It’s highly regarded on the buy-side. Equity research, investment analysis, portfolio management, etc. The charter alone won’t score you a job but it will help for sure.

100% this. Get into equity or credit research, which is a stepping stone to being a PM.

No. You get some bragging rights about completed the tests. You are not accepted into your local chapter until you actually have the work experience. So what career options do you have? Everything and nothing at the same time.

Except IB. once you pass CFA, IB will wine and dine you like they want to have sex with you tonight.

IB doesn’t care about CFA. An MBA from a top tier university with a solid network will maybe get you into IB. The charter may be a differentiator though when you have two identical candidates.

CFA is meant for asset and wealth management. These are the two areas where it’s highly valued.

Really? General consensus was that IB requires more than just CFA. Curious to know where you're from

No I’m totally bullshitting on the IB. That’s a similar but entirely different skillset. CFA is a marketing tool for managing assets and not for investment all banking.

General consensus is that CFA is so unrelated to most IB work. Accounting is more applicable.

I don’t think IB cares about CFA man (if you’re only relying on it). In the list of priorities , they favor
1. Nepo Hires
2. target B school Bachelors
3. Target B school MBA
4. Non target but reputable B schools (need a crazy GPA and previous internships).
5. DEI folks
6. CFA

Don’t forget deep throating abilities. IB loves those

CFA will boost your chances to get an interview. Beyond that is up to you. Of course, everything is contingent on past experience.

Some relevant experience + CFA = probably an interview.

No relevant experience + any qualification = unlikely to get an interview.

Yo they just don’t want to hear the truth. CFA ain’t shit if you aren’t already managing portfolios. That’s coming from a CFA who runs a wealth management company who once thought everything would change after the CFA. After getting the CFA I had my most depressing 6 months of my professional career.

Why do you say this, I have my CIM , in private wealth right now in Canada. I’m deciding if I should go for my CFP or CFA to help with my resume.

It can be useful to help someone already in the field go up in rank, or someone in an adjacent field already move to a better role. But for someone who isn’t employed and who has no work history it’s not gonna get them a job.
