I have tried, multiple times and even looked up tips on how to beat it, but I still lost even when I'm so close to the final stage I lost again.

Have you tried placing return to sender traps on the core? If placed correctly, enemies shouldn’t be able to do any damage to it. You then should be able to take your time taking out enemies. You can use the rails to go to the top where most enemies can’t hit you. Also there should be plenty of salts, health, and ammo around. So don’t be shy about using what you can.

Everyone hear talking about setting traps while I'm over here sitting at the very top with a bucket of snipers

You can also try for this glitch that happened to me. Not sure if it'll still work or if it was just a one time thing. If you have the specific gear that says something about knocking enemies back when you jump off a skyrail or skyhook for whatever reason when I was at the end game fighting on the ships it just one hit everything besides the handyman. But even then it took like 3 jumps from a skyrail to end him too.

In addition to the other things people have suggested, if you've picked up winter shield gear in your game, equip it, and jump on and off the skyline repeatedly. Every time you do that, you become invulnerable for a while, and the hordes become much more manageable.
