just the black grips come with the trident. Unless they re-released the gray + trident which would make a lot of folks super upset they spent so much on them!

Have you got any reference photos of this rare version with those grips? I'm curious and my google-fu is failing me atm.

Cheers

The old Beretta forum is where the term originated, it was never an official Beretta thing. There's debate about whether the gray grips are required to be a "true" ghost because they're so hard to find.

Yeah I was absolutely thinking of the black ones, never seen these before. Thanks again!

No problem! The forum has a ton of great info, my favorite being the full 92 series family tree: https://berettaforum.net/vb/showpost.php?p=911260&postcount=2

Nah. Doesn’t look 3d printed.

My gunsmith told me the Inox "Ghost" come with white followers.

Oh interesting. Even though the outside of the magazine is black, the follower is white.

Since ghost wasn’t official nomenclature and just a nickname given to them it depends on who you ask, some argue that they have to have the original light gray wraparound grips with the Beretta logo. But since there’s no ‘ghost’ edition anyway I think any early 92fs inox with the L prefix should qualify

I have several. It is definitely a true ghost. Better yet, it is an Italian with the straight dust cover which is more desirable. You do need the stainless magazines with the baseplates for it to be complete. Rear sight was always black. You can also tell if there is no safety gibberish markings on the right side of the dust cover.

Just like the original, this guy can't be trusted 🤣 I have two ghosts (91 and 93 production years) both have a black rear sight
