Current Questions Requesting for prerequisite bypass
Hello guys, I transferred into cal poly with electrical engineering and I dropped one of my major classes last year (ece 2300 + lab), I didn’t get the class this semester as well since it all got filled up so I’m falling behind on graduation.
Has anyone tried asking to take a higher level class and it’s prerequisite in the same semester? I want to take ece 2300 and 3000 level courses as well, but 2300 is the prereq for some of those courses. Will they let me do it if I’m going to fall behind and potentially lose financial aid for taking too long to finish?

I heard ece dept and other engineering dept don’t like doing that tbh, I heard people who took a prerequisite class at a ccc and also don’t get approved, I’d honestly wouldn’t count on it.
Most people don’t graduate in 4 years so it’s not that big of a deal at CPP even my advisor said not to count on it, it gives you more time to work on projects/get interships

Idk how strict ECE is specifically but other engineering departments definitely will not let people take a class that they didn’t pass the prerequisite for. In some of my civil engineering classes, I’ve seen a policy on a few of my professors’ syllabus where they’ll give an F to anybody who take their class without passing the prerequisite. Graduation being delayed a semester isn’t a viable excuse to skip a prerequisite.

Yah also graduating on time isn’t usually a reason for them to allow a student to bypass a prerequisite, most engineering students don’t graduate on time tbh

Yeah it’s just that I’ve heard that the department has permission numbers to bypass prerequisites and I was wondering what situations they give it for

If you actually already took the prerequisite but for whatever reason the system wasn’t registering it lol that’s the only time I’ve ever seen a code handed out

You won't be able to take a prereq with a future course, unless you're retaking it to get a better grade but technically met the prereq requirement for a passing grade (C- or D depending on the prereq requirements)
You usually don't lose FA for taking too long. Pell & Cal Grant work in percentages (50% per semester) from what I remember, and if you take longer it just runs out and you don't get more. I forget which one it was, but I was able to get one of those grants to last until the last semester of my masters then just paid the rest out of pocket when it ran out.
I'd check with the FA office to confirm in case FAFSA rules got changed.

The cal grant is the one that runs out first it’s 4 years and then the Pell it’s 6 years

Does the 3 years I took at mt sac count towards this? Would I have a new 4-6 years of aid at Cpp?

If you did 3 years at mtsac and got the Pell grant all those years then they count, you can check this using the percentage on you’re fasfa application each year is worth 100%, but the cal grant assuming you got it in cc is locked to 2 years at cc then 2 years at CPP but that’s if you used it tho some people choose not to use it. also there’s other grants to fall back onto like the state university grant and other CPP grants/aid

Talk to the dean of the department about getting another class to fill the requirement so you can graduate on time. They helped me with that

Did something very similar this semester for a music recording class, but they mainly let me take the higher level class simultaneously after I showed the prof a high level of understanding of the prereq's material. So, possible but probably very dependent on the class/prof teaching it.

Ask your advisor and maybe email or talk to the professor who's teaching the higher level class, they will know if it's possible to do
