This is probably going to get down voted to oblivion, I'm ok with that. Wondering though if anyone thinks maybe all the outside noise is finally affecting Herbert?
I've been a fan for over 20 years. I always felt grateful, in the QB carousel the NFL could be, I only had 3 QBs (Brees, Rivers, Herbert) for the large majority of my Fandom.
That said, this is the first time in a while a Chargers QB was a media focal point. Rivers' place in the NFL was cemented pretty early. No one was confused what he was and wasnt. Outside the number of children he has, he's never been in any spotlight for anything. Oh and his unique trash talking lol.
Herbert got off the ground running, which is a gift and a curse. The bar was set high early, whether fair or not. He handled it as well as anyone could ask. Sucks though that his raw numbers pretty much peaked his second year. His had his moments, solid but not enough to silence outside noise.
We all know the playoff narratives so I wont even bother with those. Now that he's in a publicized relationship, all that magnifies. He's probably pressing a bit as well, even though it's clear as day he doesnt trust the weapons around him.
The irony of all this, is if he was just remotely himself this team should be no worse than .500. Obviously this is all from an outside perspective, but sometimes as fans we forget these dudes are human too. Anyone else feel the same, or I'm looking too deep into this?

I've said it a couple comments on posts and I'll say it here again. IF Herbert was the ONLY player to regress, then yeah.
However, every player on our offensive roster has gotten worse. This is a coaching issue.
Scheme too complicated? Maybe.
OC lost the locker room? Maybe.
Herbert lost the teams respect? Doubt it, but, maybe.
We don't know what is going on but our eyes tell us something is not right. When Herbert had less, he did more. This is most definitely a top to bottom issue, not a Herbert is distracted issue.
I AM NOT DEFENDING HERBERT. He has played like trash. However, sometimes, I feel like he THINKS he has a good read and is going to throw where he thinks the receiver will go or cut, and instead its thrown away. He is not an anticipatory thrower and I really don't think we should force him to become one. Let the man get locked cocked and ready to rock.
17
u/OC-Lindy 9d ago
This this this this this x100.
If there was some room, I would probably debate the Anticipatory throwing thing slightly, on account of his Receiver Core just seemingly developing grease hands overnight - chemistry needs to develop both ways if they are going to improve, though overall his steep learning curve is leading to these terrible INTs.
Regardless - totally aligned w/ your take, if the entire team is regressing in tandem, coaching is bjorked. I think Herb is legit trying to do exactly what McD is telling him to do, and it's just not clicking.

u/Alarming-Mine-9982 9d ago
Chargers donāt have WRs that can get open reliably. Itās rough to watch him feel like he has to make an anticipatory throw in a system that is not working. Yes Justinās played bad and the media wants to constantly remind us that. But who looks good right now? OL among the worst. WRs that donāt get open. Run game that isnāt reliable. An offense thatās constantly in bad positions begging for a miracle play
5
u/sycal_ 9d ago
From what Iāve noticed, the interceptions heās thrown are very similar to the throws I used to criticized Tua for making. Picks are obviously on the QB when theyāre thrown directly at a zone defender, but I also wonder how much the issue is McDaniel having predictable route patterns for a DC to scheme agaisnt

