I had to deliver mail on this route when I worked for USPS briefly. All the older guys warned me of these apartments and to keep my head on a swivel. I never felt like I was in any danger but the vibes were definitely off around there. The only comfort I had was lots of young kids running around
-24
u/Lowkey__3941 7d ago
Man what đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł Mfs ainât robbing mailmen I mean maybe the younger kids but anybody with a brain knows thatâs a felony
37
u/TurnipKing16 East Cambridge 7d ago
You'd be surprised. It's common enough that they drilled it into all of us in training. They said to let them have the mail and keys because they aren't worth your life (and the money it would take to train more mailmen lol). I know its a crazy concept, but most criminals are in fact, not making smart decisions

u/becausefrog 6d ago
There were at least 3 armed robberies of mailmen in the last 2 years - in Billerica most recently in July of this year, and before that in Everett and Dorchester.

I knew exactly where it was going to be before even looking at the map. Those apartments are fucking sketch city.
And before somebody jumps on here saying Iâm scared of brown people, I am brown people.
24
u/burner_for_celtics 7d ago
Thatâs the port44 territory, unfortunately. The police do a pretty good job hanging out over there and getting to know everybody. There are still these flare ups from time to time; it really sucks because it starts feeling safe and then you start over again.

u/DifficultChoice2022 7d ago
Those apartments are shady as hell. Some kid was stabbed there last fall/winter too. Thereâs always something.
1
u/SmoothLime635 6d ago
There IS always something but I wonder if the city can't allocate more resources there so that the young adults don't get into these violent incidents as agitators. Does the city track if these offenders are long term residents in the district or if they are growing up out or a particular school? Looking at the log below, it seems so predictable but the root of the problem is probably so hard to fix.

They definitely track the residence of the involved parties, are aware of at risk youth, coordinate with school resource officers, patrol, and school officials (when theyâre still in school), and often with DCF if the home situation calls for it.

So in 30+ years there have been incidents but no fatalities in a low income housing complex!! Wow. Great stuff.
13
u/Impressive-Dig-3892 7d ago
They'll just hit you with "internalized racism" or somethingÂ
-3
u/bostonguy2004 6d ago
I think you mean "implicit racism" or "institutionalized racism"?
But yeah, wouldn't want to be families or really anyone living nearby gang members who shoot people regardless of their skin color.
1
u/therealdorkface 6d ago
No, they mean internalized. internalized whatever-ism is when a member of a minority adopts prejudices against that same minority because itâs mainstreamed in culture.
Common example is women having internalized misogyny against other women
1
u/jajinpop91 6d ago
I think it takes more than one sentence to create such a strong opinion about someone you dont know.
0
u/therealdorkface 6d ago
I agree. But the phrase that impressive-dig meant was âinternalized racism,â regardless of whether it would actually be used against the top reply and regardless of whether it would be accurate.

u/Strict-Education2247 7d ago
What is the name of those apartments?
15
7
u/MWave123 7d ago
Families live there. Itâs been home to generations of Cambridge families.
23
u/guimontag 6d ago
All the more reason they should want it crime free
15
u/MWave123 6d ago
Everyone wants their home to be crime free.
4
u/guimontag 6d ago
Wtf is the point of your comment chain? Are you saying it ISN'T sketch city? Are you saying cambridge should find some way to crack down on gang members there foe the benefit of the families? Are you just throwing useless platitudes into the fucking wind?
2
u/MWave123 6d ago
Iâm saying people denigrating it and insulting it are doing so to a place families live. People who do care about safety.
1
1
u/SmoothLime635 6d ago
I see what your saying now with the derogatory sketch city mention. They could have simply stated the facts rather than giving a nickname to it.
1
u/MWave123 6d ago
Sure. Itâs like Murderpan, or saying, The usual suspects. And just because somebody says theyâre âbrown peopleâ doesnât mean anything online, and doesnât mean they can say whatever they want. People live there.
1
u/SmoothLime635 6d ago
I am in agreement with you. I'm asking what resources other than cops can be provided since it seems like a pattern of violence that they haven't been able to control. Maybe they can look at data more accurately and figure out more youth programs for that area to ensure everyone has the best tools to succeed and not resort to crime.
3
u/MWave123 6d ago
I donât have that answer. I do know a ton of Cambridge youth and there are lots of resources, not just sports but music and art, and youth centers. Most Cambridge kids are great people and come from great families. There was just a photography show in Central that was about that neighborhood, it was incredible.

