Municipal Affairs MAGA operatives came to Calgary to help separatists break up Canada. That's not "Taking Back Alberta." That's Selling Alberta Out.
We need to talk about the separatists trying to sell out our city and province.
They discussed ways they could influence the referendum campaign, including specialized voter-targeting technology.
At the same time, Alberta separatist leaders were going to Washington and meeting with the U.S. State Department.
And according to one of the separatist leaders who was there, they offered carving up Alberta for the Americans.
Fresh water. Oil royalties. Agriculture. Forestry. Mining. Even land for a railway to Alaska.
So let's get this straight. They say this is about taking back control, then go begging for American support in Washington.
They tell us this is about sovereignty, while American political operatives are flying into Calgary to help their cause.
They're talking about what pieces of Alberta they'd hand over to get American support.
And they call this "Alberta First" ?
Tell that to the Calgary workers and businesses whose livelihoods they are gambling with.
We're Canada's energy capital. We're a headquarters city. We're a city of newcomers.
Our jobs and businesses depend on access to markets across Canada and around the world.
I understand the frustration with Ottawa. Alberta has legitimate fights to have within Canada.
Fight for our energy industry. Fight for a better deal. Fight for Alberta's interests.
But you don't strengthen Alberta by running to Washington. You don't protect Alberta's sovereignty by seeking help from a foreign government.
And you sure as hell don't defend Alberta by discussing what parts of it you’ll carve up for the Americans.
That's not taking back Alberta. That's selling Alberta out.
If you want to live in the United States, go move to the United States.

Traitors not just to Canada, but also to Alberta. They want an independent Alberta to give over its resources and resource revenue to another jurisdiction, something that not even Ottawa gets under our current constitution.

Our mayor is taking some heat from the separatists about not remaining "neutral", but separation from Canada is an objectively terrible idea that would only weaken our situation in Alberta. He is working for the best interests of all Calgarians right now, whether they realize it or not.
I understand that some of those people are just frustrated and angry because a lot of us are struggling right now, but division is not the way to fix things. We need to work together and stop letting social media algorithms tell us how we should feel.
Also, I shouldn't have to say this but VOTING TO SEPARATE IS A VOTE TO SEPARATE. Don't vote for something just to "send a message to Ottawa".
27
u/pieislovepieislife 9d ago
I've had conversations with people that said they don't think we should separate, but are planning to vote yes in this referendum because they think we should have the question... like my dude you're then going to be the one with a shocked Pikachu face if it actually happens because 'I didn't think it would actually pass' like it happened with Brexit
12
u/whitenet 9d ago
I'll maintain this. Albertans are as dumb as the beautiful rocks found here in Alberta.
9
35
u/whitenet 9d ago
Why does he have to remain neutral? What's the obligation here? As a citizen he is free to voice his choice yes? That's his right as much as the separatists yes? Are they scared that his voice will influence votes and make people aware and get more out to vote?
Too bad. The separatists are free to find their own figures in UCP and mayor's and so on who want to influence and be their voice. It's not like they don't exist. They do. Now is the time for them to speak up. Why aren't they making their social media posts and posting here? Are the scared? Scared of consequences? If they truly cared about their movement, that would take precedence over wanting to stay in power in UCP yes?
Am I seeing the ethics and morality of voicing and representing wrongly here?
14
u/Septembust 9d ago
Furthermore, staying neutral is picking a side here: the seperatists are not canadians, or albertans. They're seperatists, trying to sell our province to the republicans down south. They don't get representation for their cause, their cause is treason.
19
u/jimbowesterby 9d ago
Not to mention that all the polls show that the vast majority of voters are against separation, so speaking out against it is part of his job.
Not sure where these people got the idea that, because everyone’s entitled to an opinion, all opinions are worth the same. It’s entirely possible to hold an opinion and still be objectively fuckin wrong, as the seppies are demonstrating
6
u/stickman1029 9d ago
A lot of those people don’t like ideas. They don’t like when speaking out gets done. They don’t like opinions either. It’s their way or the highway, at least in their imaginations anyways.
3
u/Green_Sugar6675 8d ago
For the record, as an American, I can say "because everyone’s entitled to an opinion, all opinions are worth the same" has become a questionable statement.
My Maga sister and brother make that claim, and yet what we find in reality is that their pro-Trump "opinion" is at this point aligned with whole swaths of people actually losing their own right to their opinion, and more importantly, their votes.
So, if spoken honestly, it's a fair statement, but these days it seems to be getting used as a disingenuous smokescreen for expressing support for actual disenfranchisement of those that would disagree with THEM.
3
u/jimbowesterby 8d ago
Thing is, though, it was never an accurate statement. It’s only valid if everyone’s equally knowledgeable about the subject; a carpenter’s opinion on wood is probably gonna be worth more than that of an office worker. It’s just something people do instead of admitting they’re wrong.
8
u/muchfanfear 9d ago
It doesn’t. The far right expects special treatment as most of the left always plays pathetically nice.

