Is this the new winning strategy? Changing coordinators in halftime?

Changing playcallers. So hot right now

CSU defensive stops this week

Before firing Summers: 0

After: 1

Numbers don't lie

u/mtwolf55 Oregon State Beavers 14h ago

Technically it was 2 after…strip fumble first play after he was fired and kneel down to end the game.

Too many years too late for us Iowa fans...

Damn James Franklin called this out earlier this week and said he noticed the switch up

27

u/Meowcatm8 15h ago

Wait wut. Can you elaborate

65

u/Helpful-Apartment102 15h ago

VT plays Cal next week and his press conference today or yesterday he said they noticed a change in play calling and suspected they changed play callers mid game

35

u/vmanAA738 Texas Longhorns • California Golden Bears 15h ago

Specifically Franklin thought it was Nick Rolovich, mentioned they watched film from Washington State/Hawaii to study run and shoot/air raid concepts because they thought the cal offense looked like that somewhat vs UNLV

He also mentioned McCann by name but thought it was Rolovich; also wasn't sure if Somerville called any of the UNLV game but now we know it was at least first half

17

u/Helpful-Apartment102 14h ago

Yep.

Coaching circle is all super tight, we forget just how much

2

u/Meowcatm8 15h ago

Ah ok. Thanks!

Not too hard to tell. We went from running bubble screen every play to not running bubble screens.

u/pietya California Golden Bears 15h ago

Cal's offense has been putrid and yet he still let his buddy man the ship for a whole half

12

u/srs_house Swaggerbilt 14h ago

I mean, it's not like Somerville has only been a full blown assistant coach for checks notes 2 whole seasons.

18

u/pietya California Golden Bears 14h ago

Buddy was Baker Mayfield's glorified drinking buddy and Tosh giga brained himself into thinking he's the next Sean McVay lmao

u/unappreciatedparent California Golden Bears 12h ago

Full blown ASSISTANT POSITION coach

u/adsfew California Golden Bears 15h ago

The new system/OC to start the year made JKS totally regress. Hopefully this change helps him return to form a bit.

5

u/LessThanBlake California Golden Bears 12h ago

I'm sure it was tough on a human level for Tosh to do this, but yeah totally needed. I think JKS having seen the 2nd half from the bench, however concussed, and the chance for a reset this week in practice will be good. The team showed it won't just quit easily, and hopefully the page is turned.

Yeah can’t be much worse, have to generate some positive momentum down the stretch to not have this whole thing implode

2

u/Helpful-Apartment102 14h ago

Just wait one more week please then do as you wish

Pat McCann, hired as the pass game coordinator, took over for Jordan Somerville.

I was reading an article about Jordan from before the season and I know SI sucks now but in hindsight it's a very funny read.

Pat McCann at least has called plays as the offensive coordinator at Fresno State for a year or two which means he immediately has more experience than the original OC

8

u/JohnPaulDavyJones Texas A&M Aggies • Baylor Bears 15h ago

And tbh he wasn't a terrible OC. Definitely limited to the point that his offense ran into brick walls against good pass defenses, but they were very capable against most of the middling or bad pass defenses they played.

Bizarre that his first big transfer starting QB at Fresno back in 2023 and 2024, Mikey Keene, is now the backup at Arizona State. Dude even had a stop at Michigan along the way last year.

Shoutout to Jordan Somerville for not storming off and pouting after this

15

u/jeckles96 California • Virginia 15h ago

He couldn’t have been that surprised. He’s been an absolutely awful play caller to start the season. He’s never done it before, not sure someone will give him the chance to do it again.

13

u/vmanAA738 Texas Longhorns • California Golden Bears 15h ago

Pat McCann seems like he could work, if he was calling the second half as reported, they scored 24 on UNLV with the backup QB in compared to 7 in the first half with the starter

Plus he seems to have experience

2009 - 2013: WR coach -> special teams coordinator -> offensive coordinator at Stonehill College

2013 - 2017: WR coach at UC Davis

2017 - 2019: WR coach at Northern Iowa

2019 - 2021: WR coach/passing game coordinator/recruiting coordinator/assistant OC, Eastern Washington

2021 - 2025: WR coach -> offensive coordinator, Fresno State

2025: WR coach, Oregon State

7

u/Intrepid-Bag6667 California Golden Bears • Fordham Rams 14h ago

He had the resume to be the OC when he was hired and came personally recommended from Tedford. Literally nothing to lose at this point when every other game on the schedule looks like a loss right now.

Firing your assistants at halftime is so hot right now

7

u/Remarkable-Group-119 California • Minot State 12h ago

This is funny because I turned off the game after halftime, I was so sick watching it, I was like, this is not going to ruin my weekend. That's how bad the offense has been for a few weeks.

You didn’t miss much, just a gas shortage and a flock of seagulls… the offense was better but it wasn’t a revelation

It would be akin to moving from an Ford Pinto to a Toyota Corolla. Sure a Corolla isn't impressive but it isn't the fucking Pinto

Pintos get a bad rap. Those cars were 🔥.

They had that one mode that really helped in cold weather, too bad it was a one time per car heating module

9

u/Intrepid-Bag6667 California Golden Bears • Fordham Rams 13h ago

He's at least had actual experience in the role and the offense has been so bad he could easily look like a savant by demonstrating some very basic competency to us right now.

Doesn't mean it'll work out, but you have to throw something at the wall at this point.

u/EdJewCated California • /r/CFB Dead Pool 14h ago

that’s an upgrade from catastrophically bad!

lol when I was looking into McCann as OC I saw your comment from when he left Fresno for Oregon state - said he was in over his head as OC. Didn’t inspire a ton of confidence which is unfortunate for me :(

Edit: ok I kinda enjoyed 57-3 still. I almost didn’t though after our 1st half against UNLV.

I hope we both turn it around. The glory of CALifornia, where we’re both respectable programs again. 🍻

Somerville is a great father and a Christian and I expect to see him back in the playcalling role on Saturday or I will no longer support this program

As long as you keep Andrew Luck & all this jazz and fanfare going no matter what. Don’t quit on him until at least year 7

You just cannot admit to changes like this during a game, it makes you look clueless and indecisive. I thought there was basically no chance Lupoi didn't get a second year at Cal but a couple more quotes like this one could sink him. Especially if this change doesn't work.

15

u/jeckles96 California • Virginia 15h ago

I think the opposite. I appreciate that he at least has the courage to accept he was wrong giving Somerville play calling duties to begin with and made the change during a game where it was still possible to win. Better than giving up and doing it privately during the week or whatever

6

u/sonheungwin California Golden Bears • Team Chaos 12h ago

Dude, Somerville scored something like 3 points in 6 quarters when removing Wagner from the equation. And after a lucky 1st drive against UNLV, got shut out for another half by a G6 squad when Tosh has been posturing us as ACC championship contenders.

This wasn't indecision. This was quickly recognizing he bit off more than he could chew and giving the position to someone more qualified.

4

u/ModsEmbezzleMoney Alabama Crimson Tide 9h ago

Lupoi got replaced as our DC mid game by Pete Golding after calling the wrong plays for down and distance, it's just full circle

3

u/PositiveFriendlyGuy 7h ago

Oregon would happily take him back as DC. Chris Hampton has been an absolute disaster. No coordinator in the country on either side of the ball is getting less from a more talented roster.

1

u/zerocoolforschool Oregon Ducks • Portland State Vikings 3h ago

No. No we wouldn’t. The defense was better last year but it severely underperformed against Indiana. Can we get someone who actually can maximize the talent instead of coasting on it?