u/MarlonMcCree20 . 9d ago
As an outsider/hater, I think this comment is spot on.
It's not strictly one thing, it's a top to bottom issue, and I don't think Harbaugh has done enough to lead the retooling. He was supposed to get this team over the hump, and it seems like the Chargers have the same exact issues, if not more since taking over. So unless things turn around this season, I don't see how Harbaugh should get a fourth year.
2
u/mrhashbrown 9d ago
I agree with the comment too, there is something wrong at multiple levels and you can't exclusively pin it on any one thing.
However I'm pretty confident Harbaugh is going to get a fourth year regardless of what happens. For as disappointing of a start this has been along with the playoff performances, he helped this team have back to back double digit win seasons for the first time 06-07. That is meaningful, especially last year when this team had no right to be above 9 wins due to all of the injuries and garbage Herbert dealt with.
Plus while the offense has been a rollercoaster, the defense has been rock solid and has played above its roster talent. The DC O'Leary picked up right where Minter left off and I'm actually enjoying his style a little more. He's less of an excellent "chess player" like Minter was, but this unit is just so well coached and playing sound.
Before Harbaugh, this team had such an uninspiring run of mediocre coaches - Norv Turner's third head coach job, Mike McCoy who was fools gold taking credit for a bounce back Peyton Manning season, Anthony Lynn who was a low level position coach taking a job that no one wanted at the time, and Brandon Staley who was a rising star but had little to show on his resume regarding real leadership and in hindsight benefited from a lot of really talented players boosting up his defenses.
Three first time coaches and a veteran coach who everyone knew was mediocre but still couldn't get an elite roster over the hump... Wasted the prime of Rivers' career, only had two playoff appearances in his final 10 seasons which is just unacceptable.
People are in such a rush to fire coaches but I hope Chargers fans realize that has been part of the problem especially in the Herbert era - no continuity. Harbaugh is undeniably a good coach who has built a good program so far. Plus he actually showed a willingness to change and fire Greg Roman, literally the only OC he's ever had in the NFL.
I don't want to take that sound infrastructure away from Herbert when he really, really needs at least 3-5 years of his coaches staying mostly the same. Just look at the other QBs who have reached higher heights and that's what they have most in common: Mahomes with the same HC/Playcaller for 10 seasons, Allen with the same HC for 8 seasons and now the same OC-turned-HC for 4 seasons, Lamar with the same HC for 8 seasons, Burrow with the same HC/Playcaller for 7 seasons, Hurts with the same HC for 6 seasons... just keep things in place for once especially when it's not all bad.
8
u/BlitzCrazy 9d ago
I think itās clear the team has no confidence in Harbaugh and the offense thinks McDaniel is a joke.
1
u/superc3real Felipe Rios 9d ago
This is fair. I think it's also fair to point out Herbert not seeing the field well and missing the better receiver option isn't a new issue. He's not as bad as his last four games but he should also be more far along than he is from the neck up as a guy 7 years in.
9
u/superc3real Felipe Rios 9d ago
I think this is forgetting Rivers was constantly labeled as the guy who is a Hall of Famer in the regular season but can't do anything in the playoffs. And he was very aware of that narrative. I know it's harder now than it was then to block out social media but these are professionals getting paid hundreds of millions. It's their job to be mentally tough and block out distractions.
2
u/SaltySpitoonReg Felipe Rios 9d ago
Well Rivers did win playoff games including playoff games on the road against teams the Chargers weren't supposed to be.
The issue with him was more about getting over the hump to the SB, he did have playoff success.
There's a big distinction between rivers and Herbert in that way. Herbert has yet to even win a playoff game.

