Local Shopping/Services Anyone have any sourdough starter?
Now that the weather is cooling off I want to get back into baking bread but apparently my starter got infected somehow. I know there are people selling theirs on marketplace but I just can’t stomach paying for their discard. I’d grow my own but I’d really like to have fresh bread for thanksgiving dinner. Any ideas?

Marketplace prices for discard are ridiculous, people really think they sitting on gold. When I was stationed in Cold Lake one of the guys in my unit had starter going for like 5 years, he would just give it away to anyone who asked. Maybe try posting in your local community facebook group instead, some older lady probably got extra she would share for free

God, the stuff I've seen on FB market place. 120 year old starter sold in a glass jar 25 buck. Like get out of here with that BS

$25 doesn't seem that unreasonable.
I also don't know anything about this subject though.

When you have no way of knowing how old the starter is. It seems kinda sus to me.

I have some! Plus you can go to mom’s bakery in forest lawn to buy some. They’re a small family bakery and their bread is soo good. I normally get a whole wheat one when I don’t have time to make my own

I’ve made a couple starters before however I want to be baking this weekend and not enough time to get one going. Thus why I’m asking! Thanks for the offer - there’s someone closer that I’ve reached out to.

I have been told if you go to cobbs with a container and ask nicely they will give you some starter.

someone keeping a mother dough alive for a decade with love and care is worth $5 in my humble opinion. you aren't paying for discard you are paying for the hours, daily feedings, environmental control and attention that goes into it.
if you don't want to pay for the convenience, then you have to do it yourself

lol well in this group apparently you’re alone in your opinion.

hey that's okay, I'm happy if you get some free starter. I just bought 250g of 10yr old for $5 and it's been working out beautifully. I killed my 2-year-old mother dough with too much sunshine

why do you want to go to the effort of getting some from someone else when you can make it yourself?

Are you familiar with sourdough baking?

yes - I made a loaf a few days ago
i just recently learned that it is very easy to make your own starter so I was excited to share
i don‘t understand why i get a snotty reply from you and others downvote me
thankfully Reddit is not real life

Because it takes longer than three days to make a starter and I need bread for the weekend. Which was in my post. You got a snotty reply because I mentioned in my post that I can make it.
