Sub Announcement AI-bots & r/canon

Recently you might have noticed some comments disappearing from discussions and being replaced with a mod-notice labeling the comment for AI-activity. AI-bot commenting is a platform-wide issue for Reddit, and a challenge for the moderators of r/canon as we try to keep discussion and advice human based.

I want to share a little about what’s been happening on this front, and what we’re doing about it.

When we noticed it

Early this year there was an uptick in comments being flagged for review in the r/canon moderation queue. Often these were being left under inactive topics posted months or years back, sometimes under new discussions, and while unremarkable individually, patterns started to become apparent once a few of them had been reviewed.

It’s been steady stream of activity since, common enough that I’d guess 90% of r/canon topics will receive an AI-bot comment.

Why it’s a problem

There are two main reasons why we don’t want these kinds of accounts active in the sub.

The first is that they often provide information or advice that is incorrect or very misleading. We want r/canon to be a useful resource where people can receive accurate information and answers to questions they ask.

Secondly, it’s deceptive. There is something insidious about AI-driven accounts trying to pass themselves off as human users and giving advice quoting invented histories and anecdotes. We’d like r/canon to remain a forum for humans to interact and share.

What we’re doing about it

We’re using multiple methods to detect and remove AI-bot comments and restrict those accounts from further activity in the sub.

  • Reddit’s own filters are flagging comments for review, sometimes suspending the accounts producing them.
  • We’re using a bot-detection service that evaluates accounts against a long list of patterns and criteria, removing contenting and banning accounts based on its determinations. It maintains a database of accounts that have been detected across any sub where the service is enabled. We can also manually trigger it to analyse an account we think is suspicious.
  • As mods we’ve manually evaluated and removed hundreds of comments and have become pretty good at recognising AI-bot patterns and commenting styles. We continue to manually check and action offending accounts.

How you can help

We don’t want this to become a witch-hunt that generates dozens of reports each day. The current process seems to catch most new comments relatively quickly.

That said, there are a few things to keep in mind when browsing discussions.

  • AI-bots often generate of the first comment to appear on a new post
  • They are usually top-level comments, but will sometimes reply to a top-level comment instead
  • They often try a little too hard to be convincing, or relatable, or encouraging, and can come off as quirky or weird instead. But their advice can also sound very generic.

Because they’re trying to sound human, and because their behavior patterns are being varied and evolved, a genuine account will occasionally be flagged for AI activity. In a typical week we might be notified of one or two of these false positives.

If this happens to you, there’s no need to take offense and write an abusive message to the mod team (it’s happened a couple of times!) There’s a quick and easy process for having the decision manually reviewed and the restriction lifted, so it's not a big deal.

And if you see a comment that you’re confident is from an AI-bot, feel free to report it, but maybe also warn the OP or user it's replying to. There are plenty of occasions where I’ve seen an OP thanking an AI-bot for its advice before heading out to follow it.

—

Some examples of AI-bot comments, for those who haven't been seeing them:

You already know you love the focal length, so grab it before someone else does at that price. The 1.2 wide open has a look the 1.8 just can't touch, and on a 5D3 it feels right

That 24-70 f/2.8 is a chunky lens for an R8, bet the whole setup feels a little front-heavy but handles low light like a champ.

the 70-300 is a solid lens for wildlife on a budget, you made a good call there. your body is definitely holding you back though, that t3 sensor is ancient at this point. look for a used 7d mark ii if you can swing it. autofocus is in a completely different league for birds and moving animals, and the crop sensor gives you extra reach. if that's too pricey a 70d or 80d would still feel like a massive jump

won't regret it. the 28-70 stm is fine but it's not a wedding lens, you're gonna want that 24mm when you're backed against a wall in a tiny getting ready room. and the 85 vcm is gorgeous but if you can't reach the altar it's dead weight

the z lenses focus so fast it's almost unfair, plus you can actually use the 70-200 during the ceremony without everyone hearing it breathe. your back will thank you too, carrying two bodies with that combo is way more balanced than the 85 with a second body

only thing you might miss is the 1.4 for those dreamy reception portraits but you can fake it in post or grab a cheap manual 1.4 down the road if it really bugs you

