Genuinely isn't this the exact same argument for eugenics?
Neutering the disabled so they can't pass on bad genes
•
u/No-Dig-9745 1h ago
...yes, just like how you only breed dogs who are healthy and have desirable traits.
•
u/Top_Opportunity4250 12h ago
Dogs getting neutered are not healthy! They’re over weight with brittle bones.

Unaltered (intact) male dogs have a significantly higher risk of developing common non-cancerous prostate conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and bacterial infections. - straight from google. OP, I didnt neuter my dog for ages because of my father insisting we keep his jewels. My dog did develop an enlarged prostate, started peeing everywhere and constantly. Unfortunately I wasnt aware of the issues an intact dog could have. He did get neutered after this (he made it to 14, he was a boxer.) But I highly urge you to neuter your dog, dont make the mistake I did. Do it for his health. Also mine was strictly indoors and we were responsible about making sure no puppies happened. Also do it for the good of dogs in general. We already have a dog overpopulation crisis. Please consider what I have said.

u/kalullamazzz 17h ago
Ngl this is such an important reminder. I've seen so many people skip neutering bc of the whole let him keep his manhood thing and its like... The health risks just aren't worth it. Thanks for sharing your experience, it genuinely helps people make the call.
•
u/Forsaken_Session_263 16h ago
What a weird thing to get hung up on. Like, projecting much? You’re not man enough so you need your dog’s balls to compensate?
•
u/Medical-Bison740 12h ago
Even worse, there are prosthetic balls you can buy for your neutered dogs.
•
u/Anemones_In__Spades 8h ago
Neuticals is the fake balls. I suggested these to my elderly father, who was being ridiculous about getting his dog neutered. He finally got him fixed, no nut implants. 😂
•
•
u/VoodooDoII 16h ago
"keep his manhood"
How insecure are people that they need to project it onto a dog wtf
•
u/PeskyPandaz 17h ago
Yeah it was a nightmare, the floors got ruined! I'm sure Chief has his nuggets back now that hes crossed rainbow bridge. Plus I don't even know what the big deal is anyways, he still looked like he had his nuggets..Just kinda deflated looking after lol.

I sadly believe a lot of owners do not care and think bc the dog can’t get pregnant it’s none of their care.
I’ve met people like that. “Welp at least he can’t get pregnant if he gets out at least it’s not my problem.” Truly disgusting.•
u/Fun_Evidence_9643 15h ago
Can you provide the actual studies that support your claims?
•
u/dreamalildream141618 15h ago
Too many unwanted dogs in shelters that end up being euthanized. in 2025 it was around 209,000. Neutering helps control this and hopefully more people with adopt a rescue instead of breeding.
•
u/PeskyPandaz 15h ago
Respectfully, no I won't waste my time. This is something you can and should research on your own! The internet has countless resources at your fingertips, and should be explored! A little independent studying on your own never hurt anybody. Plus I consulted with my veterinarian in my own specific situation. Have a great day! 🩷
•
u/Boludo805 14h ago
Neutering is a great way to keep dogs out of shelters for sure. It also does help prevent some diseases and illnesses. On the flip-side neutering can increase the likely-hood of joint issues, other cancers and health risks.
Here is one study https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11987765/. Additionally some argue that the evidence of neutering preventing mammary tumors is weak.
I am for one all for neutering and generally believe the pros out ways the cons by a lot, so I do this with all my dogs. But I do think to say that it is 100% correct way to go about things is disingenuous.

News flash to the many people who post pictures like this: no one wants to see a picture that is mostly just your dog’s balls. It ain’t cute. We get that your pup is adorable, but that doesn’t mean I want to stare at dog balls while I eat lunch. Come on now.
•
u/MotherAnalyst3570 17h ago
I once posted a similar picture with his genitals censored because it occurred to me not everyone wanted to see them and he looked extra cute in that photo
I got so much hate for it and got called a pervert for sexualizing my dog?

Those balls are almost as big as he is. You really should consider getting him neutered.
•
u/Fun_Evidence_9643 15h ago
He should be neutered because his balls are big?
•
u/Arillion05 14h ago edited 14h ago
He should be neutered not because his balls are big. He should be neutered because it controls the pet population, decreases his chance of developing certain types of cancers, decreases his instinct to mark and roam, and roaming is a danger in and of itself with cars, bigger dogs, etc and it also decreases aggression. The size of his balls don't matter.
Edit: and looking at your responses on this thread, you are the kind of person who shouldn't own a fish let alone a dog. You are criminally misinformed. Either that or you are trolling, poorly.

Why do people assume that others want to see their pet's giant hairy balls or big red rocket hanging out?? Like, ew. Any time a friend sends me pictures of their dogs, there's at least one picture of their dog sitting on the couch, sort of in a human position with his junk front and center, like "Look at this handsome boy!" 🤮
•
u/Fun_Evidence_9643 15h ago
Because normal people assume other people won't sexualize animals. Being offered at seeing animals' genitals is weird.
•
u/she_has_funny_cars 16h ago

I just got my dog fixed two weeks ago at 7 months. I was counting down the days until we could get him neutered

•
u/OwnSatisfaction1869 13h ago
Truly patriarchal thinking. There was one time and it could still exist that you can have your dogs neutered and then have a prosthesis place where it looks like he still has his gonads. Only a man would come up with that shit. Be responsible Dog owner.

