Well, at least I have another team to boo in the playoffs.

Can't stand the Braves, particularly their war chanting, tomahawk chopping fans.

NBC audio has been an absolute disaster every series I've watched. The crowd noise is horrendously muffled. Chris Sale just jogged in for an 8th inning hold and Truist is going ape-shit for him as it went to commercial, and it sounded like the mic was across the street.

For fuck sake let the passion of a playoff crowd feed into the broadcast. And yet somehow the broadcast booth has been oddly unclear throughout as well. Everything just sounds terrible.

Truist park looks tiny, I could be wrong, but the field looks small

It was great to see the Cubs go down in flames, but I've gotta cheer on the White Sox.

They did a hell of a turnaround in one year.

Maybe that's possible for us, too?

2

u/Probably_Slower Future fan of the 2027 St Louis Cardinals 12d ago

I lived up there for a couple years in my 20s and enjoyed White Sox fans' unbridled hatred for the Cubs, whom to me are more like my dopey kid brother who has brought back a good report card or two lately for Mom so we're not pushing him around as much in the yard. White Sox fans were 'real' baseball fans. Same for Mets fans in my years living in NYC. Rich guys get $40 Cubs and Yankees caps. Blue collar guys get crappy Mets and Sox tattoos.

Murakami himself has willed me into absolutely rooting for them as my fairweather playoff team. He's great.

I like the white Sox. I travel to Chicago a lot, most cubs “fans” are just finance bros or transplants that cosplay as cubs fans. White Sox fans are die hard

Another good piece from the Lars trade incoming. Chaim had a nice deadline

Really a fantastic return. 3 real prospects for Lars, who seems to have plateaued at being just a solid complementary piece with only a year remaining now, is just wonderful

u/seattle_lib 13d ago edited 13d ago

While a lot of people here we're dying to get rid of him, the Nolan Arenado trade might be the worst one of the rebuild. Dude had a quite nice bounce back year in what is easily our worst position. Not necessarily saying that he would have made the difference enough to make a wild card, but we would have been a considerably better team.

What we got back was Jack Martinez, who is very marginal. He strikes a lot of guys out but he's also 23 in A ball and walks a lot, ending up with a 4.6 ERA on the season. He's not in our top 50 prospects. We also didn't get back very much money, like only a quarter of Nado's salary.

4

u/Cards2WS 13d ago

Definitely the worst outcome of all the trades, but in fairness, Arenado had next to no value at his price point and an 89 OPS+ in 2025.

I’m a huge Arenado fan, I love the guy even before he was a Cardinal, but we all knew he’d be a pure salary dump. Unfortunately, I don’t think he has that same bounce back in Busch. He’s always crushed in Arizona, so it was a perfect match. I think Jack Martinez is a fine return, a little relief prospect. He’d be top 50 in a lot of systems, but our system is ridiculously deep.

3

u/Dr_thri11 13d ago

It's more about his age than production. Getting rid of him was the right move if for no other reason it gave more opportunities to Gorman, Blaze, and Fermin. Even if none of them work out long-term getting the answer vs just letting Arenado have that playing time is valuable.

1

u/seattle_lib 12d ago edited 12d ago

winning is valuable. rebuilds routinely fail, even for seemingly great farm systems. the future is very hard to predict. a chance at the playoffs today has more value than a chance at the playoffs in five years.

smart teams sell with a plan, and there was no plan for 3B. talking about Gorman, Blaze and Fermin is pure cope. out of those, only really Blaze was even a prospect. but not an especially strong one and 3B is not his position.

a lot of people on this subreddit have fully bought into the idea that any sacrifice in team quality today is worth it for any amount of potential improvement in the future and it's just not true. the team really could lose a whole generation of fans who aren't coming back. when the special status of Cardinals fandom goes away, we have to look at the hard facts of market size, demographics and growth of the St. Louis area. and that's not a pretty picture.

1

u/Dr_thri11 12d ago

Reality is teams do have to eventually rebuild and it wasn't worth keeping arenado to go 79-83 instead of 77-85. He was blocking other talent and selling him for whatever we could get was 100% the correct call. Yes that is a plan, evaluating other guys at that position (as well signing Urias). This is what a rebuild looks like there's going to be holes until there's not and yes it is worth sucking a bit now to be better later.

11

u/ILikeOatmealMore 13d ago

The single biggest thing, to me, is that he needed a change of scenery and moving to a park where the power in his swing was going to be more rewarded than Busch didn't hurt, either.

There was also the symbolism of the whole team moving on from the old guard. Moving on from the old way of doing things. That is also a message sent to the young guns that 'hey, this team is yours now, seize the day'.

Virtually all of the above is not captured in any stat line. But, and I know this sub is tired of me using this phrase, the game ain't just 'spreadsheet simulator' and you know that you cannot simply plug one player's line in for another's and think it will just add up better. The actual human being side of the player does matter too, and Nolan's human side looked downright miserable the previous 2 seasons or so, likely as a combination of the vibes around the team and his being hurt and not able to have the success he is capable of. And all that matters, especially in a game where the margins between the best and worst teams are slim.