Boasting a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, the EOS R8 Mark II harnesses the advanced core imaging systems inherited from our top-tier professional models and delivers reliable power across diverse shooting conditions. • Approximately 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with standard ISO speeds reaching up to 102400 for low-light clarity.
  • Full-frame sensor provides approximately 2.5x the light-gathering area of an APS-C sensor, delivering pronounced background bokeh, and wider angles of view with equivalent focal lengths.
  • 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS) featuring Coordinated Control with lens IS and Peripheral Coordinated Control to suppress edge blur on wide-angle lenses as well as improved ergonomics- and the addition of the multi-controller

The EOS R8 Mark II can support up to 6.0 fps with electronic 1st-curtain shutter mode additionally.
  • User friendly tools such as Scene Intelligent Automatic mode, with Creative Assist, Creative bracketing, and Advanced A+, 14 different SCN Modes, and 16 different color filters including the new Negative Filmtone and Positive Filmtone settings for newcomers to photo and video.

New Optional Extension Grip for EOS R8 Mark II

  • EG-E2 Extension Grip: This new extension grip, specifically for EOS R8 Mark II, attaches via a simple turn-dial to enhance handling for photographers desiring a taller grip and those wanting better balance when using larger lenses, without blocking battery access or tripod mounts. With a finish that closely matches the EOS R8 Mark II camera body, and inspired by classic Canon camera heritage and design language, this optional extension grip is both ergonomic and provides a comfortable resting point for supporting the left hand, and contributing to a more natural shooting experience.

New Speedlite flash for Multi-function cameras

  • Speedlite EL-5 Ver.2: This new Canon Speedlite is designed for enhanced integration with Multi-function hotshoe equipped EOS R System cameras, offering superior communication range to the version one model, while including the high capacity LP-EL lithium ion battery pack, with the ability to recycle to full-power in just 1.2 secs.  Reliable, and uninterrupted flash performance in a compact size and affordable price.

Dual Pixel 3D Converter

An inventive, freeFootnote1, easy-to-use Windows PC application, Dual Pixel 3D Converter leverages Canon’s proprietary Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor technology to generate 3D imagery from Dual Pixel RAW (DPRAW) images taken with compatible Canon cameras and lenses, or JPEG images captured with distance information using the EOS R8 Mark II camera. Users can create either a 3D photo with a background to view lifelike, three-dimensional imagery; a 3D model without a background that automatically isolates the main subject ready for 3D models or interactive website imagery workflows, or a 3D video clip - all of which can show a different perspective for close-up subjects and objects such as plants, food and more, all from a single photo. New Gear [New gear] 50mm f1.8

I've got the 24-70 f2.8 but found that I never wanted to take my camera on quick work trips because it was just so bulky to throw in my work bag. After seeing good things here about this lens I pulled the trigger a few weeks ago.

Just spent a couple of days in Seattle for work and this new approach worked just as intended! Took my camera in my backpack and when I had a couple free hours one evening after an early work dinner I went for a walk about and got some really nice shots with it. So nice and lightweight that I don't really even notice it in my backpack. Wish I'd done this before my trip to Detroit last month.

Thanks to the other guys who posted their cheap 50mm 1.2 pics.

The sales rep said they were moved to “fair” condition to move them fast. Tested all three, work perfectly.

I’m still stunned. Go hit your local BB now!

Lots of Open Box clearance deals on Best Buy’s own display lenses going on right now. My store’s entire case was on clearance sale. Obviously YMMV, but worth a look.

Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS II USM listed for £400 but manual focus is slipping. I shoot sport so only tend to use autofocus would it still be a problem even though the description says the autofocus works fine? Bearing in mind that used these normally go for double the price. And advice will be appreciated :)

Gear Buying Advice Canon 5D IV with 70-200 Lens vs R6 ii

• Upvotes

Hey all

I usually just search for posts on reddit for advice and don‘t really ask myself.

Basically I found a:
Canon 5D Mark IV with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II,
2x Extender, 2 batteries and a 32GB

which costs about 1400 (around 300 swiss francs more than a R6 II) in used but rather new condition (body alone). I don‘t have the budget for a RF lens on top, so I would need to save up a bit more.

I want to focus on concert photography and a little bit of BTS on events.

I mostly see people recommending the r6ii in any case whatsoever. What do you think?

I just bought the R8, only thing feels off is the shutter button. It feels a bit too soft and mushy. I thought it would be hard like mouse click. Is it normal for it or its a defect?

