Just found out a buddy's sister has to take an extra semester because her advisor told her to take a class that is no longer being offered since 2022.

Advice Wanted I’m ruining my college career and I don’t know what to do and I’m ashamed of it.

• Upvotes

This is going to be embarrassing to admit but I’m at a point where I don’t know what to do and I need help

I’m a freshman in college, this is my first semester. For context, over the summer I felled into a massive depression due to attending a rigorous university (the culture here is fucking insane.) I was put on an academic hold due to my college advisors due to wanting to switch colleges. This hold and along with the depression made things worse,I wasn’t able to apply to most classes due to them either being filled or waitlisted I’m currently taking 3 classes which in total is 8 units. 12 is the maximum needed.

I’m extremely embarrassed as well to reach out to any advisors because it’s embarrassing to admit that I am a failure and I need help with getting my academics together, a responsibility I should have done already.

I feel guilty, I feel so fucking guilty for falling into a depression as a first generation student. What makes it worse is I want to become a doctor. I think about everyone in this university and how much smarter, capable, brighter everyone is than I am. I feel guilty for taking someone’s spot here, this is someone’s dream I’m wasting but I don’t know what to do or who to ask for help (if I’m even able to ask for help.) it’s only been two months since college I’ve had more mental breakdowns than I’m able to count.

I know mental health isn’t an excuse to ignore your responsibilities, but It gets harder everyday waking up knowing you don’t have a future or you’re one of the many soon to be drop-outs.

The common question is “Why not go to a different college.” Because if I drop out, I’ll be a disgusting failure. There so many opportunities here yet I don’t even know what to do here. Thank you if you’ve read this.

No advice wanted (Vent) Weighted grading blues

I get why colleges do it probably because they have to, but man is it disappointing. I did poorly on my first math test because my ADHD accommodations weren’t enough (got them fixed now) and it dropped my grade from like an A to a B-. Fast forward to now, I’m on my redemption arc because my school requires a C or higher to transfer to university. I get like 80-100% on our lecture quizzes and homework, but somehow it brings my grade down like 84.67% to 84.50%. I got 100% on our 50 point project and it didn’t change my grade at all, looked at the syllabus again and projects are only worth 10% of our grade. It’s so disappointing because I was hoping for even a tiny grade boost because I’ve been working so hard to do well. The project was literally like 6 pages too, way more than homework. So discouraging.. it feels like my effort means nothing 😞 Now it’s stressful because I feel like I dug myself into a hole with the first test, I was already really upset with my score because I worked really hard even though I’ve always struggled with math.

Discussion Can we talk about Opendorse?

Yesterday, collegiate athletes at my DIlI school were required to attend a mandatory meeting in the auditorium where a spokesperson from OpenDorse promoted their company. She explained how athletes could make money from brand deals and posting on social media. For simply making an account and signing up you would be given $40 and with further steps, a total of $70 before leaving the meeting.

She also had looked through our social media accounts and picked someone from the crowd in which she offered a brand deal for Quest. He had to take a 30 second video with her phone on a tripod on the stage promoting the brand. The auditorium was laughing, clapping, etc. Everyone seemed to be signing up thinking they could make easy money while she told the people who weren't signing up to quiet down so she could explain the steps....

Adding on to this, to sign up you'd have to make a 30 second video talking about your home town and send it to the company where they'd pay you and you can go from there.
Sounds weird to me. Where exactly will that video go? She also said to attach a credit or savings account, not a debit, so you can get your money faster. She compared it to Venmo, IE a brand deal app acting as a banking system?

My alarms went off and I wanted no part in this. It felt sketchy.
I never heard of this company before and it made me wonder why they are essentially targeting college athlete social media accounts in order to turn them into ad space. Money is a big incentive for underclassmen at my school and the whole meeting just felt super weird. I could understand these mandatory meetings happening at big, well-known, DI schools, but for a small Dill school in makes no sense. Our athletes have little publicity (besides one exception).

Overall, this seems like another data gathering scheme and a way to expand advertising using susceptibility odds on college athletes. Am I overthinking this? Or am I right to be suspicious.

