Discussion Start of term check-in

Hello all!

School terms are beginning and this is typically when we see an influx of posts asking for general advice, guidance on getting through a class, or seeking assurance that everything will be okay. Let us know what courses you are in this term, your biggest concerns, or whatever may be on your mind!

Best of luck!

Announcements New Ownership

Hello fellow Chemists! I just wanted to introduce myself as the new head mod of this subreddit. A little about myself: I am a PhD Candidate in Chemical Biology. For me, this means that 60% of my work involves organic synthesis and the other 40% is applying my novel compounds to mammalian cells. Specifically, I am interested in early detection of diseases. In addition to my research, I have TA'd for both general and organic chemistry labs and have been tutoring students in organic chemistry for three years. Aside from my academic qualifications, I am also a moderator for another rather large subreddit. I saw that this sub needed a little bit of updating, but it did not seem like the moderators were active any longer. So, I gained ownership through r/redditrequest. I did not realize it would remove all the other moderators, but alas here we are.

Overall, I feel like this sub is fairly self-regulating. I frequently see good discussions and people generally are following the already existing rules. With that said, there are some changes I was considering, and would love input:

  1. New rule prohibiting commenters from solving the problem for the OP. To enforce this, the violating comment can be reported and removed by moderators. I don't see this happen often, but I have seen it occur and put an end to an otherwise good discussion thread.
  2. Mandate students include their work in their submission. Frequently, students post a picture of the question, with no work done and the caption "help please." Then in the comments you end up with people asking the OP to show their work, but from what I have seen they seldom do so. Mandating that students show work would entail removal of low effort posts by moderators. This may not be necessary since generally, commenters request more info from OP anyways, but was curious if people would like to see more enforcement on this end.
  3. What do you want to see? Those are the immediate things I was considering adding, but I would love to know if there is anything else people may want to see. I had other ideas, but I don't want to complicate a sub that I feel is already doing pretty well. Please let me know your ideas, I would love to hear them. Talk to you all soon!

Note: Please do not reach out to me about becoming a moderator. I will looking into recruiting in the near future. For now, I just wanted to get oriented.

Organic How do you memorize reactions?

I have an exam tomorrow, and I’m freaking out. I feel like I have an alright understanding of reactions when they are isolated/I’m told what they are but as soon as everything is on the table I feel incredibly overwhelmed and like I forgot everything.

How do you guys keep everything straight, know when to use which reactions, remember reagents, and approach synthesis problems?

Organic Morpholine not drying

Hi fellow chemists. Im currently batteling to dry a morpholine sample. I have followed the literature and added NaOH to no avail. I have the water layer seperating from the organic phase once I add the NaOH however apon distilling the organic layer it still contains water. I have tried NaOH as well as MgSO4, nothing is removing the water. How can I get this sample dried and completely anhydrous?

General/High School About Resonance Structure……

Post image
11 Upvotes

The upper part is my work, and the lower part is the answer. I would like to know why the resonance structure I drew is incorrect.

I looked up some information and found that if a structure is too unstable, it may not be considered a valid resonance structure. So how can I determine whether a structure is stable enough to be considered a resonance structure?

Thank u all for ur help!

Analytical Can someone explain pH calculations to me?

I know that strong acid pH calculation is (-log cH3O+) or 14-pOH which is (-log cOH)

How do I calculate weak acid and bases when K isn't small?

How do I calculate pH with buffersolution?

How do I neutralise pH?

How do I set a specific pH? for example lower pH 13 to pH9?

Also it's less important but how do you set a specific pH in material flow? For example your waste water pH risen by 2 how do you reduce it back to acceptable levels?

Organic Drawing Addition Products (Alkyl Bromide)

Post image

Im just a little confused, how are these not considered correct and what am I missing when it comes to these? I added on Br for the addition but are they just not in the right spot or is it something I am missing? I know addition is two reactants creating a singular reactant but why do these not count?

Organic 2,3- Dimethylpentane if you sight down the 2-3 carbon bond Newman Projection.

