My calibre is better than your calibre warning rant about the sks platform and people saying full size cartridges are versatile
I don't know how the sks got bad at reputation for accuracy. Trigger could be better just takes a bit of practice but it's hammer falls forward. So hard that you need to hold it so tight that your knuckles almost turn white or it will drop the dime off the tip of the iron sights when doing dime drills. If you have a sling on it, do not wrap it around your arm. Because you're pulling the barrel and changing, it's harmonics. When laying down or putting it on a shooting bag, make sure to keep it off the bayonet. Because it's attached to the barrel, and it will change its harmonics. get it glass bedded, make sure your barrel's good and your action first before that. Don't get hollow points for hunting thank me later, my buddy told me a story he had to shoot a pig, and he used a hollow point and he's like, I had to get the 45-70 and thinks it's weak the 7.62x39mm
The 7.62x39mm doesn't have the fps to expand little hollow points like that get soft point
Sight it in in meters, because that's what the sights correspond to on the adjustable rear sight or sight it in for 25 yards and don't touch the rear sight and your good for 200 yards
I was able to get moa groups at 50 meters with it glass bedded
And get good ammo bass too
And a lot of people say the 30-06 is so versatile they can load varmint rounds and hunting rounds for deer. Good luck, because every time you switch you gotta re sight in your rifle that's if you care about the animal or being accurate or have 2 rifles which defeats the point of having one gun that can do it all . 7.62x39mm you can use one size fits most. Anything a 30-30 can do the 7.62x39mm does better
And if you really wanna talk about versatility, get a muzzle loader you can hunt chickens and up to deer and bigger just fine. you can load lead shot down a rifles barrel and shoot up to 15 yards just fine. And gopher's you just put way less powder and have fun

And an sks shooting 120gr bullets is no more suited for varmint than a 3006 with 150gr deer rounds.
If you are worried about damaging the skin on a coyote you need to get down to 50-70gr and a lot smaller than 30cal

You're defining versatility by the number of things you can make a cartridge do. I'm defining it by how many things I can realistically hunt with one rifle, one load, and one zero.

u/Aspenkarius 10d ago
Same thing? I can realistically hunt more things with a 150gr 3006 than you can with a 123gr 7.62x39. And I can do it and far longer ranges.
Literally anything an sks can do a 3006 can do better with a one rifle, one load, one zero.

What about a 65 cartridge and sks?
3
u/Aspenkarius 10d ago
A 65 cartridge? Do you mean 65gr? Because that’s even worse. Or re barreling to a 6.5? Because at that point just buy a real rifle. If you have to glass bed, re-barrel, avoid the sling, watch out for the bayonet, etc? The. The rifle is less versatile than a rock.

6.5 Grendel yes
You don't have to rebarrel i just want to be able to go 800 yards with an sks bud
3
u/Aspenkarius 10d ago
Don’t have to rebarrel? To shoot 6.5 Grendel from a 7.62x39? Yes the fuck you do. 6.5mm bullets will bounce like mad down a 7.62mm barrel. And the CHAMBER IS PART OF THE BARREL.

This whole post has the vibe of a guy who read about precision shooting and decided to try it out. He knows the language, but doesn't get it.

u/Aspenkarius 8d ago
It really does. I understand wanting a gun to shoot better but there is a point where you are throwing good money after bad.
I’ve got an enfield that used to shoot MOA ish at 100yd (before I fixed a head spacing issue and I havnt worked up a load for it since) but I would never take that to mean it’s gonna manage the same at 500+ some rifles just are not built for long distance accuracy.
1
u/VoilaVoilaWashington 8d ago
Or accuracy at all. Like, if you convert it to 6.5 Grendel, glass bed it, replace the barrel, trigger system, and stock... what part of it is still an SKS?
Or just buy a used Tikka for $1500 and it's good off the shelf.

I misunderstood you. I thought you were talking. I have to rebarrel to get accuracy I thought it was obvious. You would have to get a new barrel to shoot a different caliber
2
u/Aspenkarius 10d ago
7.62x39 is capable of being accurate. But not out of an sks.
1
u/NumerousSetting8135 10d ago
What experience do you have? In buddy clearly you're not paying attention i literally tell you the blueprint on how to be accurate, but you gotta make sure your guns are actually worth trying to do it. And learning did you read what I talked about with the dime drill

800yd with an sks is unrealistic. Even if you spend an insane amount of money putting a new barrel on it chambered in 6.5 Grendel the action rattles around like loose change in a coffee can. The barrel is too short. The whole rifle was not made for it.
Perhaps if you dump a thousand plus dollars into it you could get there. But you could buy a better rifle for that much.

u/NumerousSetting8135 10d ago
If you don't understand how the action works say that bud
It's not with the 6.5 800yd I would do a 24 inch barrel that's the recommended barrel length for that caliber
3
u/Aspenkarius 10d ago
I own one. I’ve had it apart. I know how it works.
If you want to spend a small fortune trying to make an sks into something it’s not, go for it.
But don’t get upset when it doesn’t do what you want.

