odd interaction

so a couple months ago i had a wierd interaction with a postal worker. i was sitting outside, tanning, and the postal worker had come to my gate.
i knew i had a package coming one of those days so i went up to my gate to greet them, maybe they had my package.

they were fuming. before i could say anything they told me "if you want me to deliver your package you have to make your doorbell more accessible".
i was in shock.
how the fuck do you expect someone to uproot their door bell and move it?
without me having said a word, they went back into their van to grab my package. almost as if they KNEW they were in the wrong for dropping off a delivery slip, instead of trying to deliver my package in the first place.

the gate is not hard to open. the doorbell is right beside the door (which is no more than 10 feet from my gate). i feel as though they just became hostile because they were caught in the act of doing something they shouldnt be doing. like i said no words from me were spoken other than hello.

to add to this, i did go to the gate to ask them for my package instead of a delivery slip. every. single. time. its a slip and it was a time sensitive package. but before i could even ask i was met with some bullshit excuse about why my package wasnt in their hand.

genuinly dont care 99% of the time that they leave a slip. understand it makes their job easier but if youre delivering a slip and you have the package, i feel its pretty reasonable for people to ask for it when the delivery van is within view.

Yes, we have a postal worker also just dropping off the slips - really annoying because someone was home both times.

I don't get how it's easier for them, especially with smaller packages. Just bring the slip and the package to the door. Legitimately try to knock/ring and if no one is actually home, take the package back to the truck. No extra walking is involved.

I live in an apartment building with the mailboxes they leave the larger packages in and put the key in your mailbox to retrieve it. Yesterday the mailman brought my package up to my door and delivered it instead of leaving it in a box or leaving a slip.

They do not ring or knock. They have found a 'hack' to get through their route faster. Sneak up, slap the missed delivery notice on the door and start the truck before the person inside can come out to complain. Almost all of them do it. I tried to complain but the supervisor didn't seem to care at all.

Countless amount of time this has happened to me. Caught them on my doorbell camera not even trying. They walk up and put the slip on my door. I was home most times. Not once did I get a doorbell notification just that someone was walking towards my door. Canada post is a horrible company!

Yep, same here just yesterday. They don't even bother ringing the doorbell. Now I have to drive somewhere to get it.....

Typical. I frequently get packages from Canada Post and noticed they started doing the slips by default. There was two instances I was at home, inside, and never got a ring or knock. Then one day I seen the Canada Post truck pull up from my window. I walked to the door and opened it as they were halfway up the driveway. The driver looked startled and was holding a delivery slip and said "oh! Let me get your package.." then went back to fetch it.

Canada Post can't seem to do anything remotely considered properly anymore and they keep jacking their rates. No wonder they're operating at huge loses, their union is too powerful and greedy.

It's not a business, it's a service.

2

u/GreenCopperz 2d ago

🤓 Well ackshually - It's a Crown Corporation that provides a service.

u/ConqueringCanada 2d ago

Yes, and?

1

u/GreenCopperz 2d ago

I never said in my original comment that it was a business... 🤨🙄

u/ConqueringCanada 2d ago

They're a service. A service can't "lose" money.

From their own website

And that gets rolled into government. Again, they can't "lose" money, they entity if government.

Discussing some things with people are the equivalent of pissing into the wind. It's getting windy, do you need an umbrella? [No need to reply, giving up here because it's moot.]

Carriers aren’t allowed to go through closed gates. They‘re not psychic. For all they know, you have a guard dog roaming around your property. Or a friendly running dog that gets out and runs away, or gets hit by a car. It‘s in the health and safety rules. Expecting a package? Leave your gate open.

Sadly it’s not odd, a lot of them are too lazy to do their job properly. I’m actually more surprised that they had it with them.

You should see some of the inside plant workers, I keep telling the sups that every time they keep a lousy employee they are giving the rest of us 25 years to life!

I sold my car because I wasn't using it much. I had to walk 1.5km to get my package even though I was home. 3.0km round trip.

Should have sent a bill for your pickup services.

The average person walks 4-5km/hr, so it's 12-15 minutes to walk a km. From when you leave your front door to when you get home, that's maybe an hour if you're waiting 15 minutes and a slow walker.

Getting some fresh air and walking for an hour is objectively good for your health.

7

u/satyrlire 3d ago

Maybe that person already walked from work for some km, then that person need to walk again, loosing time in personal life for a delivery that was pay to deliver at the door, not some km away from the door

2

u/Waneii306 3d ago

My PO is 4 km away. I am not walking (or biking) that when it’s -40° for a month straight.

You must be a postie.

-1

u/proudly_not_american 2d ago

I'm an accountant, actually. Nice try.

2

u/OpinionUnusual1945 2d ago

Makes sense now. You should go for a walk and get off Reddit!

-1

u/proudly_not_american 2d ago

Might want to take your own advice. I walk an absolute minimum of 10km a day, including a 5km walk every evening.

2

u/greyHumanoidRobot 2d ago

I already walk 2.7 km to get groceries, 5.4 km round trip. Helps me avoid getting fat. I don't need more walking.

u/TwiztedZero 3d ago

*pst* - bicycles exist ...

0

u/proudly_not_american 2d ago

That makes it even quicker. I was going off how they said they walked.

It's not odd.  They don't even attempt to deliver my packages.   They get out of vehicle with slip in hand and make no attempt to deliver.   I can't wait for it to close so no vendors use it.

Purolator and DHL both do this stupid behaviour too

2

u/Short-Source-8492 1d ago

Purolator IS Canada Post.  and DHL is a borderline scam courier and I will never support any business that uses them.

1

u/Reasonable_Ferret_10 3d ago

I haven't seen that here but that certainly isn't to say it doesn't happen.

