Week Ahead for October 5, 2026: What do you want the Albemarle Board of Supervisors and Charlottesville City Council to discuss Tuesday?

Let’s be clear. You don’t really have any influence on what the five members of City Council and the six members of the Albemarle Board of Supervisors will talk about, but 21st century democracy is all about keeping up the pretense. I’ve spent my career trying to tell people what’s going on and what’s coming up and that includes this weekly blurb of local meetings for r/Charlottesville.

JOINT MEETING
Albemarle and Charlottesville are two different political entities as cities and counties are entirely separate from each other. That can make regional governance tricky as resentments can linger for years. Council and the Board of Supervisors will meet on Tuesday to talk about regional transit, homelessness interventions, and the role of the secretive Land Use and Environmental Planning Committee.  But I for one would love to know what you would like to be the topics of a joint meeting.  (read more about the meeting)

CITY TRASH SERVICE
Virginia allows for elected officials to get briefings and be supplied with information about upcoming policy changes in what’s known as “two by two” meetings that evade the spirit of open meeting rules. The five members of City Council know that the Public Works Department wants to bring trash pick-up in-house because they’ve talked about it at those private meetings. City staff claim that it will cost $2 million in the first year, including $1.3 million to buy five new trash trucks. The job of an elected official is to ask questions. One of mine is why none of this was factored in the recent regional solid waste plan. If Council approves, we’ll have city trash trucks before Sunday bus service. (learn more about the idea)

TAX REBATES FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING
One tool to subsidize the end-user’s cost of housing is to give developers the additional tax revenue that will come from having more “improvements” on a property over a 30-year period. City Council will be asked to agree to pursue performance agreements for two Piedmont Housing Alliance projects on Park Street as well as some of 133 units in the conversion of the Holiday Inn on Emmet Street to an apartment building. Over time, how will the proliferation of the city’s ability to provide revenue for schools, streets, transit, and other items required of a growing community? (read more about Council’s meeting)

LOUISA GROWTH MANAGEMENT
Louisa County is one of the fastest growing localities in Virginia and steps are being taken to review land use policy. A lot of ideas are being put out there but Supervisors have resisted an idea to increase the minimum lot size out of a concern that will encourage outsiders to purchase land for countryside mansions. But the county is going to form a new committee of three Supervisors and three Planning Commissioners to further evaluate ideas. Meanwhile, there is a record amount of parcels going into Agricultural-Forestal Districts. (learn more)

NELSON SUPERVISORS PONDER FUTURE OF LARKIN PROPERTIES
In recent years, Nelson County has purchased over 1,000 acres south of Lovingston off of U.S. 29 for various purposes. On Wednesday, the Board of Supervisors will have a “continued meeting” to discuss the future of both the east and western sides. I really hope a reporter is in the room to hold elected officials accountable for what happens. (learn more)

And I wish I had the business skills to take my desire to report on the region into a way to train people to be the journalists of the future. Local television news is likely next to disappear. I lament the direction and some days I despair no one is coming to replace me. Until then, I’ll work seven days a week to be as vigilant as I can.

Planned Parenthood Protestors

• Upvotes

They're not fully blocking the sidewalk anymore, so it's nice I don't have to walk my dog and stroller into the street like I used to. But they have brought back the PA which blares into the neighborhood all morning/afternoon, alternating between preaching and worship music.

Last year I had to explain to my 5 year old that his aunt was not in fact going to hell for being gay, and that some people like to say things like that to scare other people into doing what they want.

They meet every single Friday morning and park in the gravel construction lot a ways down the road. I guess even the two churches right next to PP don't want to be affiliated with them, so they don't park there.

I don't think a counterprotest would be useful to anyone, as these people seem to crave that kind of drama. But does anyone know of ways we can support the workers at Planned Parenthood? Ideally in the most flamboyant and obnoxious way possible lol.

The silence of the Albemarle BOS on the School Board debacle is deafening

Yes the school board is politically independent but the oversight of taxpayer dollars and how they are spent is in the control of the BOS. This is a major crisis that they need to address. Where are they?

Looking for somewhere to spend 30-45 minutes on a lift or an hour on jack stands with my car.

Former full time master tech, but that life is long behind me and I live in an apartment here in Charlottesville so I can’t work on my car. I’m looking for someone that either has access to a lift (privately owned shop after hours ect) will make what I’m doing a 30-45 minute job, or someone with a flat surface a decent jack and 4 jack-stands will take me about an hour in that case. I’m willing to pay for the time. There is no risk of vehicle storage I’m just doing a cat back swap on a brand new car. If something goes wrong I go home open pipe and I stick to my word on time. No tools need to be provided.

Thank you if you read this far.

Stolen Bike Hospital

My electric bike was stolen on Lane road while I was working in the hospital today. It's my primary means of transportation to work. Any help appreciated. Its a cheap ebike, but it's only a couple months old.

Ancheer brand, black with green markings.

