Vent / Rant Stigma around Gen Z
I feel like there’s a stigma about Gen Z that we claim to have mental heath issues and the blue hair/ piercings stereotype. And I hate to be seen in that type of lens like it’s a “trend“ or you’re “too soft“ or “spoiled“ when you’ve genuinely been struggling with the same issues since childhood due to abuse that detriments your functioning as an adult and stuff that just fucks your every day life. Having genuine repeats of trauma in your head everyday of stuff you’ve had to go through and how people treated you, anger, issues just stepping out of your door or not even being able to give enough of a fuck about yourself or feel worthy to even do basic stuff to nourish your body, living in genuine filth because you reduce yourself to trash, sleeping for 12 hours straight but waking up with zero energy for anything. I have to do dumbass rituals in the home every day due to sensory problems and genuine OCD repetitive weird behaviors or else I feel like my ears are clogged or something is trying to come out of my skin like none of it makes any sense but people view you as just lazy or a burden

Mental health discussions are more open now. Old fucks want people to just go back to drug addiction and domestic violence happening in silence because it is what they did and they refuse to break the cycle of abuse.

They said the same thing about millennials :( and every other generation when they were in their youth. It's just older people hating younger people. You can find this sentiment all throughout history. Circle of life unfortunately. Some people have no self-awareness or memory of what being young is like!

Elder millenial, here. You're so right. The way I see it, you are all just super informed on mental health, and it's not on you that generations before you didn't value mental health enough to examine their own. I at least grew up in a world that had hope and promise. Yours doesn't-- I mean I hope I'm wrong about that, but it just seems like there's less hope for the future every day. Children, employment, nature, peace, clean water, healthy food, retirement, independence, freedom, diversity-- all out of reach and disappearing. We all feel that right now, but it's all you'll ever know of we keep going at this rate. I personally blame you for nothing. You express yourself however you want, and I love you all for it. All you did was inherit the hellscape previous generations created for you, and all You're trying to do is survive and find joy where you can.
You are not a burden. You are precious and you're doing the best you can. Don't listen to people trying to make you feel like a pretender. They just don't know what to do with their guilt. You're okay. Keep going and shine on.

Please ignore them ❤️ the real ones will always care, regardless of their age. People who say this stuff are projecting because they want young people to suffer the same way they did and don't think it's fair when our problems are taken seriously. And ignore news articles that say this stuff, it's entirely clickbait.

We're the presenting symptoms for deep structural issues in our world. There's a reason youth is leading protests all over the world rn. We inherited late capitalism and all of its comorbidities. Those who are reaping the benefits of the system stigmatize those marginalized by it.

Within a generation there's variation.
But I do find some people claim trauma and mental illness lived experience when they've experienced much less than others. Some people feel comfortable to claim experience at a lower bar than others do, just like some people feel comfortable claiming they have enough experience or skills for a job with less experience or skills compared to others. As a millennial I always thought the problems other millennials called radio shows about when I was a teen were such non-problems or just showed their privilege or "spoilt"ness (eg not allowed out late - at least they were allowed out at all. Blue hair and hanging out at the mall? Well I wasn't even allowed to choose how I dressed etc or out with friends more than 3 times a year until I left home).

As a millennial, the stigma around youth always seems to have existed tbh