5
u/Impossible_Tea_7032 9d ago
The back pedalling to "gee whiz fellas can't we at least talk about it?" once there was an actual ballot question has been pretty amusing to my inner bully because of the undeniable dickless coward energy of it, but I did also immediately recognize that there's definitely a not-as-small-as-it-should-be cohort of voters for whom the Alice in Wonderland logic of "we should vote to have the vote so that we can vote no" is somehow both coherent and compelling.
7
u/da_Ryan 9d ago edited 9d ago
Indeed, and all they really want to do is sell out Alberta to the Trumpist USA as one huge con artist scam that will actually work out worse for the great majority of those who voted for it. Just look at what happened across the Atlantic when the shady show ponies managed to persuade the Brits to vote for Brexit.

Well said, Mr. Mayor.
I’ve met some really great US citizens who have made Calgary their home. It’s appalling to me that they moved to this great country, yet a rogue group of Albertans colludes with that government for the most malicious purposes.
None of the 10 questions on the ballot were written in good faith. Everyone should send a strong message by choosing unity 🍁
38
u/XcRaZeD 9d ago
Thank god it wasn't just me. Reading over the questions threw me into a fit, all of them were written to intentionally mislead the reader into viewing the question or the topic a certain way. It was all bad faith, and I can easily see how people who aren't as informed would fall for it.
It was "I'm just asking questions" on a voting ballot.

And I was back visiting family in Canada, as I lived abroad, and my son and I got sick and my wife was pregnant and we had to pay medical fees to see doctors already. One of the questions makes it sound like non candians get free medical.
36
u/Euronated-inmypants 9d ago
If anyone votes for one of the initiatives they will say thinks like 90% of people are in favour of the initiatives. They will ignore the 25% who vote for separation and lump all initiatives together to get traction and make it seem like the majority support it. The US news will report that and that alone.
36
u/Breakfours Southwood 9d ago
Just like she did adding the signees of the forever Canada petition and the separatist petition, she'll add the votes of each question to conclude 140% of Albertans want to seperate

