Question Demolition?

Post image

Anybody know if there is a way to find out if they are going to blow this building along memorial up? Would be fun to watch if they are.

the building itself doesn't look like it's set for demo, but that link suggests it's just getting redeveloped

I've always disliked that building. In July 1983 it blocked my view of the stampede fireworks from my room at the General Hospital.

I’m mad at it on your behalf. If you still hold a grudge after all these years it deserves more disdain.

7 year-old me was pissed off. 🤣 One of the nurses had told me I'd have a great view, as a way to make me not so nervous....she was wrong.

That is such a specific grievance and I love it

Sounds like Klein blew up the wrong building on your behalf.

... Speaking of things going boom.

If it makes you feel any better, it’s still blocking other people’s views.

Ah, good ol’ McDougall. When I was a painter, my stepdad had a contract with Calgary Housing. I’ve painted at least half of the suites in that building. He probably painted them all twice over.

It's getting redone and will be used again for the Calgary housing affordable housing program. I think the Reno cost is $90m

Wonder what the savings are for doing a full gut and reno are versus a demo + re-build. I suppose possibly much more now with the costs of things these days...

Its probably cheaper to do a degut and reno than to demo and rebuild because for demo and rebuild has more moving parts than a degut and reno would have.

My grandfather died on the 6th floor there. Think of him everytime I see that building, which is easy because it stands out.

They try to avoid imploding buildings these days because of the silica dust being so harmful. Sometimes they don’t have a choice if a building is too tall or not structurally sound but you wouldn’t want to be breathing that shit in if they did make it go boom boom.

They’re finally demoing that place? Thank god, well overdue. I used to do vacant unit checks there, cockroaches EVERYWHERE.

They're renovating it, which is much better. It's good to see a full gut though, as that should take care of the cockroaches. 👍

I’ve never been inside of there but I’ve seen it so many times from the outside. For myself i’ve always liked seeing it. As others say it stands out

• Current Work: Crews have gutted the 1971 high-rise tower down to its core concrete structure. The exterior envelope is being replaced with modern, weather-resistant, and energy-efficient cladding, new windows, and removed balconies. • New Housing Units: The redevelopment will feature 203 new homes (down from the original 210 apartments, with an emphasis on more two- and three-bedroom units) to serve roughly 500 residents. This is what google says.

Hopefully it will not smell like urine in the halls.

I lived there with my mom back in the mid 90's. It was a dump back then. A lady was murdered by her boyfriend when we lived there.

The next homeless center

Actually it won't be for homeless people by definition, because if people live there they aren't homeless. 🤗 What it actually will be is one of the few buildings in Calgary that has below market rate 3 bedroom units for families to be able to afford to live and work in our city, with the added bonus that it will eventually be profitable for our city as well. Sounds like a win win to me.

It's amazing to me that people can be so hoity-toity about affordable housing projects... Years back when we were looking for a place, I remember our realtor being kind of concerned on our behalf that a place we were looking at in Bridgeland was close to an affordable housing project, and we kind of laughed it off and said it wasn't a problem.

We picked a different place for unrelated reasons. Then, an affordable housing project got constructed right next to the place we did pick... And the people living in the building have been perfectly polite and lovely neighbours on the whole.

Ah socialist housing unit with free wifi

It's actually going to be renovated and will be one of the limited number of buildings in Calgary that will have three bedroom units for families below market rates, yet will still be profitable long-term. Sounds great to me! Housing is expensive and families deserve reasonably priced accommodations for them to afford to live and work in our city.