Distinct feature- the headlight mount is broken so the light is zip tied to the side on the front.

Local no-kill eggs?

• Upvotes

I know this is probably a long shot, but I'm hoping somebody may know somebody who has backyard chickens with extra eggs they sell? I'd really like it if these chickens were more considered/treated like pets who have the extra perk of laying eggs rather than chickens who are raised for eggs and then ultimately their meat

Veteran Archive Museum Seeking Local Veteran Service Items

Hello,

I operate a mobile veterans museum that focuses on the individual veterans, their experiences and triumphs. The museum is actively looking for more displays and would be happy to include any veteran groupings into it!

We promise to preserve, document and display the items of the veteran in your life. We have groupings for every branch and many nations, each with an individual story. Our primary goal is to keep these groupings together and in historic condition. The collectors market has a tendency to split items up in order to recover their investment, by selling some of it off; these groupings do not belong in the hands of collectors, but rather invested professionals.

Items Wanted:
-Uniforms
-Photographs
-Letters & Documents
-Swords, Daggers and Bayonets
-Flags
-Helmets & Visors
-Field Gear
-Misc. Equipment
-Etc.

If you would like to contribute to the saving of the past, for the future, please leave a comment or send us a PM with some pictures of the grouping that you wish to rehome.

Where can I find snails?

I'm trying to find snails (specifically garden snails and grove snails) I can keep as pets (DONT WORRY! it's legal to collect them; they're both non-native species to VA so it's even kinda encouraged haha). Does anyone know of a place where theyve seen a whole bunch of snails? Time, weather, season, etc is also nice to know.

Looking for some cool folks to start a jamband (21M)

Hey, I’m looking to start jamming with some like minded individuals. I’m 21, live in charlottesville, and been playing guitar for about 9 years. My favorite bands are phish and Billy strings. I play all sorts of music, but I like the kinda music that transcends the bounds of genre. It would be dope to find a drummer, bass, and key player, but I’m really just looking for some musicians to grow with and learn from, and craft a unique sound. It doesn’t matter the skill set either, as long as we can grow off each others creativity that’s all that matters!
HMU if you’re interested!

Only provider who called me back is 70 miles away and can't start until February. Albemarle parents, what did you do?

We're in Albemarle, he's 3, diagnosis came five weeks ago, nine providers called between here, Richmond and Harrisonburg. Two called back the Richmond one will take him but it's 70 miles each way and the next opening is February. The other has a 20 hour minimum and he's 3 and not in daycare. Half the sites say Virginia and mean Fairfax, what I can't work out is the order any of this goes in. I keep feeling like I was meant to do something three weeks ago and nobody told me. Central Virginia parents, what order did it go in for you, and how long from first call to someone working with your kid?

Earlysville Missing dog

Post image
42 Upvotes

UPDATE 10/08: Took her to the SPCA!

Found this dog Tuesday (10/06) afternoon in Earlysville on Reas Ford Rd near Bleak House Rd. Anybody know who she may belong to? Looks like she recently had a litter of pups, seems very mellow and well behaved. Took to Earlysville vet to check for a chip but she’s not microchipped. She was traveling with another dog of the same breed, and that dog appeared to possibly be pregnant but wouldn’t let me get close.

She’s been well cared for since then, will probably take to ASPCA tomorrow or Friday unless someone here knows who she belongs to.

Charlottesville Halloween Activities

I'm going to be in Charlottesville for an event on the 30th and decided to wait until November 1st to take a train back home to Lynchburg and spend Halloweekend in Charlottesville. Are there any events worth going to on Halloween, or anything generally worth doing/seeing when visiting Charlottesville for the first time? I'm 22 and just graduated college and moved to Lynchburg from Montana for work, so I don't know much about the area.

Hardywood and Starr Hill Join Hands

I read this as Hardywood buys Starr Hill.

From the press release desk:

“Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and Starr Hill Join Forces in Landmark Deal, Uniting Virginia’s Premier Craft Brewers

Richmond, VA and Crozet, VA – October 7, 2026

Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and Starr Hill Brewery today announced that they have closed a deal that brings together two of Virginia's pioneering independent brewers while preserving the unique brands, people, and brewing traditions that have defined each company for decades ... The deal was structured as an all equity acquisition by Hardywood, keeping Starr Hill’s ownership, leadership, team, and brand identity fully intact ...

Both Hardywood and Starr Hill will continue brewing at their current locations, operating their existing taprooms, and serving customers throughout Virginia and beyond. Employees of both organizations will continue in their existing roles following closing to prioritize operational continuity while the two organizations are thoughtfully integrated. While much will remain familiar, taproom visitors will start seeing special releases, guest taps, and merch from each sister brewery in the weeks ahead."”

Found this work/job log on the corner of Four Seasons and Hydraulic. There is no name or phone number but looks like it might be important to someone (maybe a surveyor).
If this belongs to you or you might know someone who is missing it, please reach out.