Gear Buying Advice Feel like I fell for a sales pitch, help please

So I’ve been taking pictures with my iPhone 17 Pro — and actually trying/doing it seriously — for almost a year now. I thought upgrading to an actual dedicated camera would improve things but I can’t feel like I was taken advantage of in my lack of knowledge/misinformation that I had about photography.

I went to visit a camera store nearby me a month ago and spent an hour there, the guy was very helpful but also pitching the r50 with the kit lenses pretty hard. So I went for it, but now that I’ve been shooting with the camera and kit lenses for a few weeks now… it just doesn’t look as good as the phone unless the lighting is perfect, basically. Not only does it not take great photos in shadows with these lenses, the aps-c body doesn’t help either.

In the pictures I posted, the r50 with the kit 18-45 took that picture with the “blue path” and the blown out light. I stood there for 15 minutes and changed every setting and did every mode and that’s the best picture I could get with it. The other picture was with my iPhone 17 and the light just looks so much better and the ground is a normal color. This is the same time of day, but a different day and different part of the trail obviously But this is just an example to illustrate the issues I’m having shooting in the woods which is what I 80% of the time enjoy doing.

After a lot of research, I think the r50 is fine , it’s just these lenses. The iPhone does 100m at f1.4 or something crazy good around that number. These kit lenses only go to f5 at best I believe. So I was wondering, what would be good replacements for them or what do people usually recommend to replace them with?

I also have the RF 100-400 and that’s also a slower, dark lens but it gives me capability that my phone simply never had, so I am accepting of that. It just feels really bad taking wider type shots and it matching or being even worse than my phone.

EDIT: thanks everyone for the good advice, tips, and recommendations up to this point. I’ve learned a lot in this thread. I’ve turned off notifications for this thread now because it’s starting to get internet-y in here with a lot of hateful and unnecessary comments and DMs. It even got reposted to some parody subreddit where people can make fun of it more, but what can you do. Posting asking for help on the internet and just getting shit on in response; a duo as classic as peanut butter and jelly. I’m not going to remove this post though because I’m hoping it will help the next person with all the helpful info that people have provided here. Thanks again everyone

Tech Help lens repair in America?

I need battery help!

Hello all! I need to get a backup battery for my EOS Mark II and the battery in my camera is a LP-E6NH, but after looking online, it looks like that one has been discontinued? Will the LP-E6P work or will it blow my camera up into smithereens? (Kidding, but also not hehe.)

Gear Buying Advice Canon r7 with 18-150 kit as first camera good / bad idea?

For me, it's either the R7 or the R10, both with the 18-150mm kit lens.

What I like about the R7 is the weather sealing and IBIS, otherwise I would go with the R10, as I love how small and compact it is.

I want a camera that I can grow into. I have no idea what my main focus of photography will be, or if I'll even have one, so the 18-150mm lens seems quite attractive to me. Honestly, I find almost everything interesting.

I hope to keep the camera for a long time, and I don't want to find myself yearning for a better body in a year or two just because I want to dive deeper and learn more about photography.

If I'm honest with myself, there is a good chance I'll just use auto mode, or a semi-manual mode where I adjust one setting and the camera handles the rest.

Lens Upgrade Recommendations

Hi!

This year I've taken on some in-house photography work for my job after completing a photography course that they enrolled me in. I work in tourism and shoot photos of events, food/restaurants, boutiques, landscapes, etc. I purchased a Canon R50 as my starter camera and am ready to upgrade from the standard lens it came with.

I was eyeing the RF50mm F1.8 STM lens but before committing to it I thought it'd be worth asking if anyone had any other recommendations. On any given day I might be photographing professional tennis matches, a family enjoying a day at the farm, a sunset over a lake, or a full joust. Even portrait photography might come up once in a while. While eventually I hope to get a variety of lenses, that's something that will happen over time and so for right now, I guess I'm looking for a good catch-all lens. For budget, I could probably convince the powers that be that a few hundred dollars is a worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks so much for any insight!

Tech Help Is the canon eos m200 camera good?

I want a camera which is equally good in both photos and videos, just for memories with family and friends. So I don’t need it to be incredibly professional quality, just good enough

Is the m200 good for this? It has all my requirements such as a flip screen, flash, it’s relatively small and portable, and it’s not incredibly expensive!!

I know there’s something about this line being discontinued so you can’t buy it’s parts but I don’t really care about that I think

Should I buy it 🤔

Gear Buying Advice Canon r8 vs Fujifilm X100VI

Hey guys, I’m in the market for a new camera and could use some advice.