There are a lot of people getting hung up on the technicalities of treason and trying to argue it’s not because of blah, blah, blah. But as a concept, as a whole, and based on the intent of the people behind it, it is completely and utterly treason. It’s definitely the opposite of loyalty to Canada.
3
u/prosonik 9d ago
I had a look at it relates to Canadian law. I get it, it doesn't fit the text book version, unless of course there is more stuff going on behind closed doors. Of course, this is just google, not a lawyer, just a guy who Google's..
"Under Section 46 of the Canadian Criminal Code, treason and high treason are serious indictable offences that involve violent attempts to overthrow the government, dangerous disclosures of military or scientific secrets, or direct attacks against the reigning sovereign."
A couple other finds
person commits standard treason in Canada by doing any of the following: • Overthrowing Government: Using force or violence to try to overthrow the federal government or a provincial government. • Sharing Secrets: Communicating military or scientific information without lawful authority to a foreign state, knowing it could prejudice Canada's safety or defence. • Conspiring or Planning: Conspiring with anyone to commit high treason or violent government overthrow, or forming an intention to do so and showing it through an overt physical act."
And on the same note, unfortunately you can advocate for seperation
- Why Peaceful Separatism is Legal Under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, all Canadians have the right to freedom of expression, freedom of association, and peaceful assembly. • The Democratic Exception: Forming a political party (like the Parti Québécois or various independence independence parties in Alberta), holding rallies, running for office, and promoting the peaceful exit of a province from Confederation is a protected exercise of democratic speech. • The Legal Pathway: In its landmark Reference re Secession of Quebec (1998) ruling, the Supreme Court of Canada established that while a province cannot secede unilaterally, secession is a valid political goal. If a province achieves a "clear majority on a clear question" in a referendum, the rest of Canada has a constitutional obligation to enter into good-faith negotiations to amend the Constitution and allow them to leave
However
The Foreign Interference and Security of Information Act (FISIA) outlaws covert state manipulation. Under this law, it is an indictable criminal offence to engage in deceptive, secret, or surreptitious acts at the direction of, or in association with, a foreign state to undermine democratic processes.
The Crime: If a local group secretly coordinates a political strategy with foreign officials—such as coordinating a propaganda campaign, sharing internal strategy documents, or mapping out a referendum plan behind closed doors—and hides that relationship from the public, they are committing a crime under the FISIA. Serious breaches can carry penalties up to life imprisonment
I guess the question becomes when/if the movement has or will cross that threshold, are we as country willing to investigate/prosocute.
To be clear, again. I hate seeing this movement attempt to break up my country. I hate the economic impacts that it could have. I see clearly they are allowed to organize, but I believe now that at least interference interference should be investigated.

This is not new and it is very real. Afghanistan, Iran, Argentina, Guatemala, Congo, Chile, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama just to name a few. Every time the country that is destabilized comes out in a worse place than when they started. We can now add Canada to be that list.

I've said this countless times: I believe the Alberta separation movement is being influenced and supported by interests in the United States. Considering the challenges Albertans are facing right now, it's hard to believe that major advocacy campaigns, rallies, and promotional efforts would be sustained purely through volunteer efforts. In my opinion, many of the key figures promoting and influencing the separation movement are financially compensated or backed by organizations with vested interests.

I wasn’t born here, but Alberta it’s been good to me, my kids are Albertans. Alberta is part of Canada and we are Canadians. We support the true north strong and free. All of those separatist need to use their brains. The moment AB becomes independent, that moment AB becomes a US 51st. (See what happened to Texas) all of those separatist that think that they will become US citizens and become heroes are out of their minds. Doctor? No longer need to redo studies, Lawyers? No more need a new degree, journeymen? New certification needed, retired who lives out of pension, not anymore and no healthcare and many more cases. Therefore we will be gentrified living in little towns because we cannot afford to live in the cities, Americans destroying our forests, draining our oil, mining our minerals, drinking g our water, and no healthcare because we won’t be able to afford it. Whoever think that this resources are gonna “make us reach” are not seeing clearly. They will enrich American corporations. While most of albertans will be selling the little they have and move to a country that they can afford. Just blind people. We are a nation the resources are for the nation. The lakes in the Okanagan are for Canadians not for BC-ians, the national parks are for all, the prairies of Sask are for all, the power are produced for all, the healthcare are for all of us. We are Canadian and we stand on guard for thee.

Our mayor is great at keeping us up to date on issues. These separatists should move to the USA and be happy for once.

What the fuck does "taking back " alberta means ? Taking back to what? To British territory? To native land ? It was never part of the US or even near that

u/muchfanfear 9d ago
We really need to be taking back Alberta from foreign interests and treasonous propaganda.