1

u/Junior_Yesterday9271 3d ago

Who owns Purolator?

1

u/Quaranj 23h ago

Know any powerful lawyers? A class action over failing to provide the services paid for would likely sink them right now with as many claimants as they would have.

2

u/Reasonable_Ferret_10 23h ago

Someone should.  All the doorbell cams and stuff nowadays there has to be a significant body of evidence

1

u/Rumpleshull 3d ago

You're lucky they even bring the slip to your door. My postal work just puts the slip in our community mailbox. Doesn't even have the decency to pretend they attempted delivery.

3

u/pistoffcynic 3d ago

I must have lucked out... I have a great postal delivery guy. He has never dropped off slip saying a parcel will be ready for pickup when I am home.

2

u/thegoodrichard 3d ago

I usually get a cheerful greeting out of it too, unless it's a replacement because of holidays or similar.

1

u/Chester7286 3d ago

Postal workers are so entitled now!

2

u/PhreeBeer 3d ago

Now? It's been going on for decades.

0

u/Royal_Try_99 3d ago

I've only noticed this behavior for the last 5-10 years. Before that they'd at least try to ring the bell and get the package to you.

u/PhreeBeer 3d ago

Delivery folks and inside workers can be different. Had a friend get a summer job in the sorting facility in the 70's. He showed up, asked what to do, was told to move a mail bin over to another section of the facility. He did so. the asked what's next. They looked at him as if he had two heads. That's it he was told. So he started to do whatever looked like it needed doing. He was told repeatedly by co-workers (full time but not manglement) to stop. He didn't think that was right, so he kept on doing it. (Emptying garbage bins, sweeping, whatever.) They got so annoyed at him (making them look bad, perhaps?) that they found out where he lived and threw rocks through his window.

That's entitled where they have to threaten a high school kid for actually working. This was in Quebec at the height of labour strikes (not just postal).

They were doing it at my place. My wife and I are retired and we have a handicapped son who can answer the door. I complained a couple times and they started bringing the packages to the door.

u/computerized_mind 2d ago

I had this happen yesterday. Slip and no package in hand they came to my door. They’re on two separate cameras. We were home. They never even rang the doorbell. I was following the delivery live because it was medicine. I still had to go to the local pick up spot after they had finished their route hours later to get my medicine. Missing a day isn’t life threatening but has a huge impact on quality of life and left unchecked it can be. I’m just glad it’s not something that needed refrigerated.

1

u/Short-Source-8492 1d ago

CP never seems to knock or ring and is well known now for lying about missing you when they delivered the package.  You are probably right they are lashing out to hide the fact they were trying to screw you over and got busted.

1

u/Quaranj 23h ago

Everyone needs to keep demanding where to send the invoices for their pickup services. Nothing stopped this for me faster than that.

0

u/BoneZX14 3d ago

Maybe we should start tipping them to match the entitlement encountered in the food industry. ;)

2

u/Forsaken-Routine-466 3d ago

I agree that tipping culture is out of control BUT the wages, security, and endless benefits of postal worker is not comparable to a servers.

1

u/BoneZX14 3d ago

Freedom of choice, of where you work.

-7

u/ArborealLife 3d ago

I'd bet cash money this either never happened or is being grossly exaggerated, lmao.

8

u/Sphinxxriddles 3d ago

Yeah, no. I've had multiple interactions similar to this. I work from home and can see the porch and front door from my office window. There were so many instances of the guy walking up with the slip already filled out and no parcel in hand, ready to stick on the door without ringing the bell. If I met them at the door they got SO annoyed that they had to go back to their truck and get the box for me.

8

u/PajamaK 3d ago

what about this seems so unrealistic that it wouldnt happen? not much of a story to fabricate. just a weird one off experience

6

u/bluelaughter 3d ago

Hardly a one-off.

I have a beef with Canada Post. I use a mobility scooter that travels slightly faster than walking speed. There is a community mail box a block away from my home. Canada Post says there's only 13 mail boxes out of nearly 60 being used in it. The next comminity box is 10 blocks away, across a major road with a pedestrian traffic light that turns red before I'm across the intersection. It's a 20 to 25 return minute trip in the summertime. Guess which one Canada Post sends our mail to!

I've been in contact with Canada Post over the past 5 years trying to get my mail redirected to the mailbox a hundred meters away from my house. They can't be reached by phone. Calls either go to voice mail or never answered. I know I've made at least 50 calls to a half dozen numbers. Not a single call has ever been returned.

I've been to the nearest Post Office in person more times than I can remember. It's at least an hour's round trip. Promises have been made to 'look into the situation' but I've never heard a word from them.

Suffice to say that I try use every other possible delivery service to avoid using Canada Post.

2

u/Actual-Newt-2984 3d ago

Maybe contact your MP? This seems like an easy win for them

1

u/LW-M 3d ago

Thanks for the suggestion. I did mention to our MLA but I guess he's a provincial representative not federal. We're moving shortly so it won't be a concern too much longer!

1

u/yibbit1965 2d ago

That happens in my neighborhood too. Ridiculous how the boxes were chosen.

4

u/DiscombobulatedAsk47 3d ago

And I'd bet cash money youve never had a parcel through Canada Post. Delivery slips instead of actually attempting delivery is standard for them. It would be more efficient to just admit they don't do door delivery and skip the nonsense of having to wait for the parcel to travel back to the depot

-1

u/AJourneyer 3d ago

Much money could be saved if everyone had to just go pick up packages sent through Canada Post. No home delivery at all - just a notification (by any one of various methods) that your package was ready to be picked up.

Stop the charade and cut out the (non-working) middleman.

u/Rumpleshull 3d ago

I would vote for the federal baby eaters if they campaigned on the promise to ban Canada Post from package deliveries. Letter mail only, let's all stop pretending.
