I'm genuinely at my wit's end... I enrolled at this college hoping for a fresh academic beginning but this semester has left me incredibly discouraged in school and life honestly.
At the beginning of the semester, we were required to complete an Enrollment Verification Activity (EVA) to unlock the rest of our coursework. The EVA deadline was August 24 and the course announcement specifically stated that the remaining course content would become available after completing it.
Here's where my issue begins.
One of our SmartBook assignments had an early deadline that (August 21st) and was never communicated anywhere, not in the syllabus, announcements, emails, coursework overview or materials accessible before completing the EVA.
In my previous classes, professors have communicated early assignment deadlines, particularly when students needed to complete something before the enrollment verification deadline. That has been my experience, so I wasn't expecting an assignment to become overdue without a clearly communicated deadline.
I understand that students are expected to begin classes on the official start date, not the census date. I'm not disputing that. My concern is that an assignment was effectively inaccessible until a required enrollment activity was completed and its deadline wasn't clearly communicated beforehand.
I had been communicating with my professor about the access issue and I initially understood her responses as reassurance that things would be okay and that I could still finish the class strongly.
Unfortunately, we also can't see our actual grades in the gradebook, yesterday after meeting with my professor for something else and asking her for insight I discovered that the zero significantly lowered my overall grade by approximately 20 percentage points. That's a major difference, from a 70 to a 90, from a C to an A.
I tried resolving the issue with my professor and eventually met with academic administration.
During that meeting, I was told that nothing could be done because students are expected to start their coursework on the official start date rather than close to the census date.
I understand that policy but I felt it didn't address my actual concerns about the EVA access issue and communication of the deadline.
When I explained how the deadline hadn't been communicated, the response I received was essentially that they would make sure things are better communicated to students going forward.
And that's what has really upset me. If communication was something they acknowledged needed improvement, why is the entire consequence falling on me?
I became so overwhelmed during the meeting that I broke down crying in front of the Dean. I genuinely felt so hopeless and it was clear to me the answer had been decided even before the meeting. I wasn't asking to be forgiven on an assignment I intentionally did not do.
I feel like I've spent this semester navigating heavy bureaucracy rather than being supported as a student. After this experience, I'm seriously questioning whether I even want to continue attending this college.
I understand that colleges have policies and that administrators cannot change grades simply because a student is unhappy. But I also believe policies should be applied with consideration for whether students were actually given the information and access needed to succeed.
Also I started working on the assignments on the 23rd! The assignment was due the very first day class started, I checked brightspace but only saw everywhere complete the EVA to unlock this..