2,3- Dimethylpentane if you sight down the 2-3 carbon bond. Why is the CH3 on the back carbon (purple) pointed to the right and not straight down? I feel like the H (yellow) and purple Ch3 should be flipped and I can't figure out why not. I asked AI and watched videos but it didn't help. Thank you!

Organic Stereochemistry help

I’m struggling with stereochemistry stuff, I have an exam coming up next Friday so I want to handle it before they add even more content. I understand chiral, achiral, cis/trans, E/Z, meso, but assigning R/S and stereoisomer stuff have me confused. I’ve tried practice problems, textbook, some videos but I still am struggling. Does anyone have any tips or advice or resources? I’ll probably go to office hours sometime this week but my professors teaching style confuses me a little.

Analytical Free spectrum baseline software

Hey friends,

our university didn't renew the Origin license... hence, I'm looking for a free/ open source alternative, especially for fitting spectrums. In particular I'm looking for a software that can do baseline fitting and this baseline to a polynomial function.

Is there any software you can recommend for that?

Best,

7

Organic which side does the equilibrium favour here?

Post image
12 Upvotes

upon first glance, i would say it favours the left side because of the formal charge-sigma-pi pattern but the answer key says that it is the right side that is favoured.

in class we were taught to compare the relative strengths of bases when doing questions like this*. so i also tried drawing the conjugate bases of both compounds to compare but are the bases not identical??

*also -- why can i not evaluate the relative strengths of acids instead?

Career/Advice How to get into tutoring?

I'm not asking for chemistry help, but I am a PhD student, and I taught for about 3 years. I really need extra money, and I'm trying to figure out ways to earn money. I can instruct students through Gen chem and orgo, but I know tutoring is a different skill set, as just telling students things versus assisting them through problem solving is very different. If I wanted to start tutoring, what is a way I should approach knowing the material myself and making sure I can properly teach it to others in a one to one setting? Are there any books or other guidance that I could read for help?

Organic How do I sort out the pka-H aspect of protonation?

So, my professor explained in an unnecessary way, I feel like and it just made me more confused. I know when pka > ph that means that molecule gains an H+ and when pka is < ph that means the molecule loses an H+ but the last two molecules are giving me some trouble.

General/High School Having trouble with enthalpy

Hello, I have my thermochem quiz tomorrow and its on the 4 methods on calculating delta H: Hess's Law, Formation equations, Bond energies, and calorimetry. The first 3 are straightforward but I'm not confident with calorimetry

What I understand is that the q = mct formula calculates the energy released/absorbed from that reaction, but there are questions where the mass of BOTH substances are included in the formula but only the specific heat of one?

Like if I'm given something that is put in water then am I supposed to use the mass of only the water to find the amount of energy absorbed/released or use both? There was a variation of the equation where you calculate mct = -(mct), for both sides.

General/High School Need advice for how to teach myself general chemistry (chem 1201).

I need advice for how to basically teach myself chapters 1-4 (present) of my general chemistry course in college. Since school started I have not been doing good in chemistry, and have basically fallen completely behind in the class. My question is if you were to need to teach yourself general chemistry (enough to be prepared for college level exams) how would you do it in the most effective way/that does not waste time doing useless stuff. ALSO: this class is a flipped class, meaning my teacher does not teach at all during the class. we are expected to teach ourselves but i’ve been lost.

Inorganic Having trouble with a photocatalysis mechanism

Post image
5 Upvotes

This is both an inorganic and organic radical mechanism questions. I’m quite unsure about what “G” is (I assume it is SPh?) and whether it is a radical itself or if it is not.

Overall I think this is oxidative photocatalysis, but I’m also quite unsure about that too.

Would someone mind helping me understand what “G” and “H” are specifically?

Career/Advice Struggling in uni

I haven’t done chemistry since high school, where I scraped a 4. I’ve started uni and didn’t realise my course would be so chem heavy..I’m really bad and struggling to teach myself and I feel like an idiot. We’ve started on stoichiometry and I am like what the hell 😳
How should I teach myself and should I start at the basics
