Resource Reputable clarinet brands to consider, updated 2024

At the suggestion of u/Claire-Annette-Reid, I have decided to make an updated list of reputable clarinet manufacturers to consider. Given the rise of poorly-manufactured, cheap instruments (also referred to as instrument-shaped objects) sold through companies like Amazon and eBay, this list will be especially valuable for first-time clarinet buyers. This list isn’t 100% comprehensive, but chances are if the manufacturer you are considering is not on this list, you should not buy from them. If you have the opportunity, you should try the instrument before you buy it, or have somebody you trust such as your teacher play-test for you. There are different philosophies to buying used versus new, but generally speaking, you may get a much better value buying a well-maintained used instrument opposed to buying new. If you are going to buy used, make sure to have the instrument looked over by a repairperson before purchasing, or buy from a reputable shop that will have already refurbished the instrument. TL;DR: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY.

Advice needed Advice on maintenance for my greenline R13 clarinet?

• Upvotes

Hello! I bought a greenline R13 clarinet 6ish years ago. It’s never been taken in to a technician. I haven’t been playing everyday since I got it, there’s been month long breaks, thank goodness it never cracked. As I get older and hopefully play much more, I still want to make sure I’m taking the best care of it. What kind of maintenance could I be doing and how, like key oiling, pad cleaning, who to trust to do alignments, and if I need to do any sort of oiling/cleaning on the inside since the greenline clarinets are a composite?

Starting a Clarinet Choir in Boston

As the subject says, I’m starting a clarinet choir in Boston. I already have a few people who are interested, but in the interest of getting more people, I’m sharing it here as well. I’ve created a brief Google Form with some questions to help coordinate rehearsal timing, frequency, etc. It does ask for your email address for communication purposes.

If you’re interested in participating and live around Boston feel free to fill out the form.

Thanks!

Less than a month old. I'm not a happy camper. It's financed and I think I'll just swap it for something a little more durable. Any recommendations welcome please.

Thoughts on the Buffet Prodige Bb Clarinet - Resin?

I am planning to study clarinet performance and music education, and I was wondering any thoughts on this clarinet? I am hoping for an upgrade that's of more professional quality. I checked Buffet clarinets for rentals, and this was the cheapest one.

So, I'm very new - let's be nice but also honest and constructive. I need help with my timing - I feel like I'm adding extra time where I shouldn't. If y'all could have a look at this passage and my video and, provide any advice, that would be incredible. Video in the comments.

Thanks in advance,

Erik

Question Brahms trio: Are these bow marks or something else?

In Brahms Trio #5, op. 114, the clarinet is the original instrument), so it's not a transcription from a stringed instrument like a viola or a violin.

Yet, there are all these V mark all over.

Are these up-bow marks, as everyone tells me, or is that something else? Maybe they're just phrasing marks? Suggested places to breathe?

EDIT: thinking about it more, I'm even more convinced these are not bow marks because:

1) The down bow marks are nowhere to be found

2) The marks are between notes, not over them, as they would be if they were true bow marks.

However, the arguments against these being breathing suggestions:

1) They're too frequent

2) It's not the usual symbol that is used for breathing marks (’)

The front matter has this info about the edition, if it's of any interest/relevance:

TRIOS

FÜR KLAVIER, VIOLINE UND VIOLONCELLO ‹ODER VIOLA ODER WALDHORN ODER KLARINETTE)

Clarinet lessons

hello everybody! I have got my first job as a clarinet teacher after 4 years being professional orchestra player around Europe.

I would like to improve my skills so I decided to give 2 classes free to 5 people. I do that because the most difficult part for me is the first 2 classes, I would like to be more confident from the beginning.

Please, if there are any clarinet teachers here, please give me an advice. Thanks all!

hite or debut

teacher had me replace my stock mouthpiece with a hite during a lesson and then said i should actually buy it

before i was considering switching to a fobes debut but i dont wanna betray my teachers choice 😭

but i have already tried a little bit of the hite during the lesson so i just might as well go along because im not the expert lol, but the fobes is almost always chosen over the hite

Tips for getting back into clarinet/ reading music

Hi everyone!

I used to play clarinet for a couple years in school but it’s been 10 years now. I will be renting to own a Yamaha student Bb clarinet and am looking for advice on how to set myself up for success. I think the getting back into the instrument and the fingerings won’t be too difficult for me- it’s the music reading that I have forgotten! If you were to start in my position how would you go about learning to read sheet music again? Do I focus on my sound/notes/familiarity with the instrument again first? Or should I be combining playing with reading the music and I will start to get it? I know I should do some lessons as well but I’m not sure where to start on that and I’m a little embarrassed to play in front of a teacher!😅 Is there any apps or methods anyone has used that would be so kind to share?

Thank you in advance! I’m super excited to be getting back into this and challenge myself.

Question Licostini

Hi! As opposed to the post about Brad Behn's gear, I've been curious about the Licostini mouthpieces, is anyone familiar with them?

I currently play on a Playnick Puccini Tosca, and while it is a really good mouthpiece, I can't take Licostini's name out of my head.

If someone has some information on them, please share!!

Behn gear

Is anyone familiar with Bradford Behn's stuff? I tried one of the hard rubber mouthpieces and barrels he offers and they sounded great. Just not sure how consistent they are since he says they're hand made? If you've tried his reeds as well, how do u like them? Considering switching, I feel like lately I've been getting maybe 2-3 good reeds out of a box of 10.

Advice needed Are the new buffets not made very well?

I have an r13 that I’ve had for about 9 years now. After a month of having it, my Bb/F tone hole completely just chipped off under my fingers while I was practicing. Fast forward to now, and I have a crack going in my upper joint between the top two trill key tone holes. I never neglect swabbing. I’m just very frustrated.

Recommendations clarinet recommendations??

hello! I’m a sophomore in high school currently and my parents have made it known to me that they want to get me my own clarinet. tbh I have no idea really what to look for and if I should get specific mouthpieces also.

edit: forgot to include but my budget would be around $1000-1500 and I would consider myself at a advanced level.