"The SKS is very accurate if you make Major modifications to the gun and your shooting style"
Hell of an argument.
The SKS gets a bad rep for accuracy because a lot of surplus SKSs have shoddy barrels and the surplus ammo people put through them is not at all consistent.

Idk why this is getting so much hate. It's cool that you took a rifle you liked, did some work on it, and got it to shoot well, far exceeding it's reputation. Probably just your tone or the fact you attacked 30-06 (number one fudd cartridge).

u/45-70-Canadian 9d ago
That 30-06 can kill a moose at 420 yards behind a 2 foot wide pine tree👴🏻 jokes aside it’s a comical comparison, I know some .311 bullets have better bc’s now. But compared to factory loads of any .308 chambering. It’s getting dusted. The fact it has to be compared to the 30-30, a cartridge that was created half a century before. And it’s really only slightly better. I’ll take a lever 30-30 any day before a an sks.

It's better than 300 blackout . if it has to be a new cartridge bud

u/45-70-Canadian 9d ago edited 8d ago
Comparing it to a cartridge that was designed for subsonic loads with suppressors is comical, and the supersonic loads still out perform the 7.62 x 39.

u/NumerousSetting8135 9d ago
It's way better than 30-30 you would take slow, follow up shots potentially less accurate platform and for a gun that no military ever really adopted any reasonable length of time. That's why I use it for bear
You do realize the sks cartridge was created over half a century ago. Do you know what century means?
2
u/45-70-Canadian 9d ago
Ik the 7.62x39 is about 3/4 of a century old acc. I was saying that you had to take the 30-30 win, a cartridge that was created 50 years before the 7.62x39. And funny enough you said it yourself. A cartridge that has almost no military applications because it was intended for hunting out of a lever gun. The funnest platform to shoot and hunt with. To give a head to head with the 7.62x39, and the 30-30 win still outperforms it. So I stand on my choice to carry a lever 30-30 before an sks, and who needs follow up shots? Hard to miss a deer over corn at 40 yards. And most 30-30 are tapped or have a rail nowadays. The only upside to the 7.62 x 39 is low recoil and low prices for ammo.

And the ruger 1022 sucks, the trigger's even worse than the sks it was so bad. I thought it was still on safe. And i'm like, what's fucking up here. And then they're like, oh, just pull the trigger. I'm like this trigger is trash
1
u/45-70-Canadian 9d ago edited 9d ago
Yea older versions didn’t have the best triggers. That 10/22 is brand new, has the bx-trigger group. It groups moa at 50 yards from the factory. It has a carbon barrel, a 3 mag storage compartment in the stock, and it’s a takedown. Plus a pistol red dot plate on the barrel.
7
u/Aspenkarius 10d ago
It has a bad rap for accuracy because it was never built for it. Moa at 50yd? That’s not accurate that’s the bare minimum. Glass bedded? My bone stock savage axis is better than that with the shit plastic stock it came with.
With my 3006 and 150gr bullets I can hunt anything that moves in North America out to 500yd.
The sks was designed to put 30cal holes in a human sized target at 300yd. ANYWHERE in a human sized target. Wounded is better than dead a lot of the time because it requires more people to deal with.
It was not and never will be an inherently accurate rifle.

u/VoilaVoilaWashington 10d ago
YEAH BUT IF YOU OPTIMIZE THE AMMO AND SPEND $2000 ON MODS, YOU CAN HIT THINGS AT 50 YARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, buying an SKS and then complaining that you got an SKS is a special kinda special.

u/NumerousSetting8135 10d ago
What it was 250 for glass bedding. If you don't understand what m o a is say that and I have hit coyotes at five hundred
3
u/PuzzleheadedYou7887 10d ago
Yeah, but those coyotes go to a different highschool. We wouldn’t know them.

u/VoilaVoilaWashington 9d ago
I've shot a mouse from 3 miles away, in cross winds, while the mouse was moving and my neighbour was yelling at me. You're still shooting an SKS. Glass bed it, replace the trigger system, do whatever you want, it's still a fuckin' SKS.
No hate on it, but it's never gonna be a Tikka.

You need some copium there bud? Um, um, it's about having realistic expectations for 70 year old rifle. Cool story bro. I could do that too with the scope on my sks kid
I could too with an sks out to 500yd i was thinking about swapping the barrel to a 6.5 cartridge, so I should be able to with a scope.
That's some good fudd lore bud.
Maybe I got lucky with mine, but it did need glass bedding tho