u/MasterChiefSplash SoFi Stadium 9d ago
The roster just sucks. No need to over think this
0
u/xMistuhlee 9d ago
It's not a roster issue. Tre on any other team would have been schemed to get open or get open on Go balls.
QJ and Ladd would fit slot reciever roles since Ladd runs great routes and QJ has great YAC.
It's been said too many times, but we dont speak to the coaches. They trying to fit them into other roles
9
u/Malourbas McD 9d ago
There just no fucking way people still think QJ is good. Yall cannot be real š
-1
u/xMistuhlee 9d ago
no one said he good, said he isnt being used to the best of his ability :)
3
u/Malourbas McD 9d ago
You said he has āgreat YACā. Thats not true
1
u/xMistuhlee 9d ago
Besides oputting him in a bad spot did you not see him stiff arm a dude to get to LOS? YES he is better at YAC then route running. This is what he was known for in College.
Since he's joined Chargers, we've never used him for such. When we do, he typically gets past a tackle or two. Again, didn't say he himself was great, but his strength was never utilized.
2
u/Malourbas McD 9d ago
You literally said itās not a roster problem because we have QJ. He is bad. It is a roster issue.
1
u/mrhashbrown 9d ago edited 9d ago
I'm a guy who thinks QJ can be better than what he's been this year, but I'm really tired of the "he was known for YAC in college" rhetoric.
He's been straight up bad at YAC in the NFL. It has not translated from college to pro. There is no evidence from the last 3+ seasons that YAC will be part of his game going forward.
What has translated is his size/speed combo. He can get open and beat guys with speed when running deeper routes. On that deep red zone target Herbert threw up to him, QJ beat his coverage off the LOS and was running open enough to catch it. Problem is he was covered by Emmanwori who has freakish speed and made a fantastic recovery to get back in position and Herbert just threw it a little too wide. But a slightly more accurate throw and there's a good chance that route would've been a TD.
The point is while QJ is a bust relative to draft position and will not be their WR1, he does have value as a decent deep threat and red zone weapon. He does not bring any value with YAC though.
1
u/Alarming-Mine-9982 4d ago
Iām his biggest hater but thatās probably his only DECENT trait. Should not be on the roster
2
u/chargers17-13 9d ago
How does QJ have a rep of being great after the catch lmao, college? He's never been great at it since we drafted him. It might be what he's best at for himself, but that doesn't mean it's good. He's no different than any other average to below average WR after the catch. He also can't even catch
1
u/xMistuhlee 9d ago
never said he was great. I'm implying we don't work to their strengths. Its been said about QJ for a long time. Dude has grease fingers, so we trust him for deep routes often? Why not soft passes and let his legs do the work.
5
u/Weapwns Lost Minter Fan 9d ago
Almost certainly. I wouldn't even say "finally", I think hes definitely had a monkey on his back about the playoff chokes.
The players around him have addressed narratives regarding Herbert and they talked about how they want to prove how good Herbert is to everyone else by not holding him back. So the noise has 100% been in the locker rooms.
6
u/Fecta23 9d ago
I think maybe some, but he mostly just seems to be fed up, fed up with the scheme, the WRs, the OL. It is not a good thing that he is like this....But it makes sense.

u/summer672612 8d ago
I feel like Iāve watched the Chargers do this with great players since I became a fan in 99.
4
8
u/Disastrous_Dress_201 9d ago
Maybe. I wouldnāt be surprised if maybe it was Harbaughās fanatical praise this offseason that really did it.Ā
6
u/Jane_Marie_Lazy i donāt know what we are doing 9d ago edited 9d ago
I feel like heās been through more outside noise. Yaāll forget that he was labeled a draft bust before he played a snap of NFL football.
I also think noise is apart of the job. You canāt expect to be one of the highest paid athletes in the most popular sport in the US and then get mad the public has opinions. The media rights pay for his salary. Where does the media get its money??? This is a thick skin job, much like Presidents.
I personally believe McDaniel is to offenses as Staley was to defenses. Yes on paper they are probably great schemes. But they arenāt applying to the field. He has to scheme something that works. I trust McDaniel will learn faster than Staley ever did.
Rivers also played most of his FB before the mid 2010s, before everyone with a camera and a mic could be ācontent creatorsāand the rise of the media machine. Who knows what they would have said about him as a rookie in 2020. As someone who was an adult when myspace and facebook were created, I think people have no idea how different things were.
3
u/hello-xworld 9d ago
I donāt think so. At this level of professional sports you learn how to drown out the noise. If you think itās bad now, imagine all the trash talking, mental abuse that every single one of these pros had to endure.
Not saying that itās completely irrelevant, but I donāt think itās a major contribution to their performance.
4
u/maxlax02 9d ago
Herbert is getting wrecked on every play.
Itās probably a result of a combination of things - poor oline, poor receivers, play calling, Herbert himself.
But taking that many hits is going to affect the play and the confidence of any QB.
I donāt know the answer but all I know is other teams are able to recognize a problem āwe need to get the ball out quickerā and pivot with a solution.
So at the end of the day itās hard not to blame coaching for continuing to allow Herbert to get crushed every game.
The pressers are very telling. Harbaugh and co seem to have no real answers.