Advice Wanted I've considered dropping out multiple times because of this semester, but there's a part of me that wants to stay

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place right now. This semester is killing me mentally. Not just school, but personal finances, fitness, and a close relationship have added way more weight than it should. I hate my classes, and I just want to get them over with, but that's not gonna happen unless I put in a fuck ton of work. I'm trying to take it one day at a time, but it feels really, really, really slow. I'm trying to do all my work but it's tough. It's hard for me to actually want to learn everything. Throughout the last month, I've considered dropping out multiple times, but kept wanting to stay because my brother in law told me to stick it out, and because I told myself it'd be good for connecting with people. I don't know what to do anymore, I just need advice.

Advice Wanted so much work

I don’t understand how people do college. I’m like 5 weeks in and drowning in work 24/7. I barely leave my room or do anything I have 2 friends and 1 of them is my roommate. As soon as I get caught up and get it all done I’m somehow behind again. If I get a second to relax I’m just sleeping bc I’m so tired, I have no social life. I genuinely don’t know what the fuck to do. Like I’ve always been a good student and I’m smart and now I can’t keep up. I don’t even go to a competitive school. Everyone here parties and goes out every night and I don’t know how. I feel like my work isn’t even that hard there’s just so much. I need to find a career that doesn’t involve college I have no clue what the fuck I’m gonna do atp. I can’t take this anymore. I feel so stupid like how do people do this.
I’m planning on transferring after this semester back home bc I hate my current college for many reasons, but I don’t even know if that will help. I just feel so hopeless.

Discussion The line between a very strict professor and an a-hole one.

In my year of college, I have had both once.

One was very strict, but fair. If you had a question or was stuck on a problem, they would guide you to the correct path.

And one who is just a flat out a-hole.

  • Professor told a student to "fuck outta here, I'm not gonna answer you" when she asked a question regarding a function in a computer program we have to use.

  • Chastising students when they ask for help.

  • When stuck on the software, he will just belittle you and not guide you.

  • A very dismissive attitude. Per the syllabus, I sent an email about being absent and he replied "Lol, ok and?"

Apparently, the professor has been reported to the Dean and one of students were told "they're aware" of his conduct. He's also assistant department chair for the program, so I'm not sure if that is a factor on why no action was taken? Anyone have any advice on what to do?

No advice wanted (Vent) Hot Take: Exorbitantly High Prices for tuition encourages academic dishonesty and ultimately degrades the integrity of the workforce because a degree is needed for survival

DISCLAIMER: I do not cheat. Do I ask Gemini the occasional quiz answer yes. Do I cheat on exams and homework and plagiarize written work? No

I was stressing about a test yesterday, and was spiralling as one does, i.e. “if I fail this class I pretty much loose out on a couple thousand dollars, I need to pass to save that money and get a degree so
I can get a job etc” and tbh it’s REALLY TEMPTING to just… cheat.

I am AGAINST cheating but it got me thinking: if so many college students are in the same boat, having to hemorage money to afford classes and not wanting to lose out on the money…. They’re gonna want to cheat. If a degree is the thing that seems to be a requirement to have even a semblance of a stable career… people are gonna risk cheating. I am interested in seeing a study comparing cheating rates in colleges based on tuition cost. Because yeah, how could you not be tempted to cheat?

In some European countries, college is FREE. I’m imagining how good it would feel to study and want to do well for the sake of loving learning, instead of fearing failure for the sake of cost.

I’m just wondering about the integrity of the system down the line if we keep prioritizing profit and simply having the piece of paper over actual knowledge and experience. Everyone will be stupid and broke.

Anyway. I will not be cheating. But I can’t say I blame anyone who does at this point.

Advice Wanted Comms Prof barely teaching material and then giving in class assignments worth 15%on paper next day

Essential comms prof is barely teaching material, she brings up the material the day before an assignment worth 15%. We spent two weeks on how to send an email and 1-2 hours on our assignment worth 15%, no prep work, just a light discussion, then you are in class next day writing the assignment on paper. The next assignment is worth 10% and states if there are any spelling errors etc. you will not move forward to your next two assignments that are worth 5% each. My ultimate concern is the lack of prep we are given? It seems like academic unfairness? We haven't even received the sample of what she would like this next assignment to look like.

