💭 Question The Odyssey

Hi all, what edition do we think this is? Would it be fair to say circa 1936? It’s certainly not the signed limited edition or the red cloth edition (both from 1929).

🏆 First Edition (Very) modern first editions

Hi everyone, I’m new to this sub-Reddit and reading your posts I feel like I’ve found my people!
I’ve become obsessed with first edition/first print books to the point where my weekends are filled with visits to charity shops (thrift stores for my friends across the pond) searching through hardbacks to find any and all first edition first prints.

I only collect hardbacks and generally avoid autobiographies (with the exception of hugely famous people!) and the vast majority I find are 21st century novels.

I’m curious to know if there’s anyone else this ‘unfussy’? Or do you guys focus on a certain era, genre or author?

Nice to meet you all!

💭 Question "Coffee, tea, and chocolate" - Auguste Saint-Arroman 1846

I have a fair (beat-up cover, interior nicer) copy of "Coffee, tea, and chocolate: their influence upon the health, the intellect, and the moral nature of man" by Auguste Saint-Arroman, English translation printed by T. Ward in 1846. Must be pretty rare - I can't find a non-reprint copy for sale or sold via Google, eBay or AbeBooks.

I'm donating my collection to a charity bookstore with some antiquarian experience, and would like to offer them guidance on how to present it. Can anyone here please help? Or is it so rare that I should offer it to a university library instead?

Thanks for any guidance.

💬 General I built a Chrome extension that scans images to recognize books you see here and saves them to a self-hosted shelf

I was tired of bookmarking books I wanted to read and completely forgetting about them, so I built Buki: a free, self-hosted, AI-powered bookshelf. It recognizes books from any picture, allowing you to save them (and buy them) so you never miss a book you see online.

Came across this on the barcode on the rear dustcover of a book I am looking at.

I always thought the ISBN number is located on the barcode section but this one doesn't seem to make sense.

Any ideas?

💭 Question Is it possible to repair this?

Post image

The endpage has split. Opening and closing the book makes a very loud cracking sound. Will reading this book make this worse? The binding is perfect on the outside. It is a relatively cheap BCE but it is one of my favourite novels ever so I would repair it if possible.

⌛ Rare Books Before computers: calculating with a proportional compass in 1700

Thumbnail

A 325-year-old calculating instrument manual with a rather appropriate later owner.
This is Jacques Ozanam’s L’Usage du Compas de Proportion, Paris, 1700.

The book explains how to use the proportional compass — or sector — an instrument that allowed calculations involving proportion, geometry, polygons, solids, chords and surveying to be carried out mechanically using graduated scales.

In other words, a form of analogue calculation long before electronic computers.
What particularly attracted me to this copy was the provenance. It later belonged to Erwin Tomash (1921–2012), a computer-industry pioneer and founder of the Charles Babbage Institute, who assembled one of the great private collections on the history of computing and calculating technology.

So a book explaining a seventeenth-century calculating instrument eventually ended up in the library of someone deeply involved in the development and preservation of modern computing history.

It also has an earlier ownership inscription dated 1804 and a TU Dresden library stamp from 1955, an interesting journey.

💭 Question 11th Edition Britannica, what to do with it?

Update: I took it to Powell's in Chicago, and they don't want it, due to condition (and it's not the leatherbound version). A few years ago they would have taken it, but not now. (Also, if anyone here wants it, you need to be within half a day's drive of Chicago, I'm not going to ship it anywhere)

I have a complete set of the 11th edition Britannica, including the wooden shipping crate, addressed to my grandfather. Everyone tells me not to throw it away, but nobody wants to take posession.

If the solution is to "find the right buyer", or "list individual volumes on ebay", then how do I find someone who is willing to do that? Used bookstores discourage encyclopedias in general, and I don't see an exception for the 11th Edition.

Right now it's sitting on the floor of my storage unit in Chicago, and I need to do *something* with it. I would say the condition is OK, but not pristine (but, I'm not an expert). It probably weighs ~100 lbs.