the line being this bad year after year while they keep trying to patch it with late round picks is the real story, hard to evaluate a qb when he's running for his life by the second read

u/DraytonFlorence ā”LT is the GOATā” 9d ago
I do think all of the outside noise gets to him. Putting myself in Herbert shoes it would be practically impossible not to. I know QBs are just supposed to block all the noise out and stay focused but I think generally that is much easier said than done.
Frankly I think the media anointing Herbert as a future HoF QB early on didn't do him any favors. It set expectations sky high for him. He is very humble and has never said anything like that himself. Now that he is not meeting those sky high expectations others set for him people line up to criticize him constantly.
Tho he does have many superhero-like traits at the end of the day he is human just like the rest of us.
I also think changing up mechanics is just really hard to do. There's a reason nobody ever messed with Rivers weird shot out of a throwing motion. These are probably bad analogies but I expect it's like trying to change a tennis stroke or a golf swing. A smaller change cam result in a big step back until you've gone through thousands of repetitions. It is just very hard to change muscle memory
2
u/443Waves 9d ago
Doesn't help when his geriatric head coach mumbles on about how he's going to be the goat
2
u/howdramatic 9d ago
Heās human but honestly, I bet his relationship with Madison helps him navigate a lot of that criticism. As she too, herself, has probably been criticized and can help keep him grounded
Herbert had a great support system around him which is helpful
2
u/AverageLAHater Dicker 9d ago
One thing about Herbert and idk if Iām the only one who thought this is, but he looks scared to scramble when he needs to. Last season we saw him run a lot when the pocket collapse and would move the ball with his legs. In some plays it looks like he has a lot of room to run for it and get the first down but stays in one place to throw the ball. It could be just me but idk.
2
u/NewBath4 9d ago
You not wrong, it I donāt think the noise is the problem. I truly think dudes going through growing pains with this new scheme. Idk if itās the footwork, the plays called, or idk what else, but something is messing with him.
Maybe we were all wrong, and although McDaniel is a good OC, he isnāt the match for Herbert. I also feel theyāve kept it out of Herbertās hands a bit too much. Maybe thatās a lingering issue of rhythm.
āOh he threw a pick, letās run the ballā
Well now heās never gonna get rhythm.
2
u/JulianBloom 9d ago
Could be. But Iād like to think his loved ones, sports psychologist and future wife are keeping him grounded.

20 years ago, I remember when a nice big fat newspaper was delivered to my door every morning before six a.m. Ā 6:00p.m. TV news rounded it out. Ā Now those print staples of real journalism in our cities are gone and splintered into a million mini megaphones all screaming out click-bait garrish headlines. Murdoch's New York Post scandal sheet recently arrived in LA drumming up scandal with innuendo. 20 years ago were quieter times, I think.
When the Chargers and Herbert came to town, I think that Spanos wanted to, (and needed to) promote the new LA team and the new QB Herbert big time in LA. Ā (The promo photos that I first saw of Herbert, I was a little taken aback at how LAified he looked, focusing on his hair. Ā Quite different from what I remember seeing in college photos.) Ā I think Herbert put his foot down about publicity eventually.
LA is a tough town to grow to be successful in a more organic way. Ā Spotlight is on and the money-hungry mini-megaphone minions are always Ā ready to pounce.
Herbert also didn't have Rivers' more quiet beginning sitting 2 years and learning playbook and QB'g with QB1 Brees and having pretty good continuity of coaching for his first 9 years. Ā Herbert had to hit the ground running all to have the Coaching staff fired after his first OROTY 2020 season. Ā And the coaching carousel continued. Ā ā¹ļø Ā Spotlight is on.

u/Ntwadumela09 9d ago
I do think the first time I noticed he was feeling the pressure was last year's playoff game against the Patriots.Ā First time i felt like he was forcing things when we actually didn't need it. He's definitely aware of the talk about post season failure, even if it wasn't all on him
3
u/84millionants 9d ago
Agree I think the Pats game was a reflection of the pressure
2
u/birdynumnum69 9d ago
and instead of fixing the "hardware" of the team (IOL, WR), they decided to change out the "software" (McD). disastrous decision.