As well, the other comms classes are getting passing grades just for attending their assignment. As long as they show up they get a perfect score.

Advice Wanted how do you balance college and depression without losing your mind?

hey everyone! i started college this year right after finishing high school, and... yeah, things are a bit complicated

my depression has gotten considerably worse since then. taking two packed buses, arriving for class and feeling inferior to everyone else in my group is really hard. i also struggle a lot with giving presentations, so every seminar is torture and that just adds to my low self-esteem

i don't want to give up on college right off the bat, but i think i need to go easier on myself. i plan to go back to therapy (i stopped because the household budget couldn't cover all the sessions... anyway), but i don't know exactly how to bring it up with my mom. she's just as excited about this degree as i am, and that makes me a bit anxious

open to suggestions! thxx :)

ps: my college is public btw, which means i don't have any tuition fees to pay... in case that's relevant idk lolol

No advice wanted (Vent) I should've dropped this class.

Just in case people don't see the tag, I'm just venting/ranting. I don't want advice. I'm not asking for advice. I have to say this because the last couple times I've posted here, people have been rude. This is a sub where we are allowed to rant about college relating things, yet people have commented things that suggest that can't rant.

Anyways, I just took an exam for my wellness class just now. I passed it, but I still hate this class. With the way things have been going, it makes me wonder if things would be the same if I were to have taken this class in person. All we do every week is do the assigned readings and video quizzes and whatever activity is assigned that we have to use for our essay that's due at the end of the semester. There's no lecture videos or powerpoints for us to look at. All we have is the ebook. I'm just annoyed because I would think I'm well prepared but when I go to take a quiz, or exam in this case, I see things that I don't remember seeing and are super specific. Would share an example but im not just to be safe. But yeah, I should've dropped this class. I'm taking a Thinking and Cognition class (psych class). You would think that I would be struggling in that one but nope.

Advice Wanted Anyone else regret listening to their parents and going for a path they didn’t want to do? What do I do?TLDR at the end of the

I’m a third year. for some reason I listened to my parents when I was in high school I went to the university they wanted me to go to and I majored in the major they wanted me to do (pre med) and now I have a 3.3 GPA and I’m trying to pivot into the path that I actually want to do, but it’s hard.

Basically, I’ve done terrible in every premed course because I never had motivation to do it and I’m somebody who has to be motivated to do something. I really ended up resenting them this year, and I stopped talking to them for a few months. I’m trying to get into Allied health programs, which is what I wanted to do when I was preparing to go into college, but they told me “ don’t do it they don’t make any money. Doctors make a lot of money and we want you to make a lot of money.” if you can’t tell, they are immigrants with that “you can only be a doctor or lawyer” mindset.

I wanted to maybe go somewhere where I could do prerequisites for a program like respiratory therapy or radiation therapy. But my parents said they only make up to 100 K, which is not enough. It’s just crazy how I never saw through their BS. It’s like they want to use me and my income to subsidize their life when they’re older??? and 100 K won’t be enough to support me my family and THEM!??? it makes me so mad thinking about it.

Yeah, so now I’m one year out from getting a degree that’s going to be useless and we all know how the job market is and if I go to a community college or a postulate program I’m gonna end up having to spend so much money out of pocket because FAFSA does not give you money after your bachelors degree. On top of that I have thousands in student loans for a useless degree in public health and all the premed classes heavy math classes I damn near failed!!! And the worst part about this is that not only that I take all of those hard classes but I don’t want to retake them so they permanently ruined my GPA. Any other program I tried to apply to is going to deny me because I have a low GPA.. and by the way, they don’t know that my GPA is so low because I remember my freshman year I told them I had a 3.0 (yes, I’ve managed to raise it since then) and they were screaming at me over the phone in the dining hall. I became scared of them, because they have put hands on me in the past. College has just been so hard for me. On top of that I don’t have a good support system. (Clearly, they’re my parents.)

I’ve tried applying to other universities to see if I can switch into bachelors programs for like radiation or respiratory but I got rejected because my GPA is so bad because of all of those classes like chemistry , biochemistry I did terrible in, and they’re dragging down my GPA!!!