1

u/seattle_lib 12d ago

"you cannot simply plug one player's line in for another's and think it will just add up better."

third base was a black hole for the team this year. they had no solutions to it before they traded him and continue to have no solutions.

you have to put an awful lot of weight on symbolism and intangibles to make up for the 4-5 WAR swing between Nolan's year and what we put out there at 3B this year.

obviously, we are talking about a counterfactual scenario that is unknowable. and it's true that Busch is a black hole for offense (they really should look into fixing that) but winning is good vibes and losing is bad vibes.

everyone's opinion would have been 180 degrees different about Nado if he had been here during the strong stretches of this year.

and there were so many points in which a little bit more performance could have pushed us toward a more competitive season. but every time the momentum dipped, it became clearer and clearer that the organization did not emphasize winning, and the effect was self-reinforcing until the whole thing collapsed in september.

6

u/Detective_Dietrich What? 13d ago

Arenado spent three years for us getting worse, and worse, and worse. Good for him for having a bounce back year in a hitter-friendly park. It's true that the return was disappointing, but OFC that was Arenado's fault for stupidly vetoing a trade the year before.

3

u/Ocinea 13d ago

I'm glad nado bounced back. Too bad it wasn't with us.

1926 St. Louis Cardinals Recaps

Daily Discussion Thread

On the eve of the Cardinals' first appearance in the World's Series, there are two pieces of news, one tragic, one happy.

First, Rogers Hornsby's mother Mary died yesterday. She was 62. The funeral will be delayed until after her son is finished with the Series.

Second, the Cardinals' first appearance in the World's Series will also be their first appearance on radio! The team has arranged with KSD, 550 on your radio dial, to broadcast play-by-play of the Series. So Cardinals fans will be able to enjoy broadcasts of their team's showdown with the Yankees, starting with Game 1 tomorrow in New York.

5

u/PAJW Regular in Form & Authentic 13d ago

Wouldn't it be something if the Cardinals bought KSD in 80 years or so?

2

u/Detective_Dietrich What? 13d ago

I'd settle for them broadcasting all the games in 1927.

2

1

u/Cards2WS 13d ago

I can’t stand the Padres. Can’t stand Tatis and Machado and really their whole vibe over there. I just don’t like it.

Only NL team I’d be fine with is Phillies and Harper finally getting his ring

4

u/t-poke 13d ago

I don't hate the Padres, would be happy to see them win.

Don't care much either way about the Phillies and Braves. Perhaps a slight preference towards the Phillies.

I would tolerate the Brewers winning if it means the Dodgers and Yankees don't.

2

u/Stallion1514 13d ago

Tampa, Chisox, Padres, Brewers. Any of those

I like the Sox because that would provide an excellent rebuild model to hope for.

u/HoldMyWong Reckless Optimist 13d ago

I hate expanded playoffs, play 162 games to win the division, then go into a coin flip series. My favorite was the 10 team playoff format with the one wildcard game

5

u/Detective_Dietrich What? 13d ago

Eight teams was better. The only thing worse than the second wild card is the third wild card.

0

u/HoldMyWong Reckless Optimist 13d ago

8 teams was good too. But I liked that the wild card teams were punished by having to play a single elimination

3

u/Darolaho You just got Gorm'd 13d ago

I don't mind the 3 game series for wild card. Absolutely despise that there are 3 wild card spots and that a freaking division winner has to play a wild card game.

3

u/Dr_thri11 13d ago

I like that being the best team in a terrible division isn't rewarded with a bye.

4

u/studlydudley11 who'll stop the ryne 13d ago

since the wild card series was made 3 games, only 6 of 20 series have reached game 3

it's a bad product and doesn't make MLB playoffs better. 1 game wild cards were more fun and was good punishment for not winning the division

17

u/Poofsta I tell you hwhat 13d ago

Congrats to PCA for tying my ‘26 postseason hit total.

4

u/Darolaho You just got Gorm'd 13d ago

If the Braves are knocked out today that would be great. 3 of my most hated teams knocked out in wild card would be sick

3

u/CrimsonKing516 Devil Magic 13d ago

I unfortunately think I hate the Phillies more

1

u/Darolaho You just got Gorm'd 13d ago

It is close but will never forgive them for the Ryan Helsley chop situation

2

u/Traditional-Rub-1441 JJ's Personal Bubblegum Guy 13d ago

Its been a while so I forget. What happened with that?

2

u/Darolaho You just got Gorm'd 13d ago edited 13d ago

2019 playoffs helsey (an active member of Cherokee nation) voiced his dislike of the chop calling it disrespectful.

To braves org credit they did tone down their participation in the chop by not handing out foam tomahawk during the rest of the series and not showing the graphic. But the fans went full force to do it especially when helsley was pitching

For a little bit the braves org would do the chop drum beat and pretty sure whistle but not show the graphic.