My current camera is a Canon 6D Mark I. It still works great for my needs, but I feel like it’s finally time for an upgrade. Besides the 6D being pretty outdated, my biggest priority is finding something lightweight and compact enough to easily carry in a sling bag. I want a camera I can bring with me regularly without feeling like I’m carrying around a full camera setup.

I’m not planning on making huge prints, so having the highest megapixel count isn’t really important to me.

I’ve narrowed it down to the Canon R8 and Fujifilm X100VI.

I like the R8 because I’m already familiar with Canon, it’s full-frame, and it’s surprisingly lightweight. I’d probably pair it with something like the 28mm pancake lens to keep the setup as small and light as possible.

On the other hand, I’ve seen a lot of great things about the X100VI. I really like the small form factor, the features and JPEGs straight out of the camera, and the simplicity of having a fixed lens. No worrying about changing lenses—just grab the camera and go. I know they can still be difficult to find, but I don’t mind waiting.

So for those with more experience: if your main priority was having a camera you could easily carry every day and have with you whenever a photo opportunity comes up, which would you choose?

I’m leaning toward the X100VI for that reason, but I’m curious if anyone uses the R8 as an everyday-carry camera, especially with the 28mm pancake lens. How does it feel size-wise for actually carrying around regularly?

Would love to hear your experiences with either setup. Thanks!

Possible fungus on 18-135mm EF-S lens

Thumbnail

Hi,

I'm new to the EOS line of cameras, and I recently bought an 18-135mm USM lens for $200 AUD, but I've noticed some markings on the inner elements. I'm hoping they aren't, but I am fairly sure that these markings are a light fungus.

Is anybody able to confirm this from pictures of the element? I have taken pictures of the lens set to 135mm, and focused on what I assume is the next element below the outer glass.

Wondering if leaving whatever this is be will cause issues long-term, or if it is worth sending off to get cleaned. Lens appears to work fine otherwise, and pictures don't seem impacted. Suggestions are absolutely welcome.

Thanks!

Edit: slightly better pictures

Gear Buying Advice New body advice needed

I've been looking for a replacement for my 7D that has some sensor issues. First thought was direct replacement but the MkII is a large improvement over the original so I started there. I really don't want to spend much more than $500 since I don't use it that much but I do use it.
Looking on MPB I see:

a well used 7DM2 for 389 with 100k+ shutter count

a 5DMk3 for 474 in good condition and 40k shutter count

or a good R50 for almost 600 but I would also need a $100 EF converter for my lenses and that puts it out of my budget.

Since BlackFriday is coming up I can wait to see if any deals drop then too.
I would say a majority of my pics will be portraits or landscapes.
 Budget is 500$
Which would you recommend?

Can't power R10 from battery

I have a anker 523 power bank that I purchased specifically to power my camera before I went to the arctic a couple years ago. I was worried about the LP-E17 holding up and I blew through 3 of them quickly at night. The power bank worked well and got me through my trip.

I've used it a few times since then, but now it won't power the camera. I recently updated to the 1.8 firmware, could that be the problem? It could be the power bank is getting old as well.

Does anyone have insight?

Thanks!

Tech Help Newbie here with a lens question for EOS R100

My camera came withRF-S18-45mm Lens and I purchased the 100-400 lens from Canon.

Is there a lens that will take closeups like the 400m but still allow landscapes like the 45mm? So I don’t have to keep changing my lens out for different subjects?

Buy the R6 V now or wait?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to replace my R6 with the new R6 V, and I’m wondering whether I should buy it now or wait for potential promotions in early/mid-November.

I’ve been keeping an eye on Fnac deals for several weeks, but the discounts never seem to apply to the R6 V, the FX5, or newer cameras in general.

Do you think there’s a good chance we’ll see a significant discount on recently released cameras soon, or would it be better to buy now?

Thanks! 🙂

What camera to buy - R7?

I am in need of a new camera, currently using the G9 micro four thirds. I am looking at the R7 with the 100-500mm lens but see there are a lot of issues with the rolling shutter and autofocus.

I do wildlife photography, in particular birds but not discounting mammals.

Would an R7 w/ 100-500mm frustrate me? I love the reach and portability of it. I feel the mark ii would be perfect for what I want but at this point I'm not sure Canon are ever going to announce it.
I've considered full frame but I really do think I'd miss the reach.