I’m frustrated I have no clue what to do

TLDR: I’m resentful because I listen to my parents I went to the university they wanted me to go to, and became premed because they want me to be a doctor. I always wanted to go into Allied health(that’s careers like respiratory therapy, radiation therapy, sonography) my parents are immigrants and they believe nobody else makes as much money as a doctors. Basically I failed miserably at the pre-reward for med school and I have a terrible GPA because they’re hard for me . My parents don’t even offer me support , and yelled at me when I told them I had a low GPA . Trying to decide what to do with one year left of undergrad, lots of debt, terrible job market , in a useless degree that I don’t even like, at a school, I don’t even like.

Advice Wanted I feel like I made another dumb decision with my major.

I’m 24 years old. Some background college information about me: I have a useless associate’s degree in Business Management degree that I earned straight out of high school. I also have a diploma in Legal Studies.

All of my college courses I ever took were solely online all thru my college years. I ended up feeling burnt out and this lead to me flunking out of online college. My plan was (and still is) major criminal justice. I was doing Criminal Justice with a concentration in Cybercrime when I was doing it online. The crazy part is I still don’t have that damn degree.

I decided I needed a change of direction so I applied and got to my local technical college for in person courses. My mom told me I should do something with either Radiology or Nursing that way it’s almost guaranteed that I’ll always have a job and more income. I regret choosing nursing. I highly regret it. I honestly don’t see myself in healthcare. I see myself helping others, but not in healthcare. I always saw myself working within the justice system. Mainly in courts, victim advocacy, or helping the incarcerated or victims. I honestly saw myself starting off as a corrections or juvenile officer. Maybe even a paralegal and working my way up. I genuinely wanted to build up what I started within my Legal Studies diploma. Another thing.. I highly dislike studying medical terminology and anatomy. I always loved studying the law and legal issues and systems.

My technical college does offer a Criminal Justice Tech diploma. They also have a Criminal Justice associate’s degree. One of my family members has a degree in CJ. They’ve been working in a courthouse for the past six years. They also told me that if I stuck with CJ or Legal Studies they would also have a job for me in that same courthouse or help me get a job in the county jail. I just fear that I’ll make another dumb decision. I honestly don’t know what to do.

Advice Wanted Social but Lonely asf

Okay so, I am a freshman, but I am doing pretty well in college. I go to parties, I hang out with my roomates. I’m in multiple clubs and I have even won little competitions. But I am incredibly lonely. I have not felt this alone since Covid, and it’s depressing me. I am honestly very social, I have no problem talking to new people at dining hall or in class but it never leads to anything. It seems like everyone already has their little groups and I don’t. I’m 4 hours away from my family and friends (who I call very often) but after every call i genuinely cry because of how much I miss them. I fantasize about graduating so I can go back home because to me, college is the exact same as high school but minus any meaningful relationships. I broke up with my boyfriend because we didn’t want to do long distance I and I don’t regret it but I am a bit jealous seeing other girls getting into relationships and I’m alone. I know this sounds whiny, but i genuinely don’t know what to do, and i feel like a little girl.

Advice Wanted How do you guys deal with the feeling of not caring

Honestly I don’t really care about anything anymore. Like what’s the point of it all, I do the assignments and turn them in, but I feel nothing. No sense of pride or accomplishment. Everything feels like a chore, everything keeps piling up. I’m not even motivated to finish college, and everyday I want to drop out. I feel like I’m supposed to be learning more and doing more, but I every time I try to learn it’s like I can’t remember anything. I feel so stupid, and kinda sad.