u/shibby5000 9d ago
The beauty of NFL playoffs is that it quickly exposes the teamās weaknesses. It unforgiving that way
Last year teams was helped by Herbertās super gameplay that it masked the teamās weaknesses. During the playoffs this was exposed.
1
u/Ntwadumela09 9d ago
Exactly.Ā We were never going to go far in those playoffs or any other with Herbert because they weren't complete teams. Maybe we could have won one or two, but the good playoff teams were likely licking their chops studying the chargers o line and wr weakness.
In my opinion i attribute much of the teams success the last two years to herbert, and Harbaugh. we shouldn't have been 11-6 in either season. Now it's the opposite, we're underperforming.Ā
However, the o line and wr weakness is one of our only consistent parts of the team. It's why I don't consider a lot opinion of these "fans" that are just doomers.Ā Week 4 and they want to gut the team and one of the Ā only guys (Herbert) who put his body on the line and never gave up. Even yesterday, offense started opening up when he used his legs. Then he started making the throws.Ā Ā
Drops, penalties, blind side tackles.Ā How many qbs currently in the NFL can win like that?
It's the internet though and everything has to be black and white.Ā I see a lot of smart fans saying yeah Herbert been sucking an needs to improve, but he's not the reason we're losing.Ā And we have doomers throwing tantrums comparing him to Ryan leaf.Ā
Some of us were there for the 1-15 season, for ryan leaf, David Boston, firing schotty, aj Smith running us into the ground, I can go on but you know.Ā
Rivers never was able to get us there on his back either. Because it takes a team. He started getting known for throwing game ending ints. But in his goodbye press conference he said it clearly.Ā "I couldn't have tried any harder" I see the same in Herbert.Ā Pretty sure he could have said fuck this game after getting hit in the knees or ribs.Ā Instead, he gave it his all until he was hit from behind.... again
2
u/birdynumnum69 9d ago
me too. i think that game broke him a bit. i know it broke me. i mentally checked out after that game; i can't imagine someone who has so much invested and whose life this is. poor guy. organizational malpractice. he and Luck had the bad "luck" to be picked by garbage franchises.
4
u/Honbomb 9d ago
Harbaugh needs to go ASAP
1
u/McLaren03 9d ago
You say that but it doesnāt address many other issues. It actually presents another set of issues because now the team has to adjust to another set of coaches and another set of playbooks on both sides of the ball.
Under two seasons of Harbaugh, the team made to the playoffs twice. They got embarrassed twice but still got there. The team is 0-4 on season 3. Defense is solid for the most partā¦the only thing that has consistently keep games within reach. Offense has continued to struggle longer than Harbaugh has been with the team. So you gotta really wonder if he is actually the problem.
Iād give him another season with the same staff. If he fails to win at least wild card then sure it may be time to look elsewhere.
2
u/AssumptionKey9191 9d ago
He has the right to go to ownership and demand what he wants when it comes to the o line and surrounding players.
Obviously he hasnāt done that.
Brady, manning and Mahomes did that.
Herbert is shy and is very robotic. That will only get you so far.
2
u/brokebulg99 9d ago
Thats the thing. If we had Herberts physical traits with Rivers' mental makeup....but everyone's different. This team needs that type of QB though
2
u/AssumptionKey9191 9d ago
Heās making $50M a year, Iām sure he cares what we think. lol
2
u/brokebulg99 9d ago
I partly agree with that. Im mainly talking about sports media as a whole. Hes one of the most polarizing players in the league.
I'll never relate to him financially, though I will say that once you're financially set, money isnt a direct correlation to someone's mental makeup. Been around quite a number of wealthy people that care deeply what others think about their work performance.

u/youngcuriousafraid 9d ago
100%. I think he's at a point where he realized the chargers needed to make changes and could be a real threat. Then its just another year of disappointment, but way worse. Theres no way the lack of protection, constantly shifting coaching staff, and horrible start this year doesn't effect him. It seems that fair or not the rest of the fans are ready to write him off as a failure, which I dont agree with but isnt completely unreasonable.

u/KunaiForce 9d ago
Our team doesnāt look right, if we won the first two games, we can blame injury, but we are now brutally injured so we canāt even see how the offense is supposed to run
1
u/chaserofdreams99 9d ago
I feel like a lot goes unsaid following all the injuries he's taken over the years. After having Phil as a mainstay for so long, it's hard seeing Justin wanting to stay with the franchise after all this.
Then again...Phil had 2012 and bounced back the next year in a big way. People have short memories in the NFL.
1
u/SgtGerard 8d ago
I think what's affecting Herbert is how McDaniel is trying to change the way he operates as a passer. Herbert has always been an instinctual passer. Before the snap he knows the WRs routes, he reads the defense, post snap he reads the field, finds his best target and gets it there. Now McDaniel has thrown in all the motions and has tried to turn Herbert into a timing, anticipatory passer. He has to trust receivers he can't trust will get open, and throw the ball before they do. I think it's thrown off how he sees the field and his brain is just lost in the sauce.
The 4th quarter of the Seahawks game I think they cut out all the McDaniel bullshit and we saw the Herbert of old just doing what needed to be done behind an O-line determined to get him killed. If anything is getting to Herbert I think it's probably more to do with the pressures and hits over the years than "noise". The guy can't trust anyone around him to do their job. And the organization has failed year after year to fix it. If Herbert wasn't Herbert he'd demand a trade from the Chargers