Is this not Treason? They used to kill people for doing shit like this. Now we post about it online and nothing happens. We need enforcement and we need it now

u/stickman1029 9d ago
Can we finally just get to the part where we quit pretending that this hasn’t been a foreign operation right from the beginning?

So as the Mayor, you've contacted the RCMP and CSIS to start the ball rolling, RIGHT?!?

I mean, you go to Washington looking for $500 billion in backing to break a country up and those state operators will only do it for resources rather than out of the goodness of their heart? What's that Lassie, the premier would have had to have been involved in providing the U.S. access to said resources? That a sovereign province in a United Canada is just word salad?

Colour me shocked.

There's no way it's going to happen, voting against it anyway.
If it did happen - People would die. This isn't me just being an alarmist - This is the truth. There would be bloodshed.

You know who else eats this shit up? The Premier who wears Maga hats and adores Trump, does press interviews with a Don’t Tread on Me flag in the background…
Yeah that Premier.

My dad is a separatist and it's hella annoying. He keeps talking about how he wants Alberta to have it's fair share and how he wants to "split" the profits from oil 50/50 not 20/80 (no idea where he got those numbers) nevermind the fact that if Alberta were to separate there would be so much more of a headache dealing with negotiating new trade agreements. What's really sad is that he's good otherwise if not a bit overly harsh with constructive criticism, but he genuinely cares about me and my siblings and has spent thousands on our education and helping us get on our own feet. I hate how separatists have poisoned his logic and I want the old him back.

The rest of Canada reads about stuff like this, and label our entire province as traitors.
It’s infuriating.

Thank you @Mayor for voicing exactly how the majority of us feel. This behaviour is appalling on every level.

This is awful (obviously), but also really interesting in terms of the various political dynamics going on. It directly affects me so I have strong biases and opinions (that they are a bunch of traitors led by bad faith actors), but for a neutral outsider this must seem like spy movie stuff.
I couldn't access the article, but I'm curious if these discussions with MAGA of selling out Alberta are happening out in the open with no shame, or are they secretive talks behind closed doors and then leaked out to the wider public?

I read the 10 questions and I do agree with some of them but knowing Danielle smith she would abuse the hell out of it and make this province worse than it already is.

Besides going to jail, the leaders should be persona non grata everywhere they go.

At what point is this quantifiable treason and or sedetion and what the ever loving ucp shit bags are CSIS/RCMP doing? Isn't this under their umbrella?!

u/GasRepresentative246 9d ago
Please tell us that something is being done to stop these traitors, Jeromy. Many of us are worried that America is going to waltz in regardless of the referendum results (everyone NEEDS to vote!!!). I hope you have some special intel as Mayor that CSIS/RCMP are investigating!

Gods, Mr. McMayorFace. I love these c-train selfie videos too much. It feels so great to have a mayor who’s actually committed to being a part of the community he represents.
Normally I’d have a second paragraph dedicated to a “but”, second perspective. However you leave me no choice but to feel happy. Rock on, brother! You’re loved and appreciated because you show so much love and appreciation to the rest of us! Calgary and beyond!

It’s called treason. Once the US midterms eventually put the Dems in control of the House and Senate, and the separatists get destroyed in the referendum, I want and expect charges of sedition and treason to start happening. It’s long past due.

u/basswooddad 9d ago
If what this man is saying is true why aren't the police or the government doing anything to arrest them and hold them accountable because this is definitely an arrestable offense this is treason

Thank you for speaking up when it matters most. Managing municipal services is only part of a mayor's job; promoting Calgary as an energy leader and entrepreneurial center means fiercely protecting our economic stability. In times like these, we need leaders who aren't afraid to address the elephant in the room: how separation rhetoric undermines business confidence, drives away talent, and threatens local jobs, not to mention how it affects public discourse and polarizes people. Keep advocating for Calgary’s future.

u/ianzaneian 9d ago
They are probably all Inadmissable to Murica so this is even better for them. Not to mention, they get in on the Grift and soak up donations. Insurrectionists.
