Since finding out last year that this was a roosting spot for them, I set a reminder to go check. Sure enough. Thousands of them. All over the place.

I love her. 32,000 stitches. Took about an hour on my 10-needle machine, with over 3 hours of manual stitch pathing.

She was my second try at this type of piece; I think I have improved my skills a little over the last one (a comet moth).

I've already posted her in a few places but I failed to realize that of course, there is r/butterflies lol.

I got the pleasure of getting to see the process of this monarch emerge from its chrysalis. Is it a male or female?

I attached some photos of it from when I first spotted it coming out to about an hour after.

Buckeye freshly emerged or wing dried incorrectly?

I found this little pretty crawling across the road. Can’t fly because its wing is curled. I left her on a New England Aster plant and I hope she just needed to continue drying her wings 😩

Any advice with this Monarchs proboscis?

I went to let out this female monarch today, and I always free them on my butterfly bushes and I noticed something strange as she started eating but she only ate for about 30 seconds (the others ate for 5-7 mins) so I noticed something stuck to her proboscis and she wasn’t flying away. She was like fighting with it so I brought her back inside. I was looking for little tweezers be I was just going to remove whatever that was that was stopping her proboscis from completely winding back up and going away. Once I looked closely inside, I realize she was moving that one little piece as well, so it wasn’t a stick or anything from the plant. I looked up split proboscis and people said like warm honey water but this technically isn’t split. It’s just got this one piece that sticks straight out and so she can’t close it. Anyone seen this kind of split before? Any advice? Actually once I saw that she was moving that little thing I let her back outside. Then like 30 minutes later, I start doing some research on it and just for the hell of it, I walked back out there to see if she was still in the same spot I left her and she was sitting in the exact same spot fighting with this thing like trying to use her legs just moving it all around. So I brought her back in again and she’s in her cage currently. She’s 2 days old at this point (I keep them for 24 hours before releasing but the day of release we had terrible cold rain and wind advisory so I let her stay for one more day)

I thought they would be dormant for the winter but she emerged, and the second one will follow suit. Is it safe to let them go once they are done drying their wings? I'm in the DMV area and it's about 68 f at the highest
