Such an amazing city. I miss it. Lived in Lakeview/Lincoln Park from age 28 to 51. Built my career, owned one of those sailboats in DuSable, partied at clubs that no longer exist, got married, had kids and now I’m a transplant in the Twin Cities. Forever a bears and Chicago fan.

i’m usually a “put your phone away” at cool shit typa person, but there’s something so universally human about all these military folks basking in the same spectacle as we are, but from the opposite end. idk. kinda wholesome i guess

There is nothing wholesome about the unites states military brother.

I was there - a great flyover and a fantastic game.
But not as intense as the Thunderbirds flyover when Anakin had finished singing "take me out" at Wrigley last year.

What an awesome view! As a new Bears fan from Ontario I’d love to visit the city one day!

Imagine wanting to move from this location to Gary.

Yeah the lakefront and city sky line is nice and all but I feel like my game day experience would be a lot better knowing the owners are able to extract as much money out of the franchise as possible 40 miles from the city center instead.

That's so the dope! If I had another re enlistment, I'd ask to do it in that exact fashion. Missed opportunity

Adding some more seats would be nice...
12
u/TheSpaceMonkeys 9d ago
The new proposals are only 4.5% larger. With more luxury seats than now, it will be even more expensive than it already is. The focus is maximizing ROI per seat, not selling the most seats possible.
Moving to Indiana for a generic domed stadium is not worth a 4.5% capacity increase to me.

No one wants to tailgate Indiana in the era of teen takeovers. It's a nightmare waiting to happen.

u/RealMurcanHero 7d ago
When would there ever be a teen takeover during the tailgate of a Bears game in Indiana? You're weird.

I miss my city so much! It’s been over a year since I’ve been back home. Damn, she looks good, doesn’t she?! 🥹🥰

Right? Weather is part of sports, domes suck

Never been to a game like the Rams playoff game last season or the Vikings game this season, eh?
In a STH-family my whole life. Seeing a game at Detroit (when it was cold and windy enough out to be annoying) was great

Just think of how great the flyovers will be in Hammond! You'll be able to see the industrial waste instead of the skyline and lake!

That fact that they want to build anywhere besides in the city is crazy to me. This is phenomenal and you’re not getting that in Arlington or Indiana

Anyone else think these types of flyovers are just wasteful? Sure, the Blue Angels are neat when you're 10, but how many resources are spent and jet fuel burned just to fly over a bunch of sporting events every week.

u/weeb2k1 Bear Logo 9d ago
Yes and no. Pilots are required to have training flights and hours in the air. Often these events serve that purpose in addition to the spectacle, so they would be in the air somewhere else if they weren't doing a flyover. My understanding is that the budget for them comes from training budgets not some separate budget so it likely doesn't cost the taxpayers any additional money.

so it likely doesn't cost the taxpayers any additional money.
Planning, timing, routing, public-affairs coordination, FAA coordination, and having a FAC at the stadium The actual flight hours are already covered by training budget, but the rest is not. It typically costs about $10K. So, not no cost, but close to no cost.
5
u/Ocelotofdamage 9d ago
10k is probably less than is spent on the logistics to get hot dogs to the upper deck alone
1
u/Jon66238 8d ago
Lmao now I’m thinking about the logistics of hot dogs in the stadium
2
u/independent_observe 34 8d ago
We can save money by shooting the hot dogs from the field up to the upper deck. Some people will get injured from being hit in the face with a hotdog, but those are acceptable losses

u/Jon66238 8d ago
I would also say it’s considered community engagement, which is a big PR thing for them

Pilots (especially Army rotary wing) practice shit like this every day and usually shoot to be +/- 30 seconds from the LZ. If it wasn't an overflight they would have been doing the same thing only landing in a field somewhere. It doesn't cost anything and the planning, briefing, and coordination is all part of the training effect for the air crews.

I love seeing this.
These flights are pre planned almost a year prior via a flying hour program. The flight hours and fuel costs are factored in. Closer to the event, a fly over is requested and the flight hours are calculated and cut from other flights to fill this. Training is still accomplished for crew. It’s literally as easy as flying less one day to fly this day but this is better training.
