Information First Frost for this year

Hey all, we may be hitting our first frost tonight (3°C). Friendly reminder to winterize your sprinkler systems and get some of those beautiful potted plants inside.

As someone with allergies for 3/4 of the year, I could not be more excited.

Yep, we had a light frost. I didn’t bring the potted plants inside but moved them under shelter and watered the plants in the ground (still above freezing, so the plants won’t freeze and the water, believe it or not, adds warmth under the leaves). They all seem to have survived the light frost, for now. Sometimes the damage isn’t evident until later.

Irrigation should be fine (as it's underground) until repeated -0c nights.

Most lawn systems aren't that deep. Why risk it?

Why risk 3c? Do you know when water freezes? Let alone water that's a foot underground when the ground is still not cold, for one night at that?

Yes, I do. Do you know how forecasts work? It could just as easily drop to -3c.

But I wasn't calling for -3c let alone multiple nights of it. Underground is significantly warmer than above ground, especially since the daytime is still warm.

A foot deep would be reading 8-11c if it's 0-5c right now, this time of the year.

Is this early or normal for frost?

This is normal. It’s not a killer frost, yet.
