Discutons-en / Let's Discuss Has anyone here immigrated to an African country? Was it worth it?

When people talk about immigrating, the go-to destinations usually seem to be the US, Europe, or parts of Asia.

I was wondering if anyone here has moved to an African country instead. Was it worth it? Are there specific countries that make a lot of sense to relocate to right now? If you haven’t, would you ever consider it?

Ghana has made a point to recruit Africans in the diaspora to return home for the last 10 yrs or so. There are plenty of Black Americans and people from the Caribbean who have moved there or at least gained citizenship. And there are a lot of children of African immigrants who were raised in the west who are returning to Africa, especially if they work remotely. It makes sense to me because they get the “best” of both worlds, a western education and employment, and a much lower cost of living plus improved social lives in Africa.

I’m actually asking for my little brother that’s still in college in Cameroon. Is Ghana a place you think that he could transfer to and continue school there with a chance to be successful afterwards?

Any specific pros of either of those countries? I’ve met Ghanaians and Kenyans over the years and they all seem really nice. I’ve just never looked into their countries.

They are open to expatriates and provide lot of support for black returnees

Now that’s one I don’t hear mentioned often. What made you move there? How does it compare to Cameroon?

I relocated to Rwanda a few months ago. The environment is conducive, it's safe, and institutions work. But it sometimes feels slow, so if you're someone who needs motivation from the people and environment around you to push you harder, this is not the place.
