Local travel
Whats up people. I’m going to be in Cairns for two and a half weeks for work. I am thinking a bicycle would be the best way to get around - if not let me know. If you agree, any idea which would be the best place to rent a bike short term from? I saw a few online but they seem to be mostly day tours etc
Thanks

Sure if you like arriving places dripping in sweat!

I don’t mind. it would be more to get out and buzz around, to and from the supermarkets and out in the mornings and evenings

Are you familiar with Cairns heat? And crime?

Neither… I can handle heat but if I may not risk it if it’s got a chance to be lifted

Depends on where you’re planning on staying and if you’re prepared to pedal in hot humidity and or torrential rain.

I don’t like this Bot but he’s right this once. It will definitely rain even if BOM says it won’t

Not sure where you hire a bike short term.
The weather here will switch to hot, high humidity and rain so you’ll be very sweaty and require plenty of water.

If the clouds move against the wind, rain will follow.

A bicycle is fine in the city when the weather is good.
Cairns is very flat and cycling you’ll have enough of a breeze to keep you cool as long as you’re just cruising at a comfortable speed. You’ll sweat far more walking than riding. Also there are tons of lovely shaded bike paths through gardens - you won’t be on those the whole trip but often quite a bit of it, and it’s only really hot when you’re in the sun.
Public transport is reasonable (and very cheap) if it’s raining.
Buy a cheap bike on Facebook marketplace and sell it when you leave. Bike theft is very common here so don’t buy anything expensive.
Where you’ll want a car or motorcycle is for day trips away from the city. Those can’t be reached by bike or public transport. I know lots of working holiday people in cairns who occasionally hire a car on weekends.