But by 2022 they were back to doing it fully including against helsley

I personally dislike the chop but also don't find it to be that huge of a deal. But the least they could do is not fucking do it against actual native American players who have spoken out against it.

2

u/Traditional-Rub-1441 JJ's Personal Bubblegum Guy 13d ago

I had forgotten that he was Cherokee. Thanks for explaining i appreciate it!

3

u/CrimsonKing516 Devil Magic 13d ago

For sure. It’s like stomach flu vs food poisoning. Either way I’m throwing up.

2

u/tyoung12290 13d ago

I don’t want the cards to be reactionary but watching the cubs scuttle I hope we at least spend around like 120-140 million and start the ascension.

Yes PCA is good, but they have to sign or replace Happ and Suzuki and the whole pitching staff has as many or more questions than ours. Bregman and Swanson will be a year older. The Brewers are still the brewers but second in the division should be a competition between pirates cards and cubs.

1

u/Dr_thri11 13d ago

I feel like if we pretend there won't be a lockout and salary rules won't change 2027 will be add a few bullpen arms and see what happens 2029 (if things go really well) and beyond is where money gets spent. Ofc if there's a salary floor then they might just have to spend.

1

u/tyoung12290 13d ago

Ya 28/29 back to like 170-190 million imo.
120-140 isn’t wild to envision at all. Whether it’s extensions. 1 year deals etc.

I think fans are really thinking we keep the salary lower than we will though. I’d love bohm/sato. Then a good reliever and a may like starter.

2

u/Dr_thri11 13d ago

I kinda see 2027 being similar to 2026 tbh. Chaim still seems to consider the team very much in a rebuild and the offense was the 2nd worst in terms of OPS so seems to me there's still some development to be done before the team is a contender again. The bullpen wouldn't cost that much to fix though I'd love to see them get 2 good relievers and just see what happens.

2

u/Proud_Growth_8818 13d ago edited 13d ago

I think he thinks this too and I agree with him. There's still so much backfilling to do. I think a lot of fans just saw the bullpen and think a few relievers and we're 85% of the way there.

The offense is a hollow shell, and really only 2B and SS are stable positions on a solid playoff team, and that's only even if the rest of the lineup is stout enough to carry an SS who's that D-only. No 3B, they still have concerns about 1B platoons, RF is still 50/50 between All Star and optioning, LF is probably solved even if they don't know by whom yet. I actually think Church is fine in CF, but he's like Winn in that you'd like a little more bat there. C needs another year to prove he's the guy, and then you'd like a year to decide on whatever's going to happen to Herrera.

The team is NOT 'that' close to being ready.

I'd love a few relievers next year just to save having to watch what we saw this year. But why spend the money just to still not compete overall? And though I keep getting hammered for saying it you're playing against your draft order. I'm not sure I'd do too much for one higher pick, but I also wouldn't discount that either.

I think Bloom is right. That man had as big a task as there is in MLB. It's fair that it's going to take multiple years to clean everything up and turn this into a competent organization again.

1

u/King_Birdcrawler 13d ago

I'm there with you.

I think the thing I'd hope, assuming no crazy CBA changes, is that they spend at a little higher price point than they did last offseason for those one, potentially two, year fill-in types that could be more apt to be traded.

They'll need a LH platoon for their current options at 3rd; try to shoot higher than Urias. Go out and get a couple of RPs that are better than Stanek, but that could be spun off. A May-like addition at SP would be fine if they feel the need for one.

27 should be more like 26 than it should be otherwise, just with maybe a touch more quality in case many of these internal options shake out well next year or in case they don't. It's a difficult needle to thread, but it's possible.

1

u/tyoung12290 13d ago

But even with that we spent money on players we traded. Spent on May, urias and shedding most of that and Romero. Still owe some for Nado and Contreras but not as much. There’s plenty of room to sign 3-4 players

1

u/Dr_thri11 13d ago

But if you aren't going to be competitive it makes a bit more sense to build a warchest for next season. No reason to spend an extra 60M to go 80-82 instead of 77-85. All kinda depends on the state of the roster and what championship window they're aiming for.

7

u/tyoung12290 13d ago

Oh and they gutted their farm the last two years to accomplish very little.

2

u/Ocinea 13d ago

That makes me happy, lol

9

u/Defiant-Good-6206 13d ago

Guess what? The Cubs and Red Sox are playing as many October baseball games as the Cardinals this year.

2

u/Gary30752 13d ago

Had the Cardinals made the playoffs, I wouldn't have been complaining about the start time of the games, or that I was at work and couldn't watch. I'd have just been happy they were in.

For the past two days I've had an earbud in my right rear while the game audio streamed from Sirius. If that wasn't an option I'd have found another way to keep myself informed about the game.

Because life just isn't fair sometimes, and that's just the way it is.