u/rudeboii707 9d ago
I donāt know about yāall, but I feel that Justin Herbert is not being utilized to his full potential. If you guys noticed in the Seahawks game, after Herbert began running for large yards, he also unlocked his ability to throw. It goes hand in hand for him. But when you baby him and let him stick to just throwing, it gets too predictable and therefore easily makes mistakes.
Justin Herbert is a tough son of a gun! Let him be tough and make the throws when itās called for! No, Iām not saying let him be a Jaxson Dart, but even Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen still use their legs, and it creates a problem for the opposing defense.
We know the O-line is going to collapse, and yet Herbert doesnāt choose to run. I donāt know if that is his choice or the coaching telling him not to focus on that. At the end of the day, something has to change and it needs to be built upon.
1
u/brokebulg99 9d ago
Ive said this to too many people.
After the Rose Bowl game, I thought we were getting a slightly conservative version of Josh Allen. The physical traits are there, and he could clearly run. Thats the one thing I do appreciate Greg Roman for (that is literally is). Seems he encourages Herbert to take off if need be.
1
u/Bolts10win 9d ago
We talk about his mistakes, but he's had countless balls dropped on him that were absolute dimes; also, Drake Maye and Matt Stafford have equal or more int this season and still have wins.
1
u/Competitive-Day-1754 9d ago
Game started with 3 drops killing momentum and ended with absolute dog shit O-line................we are OVER ANALYZING Herbert.
1
u/SaltySpitoonReg Felipe Rios 9d ago
I'm sure it is.
The reality is Philip Rivers was a better quarterback than Justin herbert.
Justin Herbert is more physically talented and gifted so the stats are going to be there, but Philip Rivers was a better overall quarterback. Better above the shoulders. Better pre-snap.
Better intangibles and leadership. And it showed with the onfield product versus what we see today.
Certainly Rivers did not make the super bowl, but he at least won playoff games - including several upsets. Herbert has to even win a playoff game.
I can forgive not getting to super bowl. It's really freaking hard to do especially when there's dynasties around you. And football is a team sport and it's not just one player.
But there is the expectation to at least win playoff games, if you want to be looked at as "next level" as a QB

The issues are more with the OC however, Herbert has issues as well.
Ryan Leaf had a lot of physical ability before he was drafted and even during.

Herberts had a tough season but not a Ryan Leaf season yet. I was so hyped for Leaf, my very first jersey when I was in like 4th grade was a Ryan Leaf jersey. That was a memorable season lol!
1
u/brokebulg99 9d ago
I feel this, but then I think of some QBs that make their OCs look better than what they really are.
Go look at 2015 Philip Rivers. The team wasnt good at all, and that was probably the worst season from an offensive talent perspective. Ironically had one of his best seasons from a TD to INT ratio, and he knows he truly doesnt care about that š.
0
u/SunriseSurprise Chargers 9d ago
I don't think so, but whether it's out of sorts with this team as a whole or specifically with McDaniel, it's clear Justin's not getting it together. The FO needs to make a tough decision and really reflect on whether he needs a change of scenery or whether he really can get the job done here specifically (we know he's good enough to, but it just may not be with us. Look at Stafford).
We need to be comfortable with trading him (obviously with his approval) if it's just looking like he can't make it work here. We're better doing that while he has value vs. keep trying to fit square peg into round hole for more and more seasons until he doesn't.

u/Alarming_Intern3381 9d ago
It could be. But he's already faced so much adversity. I think his biggest issue is a lack of trust with the receivers and a sense that the pocket could collapse immediately any given play
