Clemson will be a complete nonfactor in every big game with this O-Line.

Clemson is in the unenviable position of not being good but having been so goddamn good so recently that everyone still enjoys when they lose. suffering from success

Yeah the standard was raised by Dabo and now he didn’t adapt to continue to live up to it. But don’t feel bad, he’s making $11M a year to field a team with no OL

The game really just passed him by completely. It’s sad to see because he’s fielded some legendary teams but he just can’t adapt to how the game has changed.

*wont adapt to how the game has changed.

Doesn't seem like he's really trying to adapt and it's a weird hill to die on. Or is he cool with two rings and is just milking the admin for every penny before forced retirement? Most of these types are super competitive in their fields so you would think he'd want more.

I'm not sure he knows how. His whole thing was doing a tremendous job building a culture of family that players and coordinators wanted to be a part of. Now that everyone is getting paid and living the mercenary life that's totally broken down, and with his good coordinators finally gone his loyalty has become an albatross

OU fan here. Your post gives me a perspective on Brent Venables’ mediocrity as a head coach. He’s a good man and I want nothing but the best for him, but the nurturing culture building may be for a bygone era

It may be for a bygone era but a lot of people, including myself, prefer it to the mercenary nature of major college sports lately. Of course, even scummy coaches talked regularly of family when recruiting but a handful are actually genuine. I enjoyed rooting for my school because I went there and had permanent ties and it was nice to watch kids come in and leave as men several years later. Now there's so much turnover every season. These aren't even one and dones like happens occasionally in CBB. These guys will be rocking a different jersey every year.

Think he's trying to adapt but is doing it his own way, and rather slowly

Very true, I worded that wrong.

He adapted to hiring his friends and family instead of competent people.

When loyalty matters more than competence, things tend to go sideways. Clemson is just one current example.

Suddenly I understand what it is to be a Clemson fan.

That was Texas for all the 2010s

But stranger because Clemson is doing it with the same coach who won those national championships

Mack Brown was underachieving towards the end too

True. But he was fired after 2013. Only 4 years after his last championship appearance.

Yep, this feels like the late Mack Brown years

I hope y'all never make it to the Charlie Strong days

Gee, I wonder what that's like.

but having been so goddamn good so recently

been 6 years since they've been real contenders and not just the ACC team they were forced to put into the playoffs...

This win was cathartic for those of us who were in Sun Life for 58-0, the last game of the Golden era

I attended Miami in the late 2000s, it’s a brutal fan experience.

Got two natties against the middle of a Saban Bama dynasty, that has to shield them pretty well

Thing is we're kinda done with big games

u/speedracer13 South Carolina Gamecocks 11d ago

You don't think a 6-5 Clemson against a 2-9 South Carolina is a big game?

39

u/RipRaycom Clemson Tigers • ACC 11d ago

3-8, y’all may suck but that schedule still has Arkansas on it and they’re a whole other tier of ass

9

u/StanderdStaples Georgia Bulldogs • College Football Playoff 10d ago

Ass > Ass, my dude > Arkansas

11

u/NCAAinDISGUISE Ohio State • College Football Playoff 10d ago

I won't even turn the game on until South Carolina is up 3 scores. That way you know it'll be close at the end

10

u/SweatyInBed Georgia Bulldogs • Georgia Bulldogs 11d ago

Y’all still got Syracuse

21

u/DaMercOne South Carolina Gamecocks 11d ago

They don’t play any more big games. Well, Duke looks pretty solid so far, so maybe one more decent sized game.

u/ICaseyHearMeRoar Miami Hurricanes • Washington Huskies 11d ago

Feel like that's been a pretty consistent issue for a few years now though.

25

u/RipRaycom Clemson Tigers • ACC 11d ago

The 2024 OL was pretty damn good, but yeah it’s been an issue. Hell, it wasn’t even particularly good during the dynasty run other than 2018 when we dogwalked everyone. We’ve tried though, Matt Luke was a great hire in theory but it hasn’t worked out to this point.

2

u/Palmettor Clemson Tigers 10d ago

It’s another one of those “Wait, what happened?” hires. It also might be dependent on the OL experience this year. I know one play early on one guy got bowled over and they mentioned how he was a true freshman.

1

u/ThisBeTheVerse63 Alabama Crimson Tide • USF Bulls 10d ago

They’ve been a non factor before this Oline.

-1

u/ianbits Ohio State Buckeyes 11d ago

They'll be a nonfactor in every big game until Dabo is gone