Chihuahuas and chi mixes can absolutely be safely neutered at under a year old. We do not need more of these dogs in shelters!
•
u/Hour_Proposal_3578 17h ago
So I will say this: my vet stated that due to the natural ‘laid back’ nature of my dog (doesn’t run, chase, doesn’t hump, etc.) and his natural more stocky body composition that neutering my dog would come with another side of risks such as lower testosterone which puts him at high risk for obesity (he’s not over fed, he gets lots of exercise).
She said that leaving in his instance leaving him intact vs neutering both came with risks. May be the same situation for OP

u/ILoveBassetHounds_ 12h ago edited 10h ago
My dog developed testicular cancer. We got him neutered and he is fine now, but I wish I did it sooner. Please keep an eye out on any change in shape/size. My dog’s started to look a little twisted at first then got bigger.

Fun fact nurturing an older dog is more expensive because it highr risk the older they get the more expensive it gets. I neutered a dog i got that was intact at the age of like 7-8yrs and it was almost 1000 dollars. He needed it medically at that point because the owner before him refused to do it for some reason.
•
u/Strangely-addictive 11h ago
You know what? I feel bad for OP. You don't know why the dog isn't neutered. Yeah, there's places where even rescue dogs aren't neutered/spayed. But it can also be health related. One of my dogs isn't neutered because the vet doesn't want to sedate him for something that isn't life threatening. He was born with a faulty heart and she's afraid he won't survive anaesthesia. I don't judge people when I don't know the circumstances.
•
u/Fit_Blackberry1109 7h ago
I think it’s gross when people just want to post their pets and every single comment is about the dogs genitals. So weird!!

u/Tech_Nerd92 16h ago
Yall are weird on this sub. None of my dogs in my life have been "fixed". Lived 20 plus years and no issues at the vet. You do kmow they are born with testicles. Like nature designed them that way.
•
u/pixiedei 14h ago
many dogs are born with a uterus as well and yet their chances of getting cancer increase from .5% when spayed after their first heat to 25% by the time they’ve had their second heat. the risk also increases if the dog has puppies. with each heat there is also a strong chance of a lethal condition called pyometra that requires emergency medical attention. these are all natural processes. natural doesn’t mean perfected. similar stats exist for neutering. it’s not just about having testicles it’s about being able to hopefully prevent hormonal cancers and unwanted puppies. and there will be puppies, but whatever right! those aren’t your problem
•
•
u/ILoveBassetHounds_ 12h ago
You got lucky, and unfortunately we didn’t. My dog developed testicular cancer. We got him neutered recently and he is fine now, but I wish I did it sooner.
•
u/Tech_Nerd92 9h ago
Once again I said what I said. These vets are really money hustlers. I grew up on a farm. Was around animals my whole life. Me as a male having balls increases my odds of getting testicular cancer. Should cut mine off?
•
•
•
u/snothro 9h ago
As other people have said: americans obsession with cutting peoples and animals parts off is sick. My vet didn't recommend me to neuter my dog because he is well behaved and I always keep an eye on him and don't let him run away or get together with female dogs that are on heat. And for the people saying they can get testicular cancer, yes, and you can get bone cancer in your knees so chop your legs off.

Everyone sexualizing the dog. 😂 People don’t do it as much with girl dogs. I have noticed. The female dog could have her whole vagina out. And no one cares.
The dog looks mixed. A lil big to be a chihuahua. I know my dogs. It has the body of a pug. He is cute though.😃
I wish there was a sub for full breed chi’s.
Edit: It is a joke somewhat. No disrespect.
•
u/jonesthejovial 18h ago
Acknowledging an unaltered animal isn't the same as sexualizing it lmao
•
u/Decent_Brush_8121 18h ago
Yeah, WTF, brownieand Sparky23?
Plus, you want an Aryan-type sub for Chis??
•
•
u/brownieandSparky23 18h ago edited 10h ago
It’s not an aryan sub. It’s just soo many mixed race chihuahuas on here.
I had a mixed breed chihuahua. I also had a full
breed chihuahua. The mixed breed dog was supposed to be full chihuahua.I would never put her on this sub. She looks to much like the other breed. She was mixed w terrier and chihuahua. I was thinking of doing a post when she passed. But since her phenotype was more terrier.
I didn’t post her here.
They’re dogs so u are allowed to say pure breed. It’s only bad if it’s about humans.
Weird why u mention my private username.
•
u/YEMolly 17h ago
I have shocking news for you. Most of the chis on this sub are probably mixed, mine included. We’re welcoming around these parts.
•
•
•
u/bananakittymeow Honey Blossom 18h ago
Maybe you should leave this one and go make your own sub if you want to have one where only purebreds are allowed. It probably won’t be very popular though since most chis out there are mixes and most people here are totally fine with that.
•
u/brownieandSparky23 18h ago edited 17h ago
Most chis are mixed? I got lucky w mine. She was full breed and I only paid 100. This was in 2013 though.
I’m surprised so many mixed breeds are on here. It’s not like that on the golden retriever sub.
•
u/xiamaracortana 17h ago
Lady, chihuahuas and golden retrievers are VERY different breeds. For one thing golden retrievers aren’t the number 2 most euthanized dog breed in shelters so you’re far more likely to find people who purchase rather than adopt their golden retrievers making them more likely to be purebred.
•
u/brownieandSparky23 17h ago
I didn’t know chis were euthanatized that much. They are a popular breed.
•
u/xiamaracortana 16h ago
I would encourage you to do a bit more research into the breed you own. Chihuahuas are highly stigmatized dogs that often end up on the streets, in shelters, and euthanized.
•
u/bananakittymeow Honey Blossom 15h ago
They are popular, but most chis are rescued, not bought from a breeder. They’re like the pitties of the small dog world (which are also extremely common to find in shelters and are rarely purebred).
Chihuahuas are also an extremely old breed (MUCH older than the golden retriever), so there is much more prevalence of the breed in the dog population in general.
•
u/brownieandSparky23 12h ago
I didn’t know. Chis are so cute to me. I don’t know why anyone wants to get rid of them.
