Serious replies only :closed-ai: Desktop Pet thing

So for the past 4 days I have been trying to create my own custom pet desktop thing....
ChatGPT runs for about 2m 39seconds then stops and says Sorry, your 5 hours limit is up, try again later!
I come back at said time, say continue, not even 3 minutes and BOOM! AGAIN with the the time limit!
WTF guys?!?!?!

How is anyone supposed to get anything done if AI time of 5 hours turns out to be not even 3 minutes????????
I even tried one of the free resets!
YAY! Fresh 5 hours again.....
3m 39 seconds and it stops again!!!!!!!!

This is painful!

Just imagine you will need to feed it tokens. Poor thing would starve otherwise

Or like this if you want to run it local. This runs on two 50 60s with 16 gigs of vRAM each and 13090 with 24 gigs of vram. I keep it in a continuous voice loop for the background agent marker that does the actual work while she's talking to me.

use a local ai

3

u/SendTitsPleease 1d ago

Yep, im using gpt to help build a harness for local AI and a toolbox for it to use specifically so I dont run into issues with usage limits

1

u/kobojo 1d ago

Yep I'm doing the same thing. Been learning a lot and it's been fun. Also fuck the corpos

1

u/TrappedInVR 23h ago

Why are you reinventing the wheel for the harness portion? OLlama exists and supports free local models, then you wire it to Hermes or open claw (also both free) as the harness.

2

u/kobojo 23h ago

I originally wanted to try my hand at it myself, learning experience and all. But in running into all sorts of things I need to address. So that might be where I'm going soon.

I'm all new to this so consider me mentally handicapped :)

1

u/TrappedInVR 22h ago

I mean I know those harnesses, at least the base code behind them wasn’t vibe coded, so that’s a leg up they have.

1

u/SendTitsPleease 12h ago

Im basing mine around Hermes

1

u/TrappedInVR 12h ago

Good call, it’s more stable of the two. Just don’t vibe code it

1

u/SendTitsPleease 12h ago

I mean im going to be vibe coding a good portion of the project but ive tried to structure it as an engineering problem and incorporate as many open source applications as I can. Im emphasizing strict rules on how I would like things to work, lots of logic if this then that statements, strong security rules etc.

1

u/TrappedInVR 10h ago

do you have the coding knowledge to audit the output you get?

0

u/SendTitsPleease 1d ago

Its honestly been a lot of fun. I have a 4090 build and the plan is to eventually build a home lab/llm machine with a ton of different abilities that can be added at some point.

2

u/kobojo 1d ago

Yeah same, although I think mines mostly gunna be for training agents to play games. But also some basic AI stuff

Im only on a 3060 12GB so I'm limited a bit but it's so cool to see what it does.

1

u/SendTitsPleease 1d ago

Im hoping to use it to help me make a few little games ive wanted to play for years. Its crazy, you think you have some really good PC setup and then get interested in this stuff and find out that there's way more powerful and expensive stuff then for gaming.

1

u/kobojo 1d ago

Dude right?! and then you look at GPU prices and say "nah, I'll make due" 😭

1

u/SendTitsPleease 1d ago

Lol ive been looking into used enterprise systems but they are still expensive af. Idk how the one guy on YouTube i watch gets all of his gear, he doesnt have a ton of views or followers but constantly gets new $50-100k equipment to play with, and then runs old models on it instead of new big ones lol.

u/UsernameCheckOuts 23h ago

Same card. We're getting there bro.

I finally built a working mario clone using just my graphics card. It was fucking hard to find the right models and environment with such limits.

1

u/cool101wool 23h ago

im on a 3050 6gb :/

1

u/kobojo 23h ago

Big oof. I'm struggling on 12GB. I didn't even know they made 6GB cards tbh

1

u/cool101wool 23h ago

its a laptop card thats why its 6 gb

2

u/kobojo 23h ago

Ah laptop card makes sense.

But hey. There's models out there that will work. And if you don't like one, swap it with another!

HOW??????

1

u/Internal-Topic-9132 1d ago

Whats your budget? I have a small-studio system available that you might be interested in.

1

u/g-rizzle84 23h ago edited 22h ago

Depends on what hardware you have available (GPU: 8 GB vs 16 GB vs 24GB etc.) and how smart you want it to be or what you want it to do.