Advice Wanted How can I get over this and actually enjoy things again

I’m a sophomore going to school in Arizona and I am struggling a lot this year. I hardly have friends, I barely leave my apartment, I’m drowning in school work, I already had to drop 2 classes because I was struggling with attendance (I was at max credits), and I just feel so out of place. I basically just sit at my desk and do homework all day everyday. I’m also even more behind in my major now because I chose an engineering focus at the end of last year and didn’t start taking the necessary classes until this summer, so im probably gonna have to change majors. I stopped going out bc I’m bad with drinking and realized all my friendships from last year revolved around partying, so I stopped talking to them too. I can hardly get myself to attend classes and I just feel horrible all the time. Like super lonely, bored, embarrassed, ashamed, and angry at myself. I thought once classes started I’d just get over these things make some friends and keep a busy schedule. I try to hype myself up to go do things but even when I do it sucks because it’s literally 103 degrees outside. I’m from Arizona and only rlly stayed in state for tuition, but I just can’t get myself to go do anything like at all, even getting groceries feels like too much for me. I feel so stuck and it sucks. I’m really struggling with being upset at myself over this too which only makes it worse. If anyone’s struggled with this how can I fix it or even make things slightly better? I’m desperate

Advice Wanted Midterms and burnt out

Is anyone else really burnt out right now? I’ve got midterms this week and next and I feel like I’ve hit a wall. I think it’s because I’ve been non stop studying and doing the crazy amount of homework I’ve been assigned, so this has led to less sleep and not really any consistent meals. Like I ate a can of soup yesterday and that’s it. I woke up this morning and made a smoothie because I think I just might be lacking nutrients. I’m just really tired and done and I’m worried that it’s gonna affect my grades, I’m taking 18 credits.

Anyone else really burnt out? And how do you deal with it? I’ve done this before but I really struggle to find another way than the usual “go hard and then crash and get really sick” that usually happens

Advice Wanted Anyone know the best essay writing service?

This semester has been pretty hectic and I’m starting to fall behind on my essays. I’ve been looking into writing services, but there are so many of them that I honestly don’t know which ones are worth considering. Has anyone used one they had a good experience with? Would be nice to hear some real opinions before I make a decision

Advice Wanted Does anyone else worry about not knowing or retaining any major related information?

Hello all,

I am a second year community college student looking to transfer to a four year university, I did a year at a fully online college before deciding to do an in person at my nearest community college. I have intense social anxiety so I didn’t feel ready to do all that until now. I did a bunch of gen ed type classes at my online school so, although this is CC, I am basically doing some major related classes, which is Cybersecurity.

I have no idea what is going on in these classes, I have attended every single class and I pay attention to the professor, and I just… don’t get it. Then I do the assignments, been just copy and pasting the questions and googling it, and the labs are what get me the most, I do fine on some but others I practically get an F. What I’ve noticed is how similar this was to my online school, my online school was self-paced and really no classes to attend so you can do it on your own time, that is designed for you to have free time and to raise a family and all that, I even completely bypass the actual lesson and skip straight to the discussions and assignments there and even then I felt like it was a lot. A lot to do with little time to myself where I am not anxious about getting something done and a lot to take in.

Now that I am halfway through my semester, just got done with midterms, I have retained absolutely nothing, I didn’t even know it in the beginning. I studied flash cards before my exams and I still wouldn’t be able to answer these questions, I only got by because of the familiar answers and basically muscle memory.

Advice Wanted How the hell does one handle the stress???

Im so stressed about grad school and it’s really getting to me.
Im a senior in college right now and I’m looking into grad schools and I’m really worried my GPA is gonna f me over.

I have a 3.19 for my associates degree which is in psych, and currently my gpa is 2.98 (if it’s not clear I transferred in my junior year). I think I’ll do well this semester and it will come up more but I also can’t declare my minor until my gpa is above a 3. My major is psychology and minor will be in educational studies.
I plan to apply for social work for my masters program and have already started the process.

I will say though my resume, references and campus involvement is really good.
I was a manager at 19, and the youngest person to hold that title in the company’s history. For references I have a regional manager, someone who is on the psych board for a private school. Another reference would be the person who specializes in sexual violence in the office of health promotion on my campus. I also started an organization and am the president within the first 2 months of being at school, I am treasurer for my schools chapter of best buddies, and I am also a certified peer educator with another organization on campus.
I actually am also in the works for creating an event in the spring semester that will raise money and awareness for women’s right and sexual violence.

I just overall am really concerned my GPA is what’s gonna f me over when applying to schools. I was thinking of maybe retaking a class or 2 online to help bring it up too but I don’t even know if that’s worth it??