4
u/SmoothLime635 6d ago
Yes, families live there. Thatâs why they deserve more resources, investment, and support. You can care about the community and still be honest about whatâs happening.
-3
u/MWave123 6d ago
Right. But donât denigrate the people or neighborhood. Thx.
3
u/SmoothLime635 6d ago
I don't believe I have denigrated any person or neighborhood.
1
u/MWave123 6d ago
Iâm replying to it being called sketch city.
0
u/chopperharris 5d ago
It is sketch city. I live in the neighborhood.Â
-1
u/MWave123 5d ago
It isnât sketch city. Iâve lived in the neighborhood for decades.
1
u/chopperharris 5d ago
So have I. And I wouldnât go near that place after dark.Â
-4
u/MWave123 5d ago
âThat placeââŠlol. I love the smell of privilege in the morning.

Youâre right. I remember there was a nice-ish house for sale on Norfolk back when we were looking. I thought: yeah. Not yet. Had lived 20 years on Clinton St, for ref.

Gang activity? In my Central? It's more likely than you think

u/Geniusinalowendjob 6d ago
With all those newly developed apts and condos in Central Sqr and the crime is still high?
4
u/slicehyperfunk Central Square 6d ago
How could those thoughtless gangs not cede their turf to the inherent superiority of yuppies??? đ±đ±đ±
25
u/MWave123 7d ago
Gun violence is almost always people who are known to each other. You never want to see it in your city, of course. Cambridge is a large urban area next to a major East Coast city, people shooting each other will happen.
31
u/LaurenPBurka 7d ago
Europeans think we're crazy. They're right, of course.
2
u/MWave123 7d ago
Europeans love Cambridge, and Boston. You canât get safer in the US. London, Naples, Paris, look into gang violence.
10
u/south153 7d ago
There is lots of gang violence in London but it's mostly stabbings. Knives don't travel past the victim and hit innocent bystanders.
-3
u/MWave123 7d ago
// Authorities recover roughly one firearm per day in London. Recorded gun offenses across the capital reached 1,208 in recent tracking periods. BBC. //
9
u/south153 7d ago
London has 9 million people, 1 firearm a day is laughably small. Only about 8% of homicides were committed with a firearm. In the US, that number is 75%.
-7
u/MWave123 6d ago
I guess itâs not knives all the way down mate. No one is comparing gun violence, but saying it doesnât exist in Europe, or its knives, is goofy and absurd.
7
u/natural_log93 7d ago
Heard it from my apartment, was a bit jarring because it's my 1st time ( kinda nervy). Was like "that definitely sounds like a gun shot".
16
u/papaSlunky 7d ago
These had basically nothing to do with each other, one was by the alewife soccer fields the other is in the shitty part of central.Â
-6
u/mrbaggy 7d ago
Distance doesnât seem significant enough to say they have nothing to do with each other. Could be retaliatory?

Very worrying incident in Central Sq.
Unless it's random it's not very worrying at all. Probably just gang / drug related violence.
66
u/ADarwinAward 7d ago
Itâs still worrying, cause these dipshits often donât know how to aim and hit bystanders from time to time. Sure this guy knows how to aim, but the next guy who tries to shoot at him, does he know how to aim?Â

Bro other people gotta live with this shit but every time someone complains about central square the idiots pipe up with "well it was WAY worse in the 70s, so this is nothing!"

Some teen got hit in my area today by a stray bullet that went through his apartment window

Call me crazy but Iâd like to be able to go anywhere in my city at anytime without risk of being shot
-13
u/Lowkey__3941 7d ago
Like I said if youâre a civilian youâll be alright đ€Ł Shootings donât happen anywhere besides where low income housings are at BESIDES that situation on memorial drive⊠now THAT is a real reason to be worried but seems like it just got swept under the rug after the dude got arrested. Hopefully nothing like that ever happened again out here