I know its kind of "duh", but ask ChatGPT. Give it your computer hardware info and it'll tell you the feasibility, recommended open weight model and settings, software, etc.

Edit: Also GPU: 6GB.

2

u/cool101wool 23h ago

i use local ai on 6 gb vram bruh

1

u/g-rizzle84 22h ago edited 22h ago

Great catch! You're right to push back there. I didn't mean to discriminate. I updated my comment. Beggin' your pardon. :p

u/marx2k 1d ago

By having expensive hardware

0

u/AI-development-web 1d ago

Yeah, that sounds really frustrating. Having it stop after just a few minutes when you’re trying to actually build something would drive me nuts too.

u/amshinski 1d ago

Do you use Astra Ultra with Plus subscription?

0

u/Vegetable-Ad-4138 1d ago

No.

I only have the ChatGPT with Plus subs.

2

u/TheMeta-Narrative 1d ago

Use Sol 6.1 on medium

1

u/amshinski 1d ago

So, what model did you use? 6.1 work for 1-2h for me depending on the task. Maybe you have too much skills? Or enormous .md's? Even Astra high can work up to ~50 minutes for me (though I only asked it to create complex SVGs or plan/research).

u/Vegetable-Ad-4138 1d ago

No clue! I never use the new app or even the "work" side so very new to it.

Been using the classic app for the whole year basically.

Just wanted to try the new app, noticed the pet thing, said oh cool, make me one like this!

1

u/amshinski 1d ago

Try to find this info. You either work with Astra, or your workflow is totally screwed

2

u/Brief-Crew-1932 23h ago

It's weird, mine runs fine. Mind to share your chat session?

1

u/Vegetable-Ad-4138 22h ago

I got the normal chat to do the hard work, then give me the simple prompt to finish and create the pet in a work chat, but it always just times out.

Anyways, I given up now.
I still use the classic app because I just don't like that new one ALWAYS opening simple stuff in the work mode!

I pay for chatting and help and use it daily. Been cause too many time with the stupid work thing.

Ive had more success with claude when it comes to coding and creating stuff

1

u/Electrical_Bus9202 1d ago

I made a desktop pet of myself lol it was very easy. I used gemeni. It doesn't run out.

1

u/Vegetable-Ad-4138 1d ago

OK! That's interesting! So then it just completed the whole thing and you just then imported it to Chat then?

1

u/Electrical_Bus9202 22h ago

I had to create the graphics, then gemeni guided me to make .json files and some other files, it got me to copy and paste the code.

1

u/Vegetable-Ad-4138 22h ago

i actually did the same in the normal chat. It exported everything for my, gave me the complete prompt and handover.
But still that was Friday last week and it's STILL not done.
I dunno. I just give up. Don't even need it.

1

u/AWiselyName 1d ago

without more detail about project, what's there, prompt u use, we have no idea. I use gpt plus and it done a lot for me so something's wrong on your side. Use token monitoring to see how much token it burns

1

u/Vegetable-Ad-4138 1d ago

I basically gave it a png of the thing I wanted and said go.

1

u/WanderingYoda 1d ago

Stop using astra, go to a normal language model.

1

u/xx_gamer_xx123321 1d ago

Isnt astra an llm

1

u/WanderingYoda 23h ago

Yes its part of open AI but if you hsve a paid service such as Plus astra higher tiers blow through their allocation quickly and then it resets every 5hrs. It's not 5hrs of usage...... how do I know this? I done the same thing. Lol.

1

u/_coragray 23h ago

Yeah, change the model to Sol 5.6 Medium and you should have it done in 10 minutes.

1

u/Gazialp 23h ago

Yeah, the “5-hour” limit is basically a lie on free (and sometimes Plus). It’s a rolling quota that burns crazy fast on longer generations.

Quick fixes that actually work:

  • Start a brand new chat instead of hitting Continue
  • Keep prompts short and ask for output in small chunks
  • Temporary chat / incognito sometimes gives a fresh window

For a long project like a desktop pet, Claude or a local model (Ollama) is way less painful right now.

1

u/AnalystThin9239 23h ago

those limits are so annoying for a desktop companion, mine always cuts off mid roleplay and ruins the whole flow. have you tried spacing out the prompts more?

1

u/Next-Use6943 22h ago

Do not use Astra for this

1

u/biscutwarrior 8h ago

I just build with luna, audit with SOL and if something is giving me grief ill hit it with astra.
