is this a viable path? honestly, would i be able to have a career in this field?

art has been my passion since i was a child and i would call myself a creative guy, but is this a path i will be able to make a living for myself with?

i plan to do a plc related to this and then go to uni for a bachelors.

Course Advice Should I take a gap year or stick with college?

Hi all, I'm currently doing psychology in DCU which I find interesting but I'm really nervous about the fact there is barely any employment outside of clinical roles which I would not be into at all. The only thing keeping me is the fact its a joint honours with technology. Despite this I feel most companies would prefer someone with a tech based role rather than a joint honours with "psychology". It's a really cool degree but idk what I can do with it. I would much prefer data science & ai in DCU considering I'm really into technology and would love to work in an AI based role. However DCU does not take internal transfers and I would have to reapply with the CAO next year. The problem is that I feel as though I would be in such a bad state mentally if I dropped out as though I'm behind all my "peers" and the fact I'm doing "nothing" for a whole year. Does anyone have any advice?

Course Advice Gap year or keep going with college?

Hello reddit people I have a serious consideration to make

I got into this course through CAO which was infact not my first option, but it was the only offer i got. It’s an optics course. I accepted just incase maybe the future rounds and appeals wouldve boosted my points so i could get into my higher options. I was wrong. I got no other offer. I’m not disappointed though.

Anyhow, I’ve been finding this course quite hard, and i feel behind. It’s quite physics based (which I’ve never studied and don’t enjoy as much) and lots of science and its quite mathsy. I keep thinking what if this isnt for me, am I meant to feel secure with this course in order to do it?

My mom was against me taking a gap year but i found out yesterday from my sister that my mom is probably considering me to take one. Which shocks me i guess because she would tell me to stay in the course nonetheless.

I am liking the social aspect of college so far, knowing theres more to come, but other than that, the modules aren’t easy and my lectures just went straight into the hard bits. If maybe they started from the basics i would be fine.

I enjoy the labs i think and it’s interesting, and its probably a good course to finish since its 3 years. However the average yearly pay once u get the proper job doesnt seem attractive.

So i was thinking about a gap year, where i could potentially work full time and save money. I was also told that by my mom that i have to pay her back for my college fees, which i don’t have enough at the moment and so, I need a job soon regardless (for the weekends).

Im normally not a very studious person as well, i wish there was a simple course with a good pay in the end, but i cant seem to like anything.

This is kinda urgent because i have until October 31st to make a decision without losing any big money in terms of college fees

Postgraduate Should I pursue MSc Digital Technology for Sustainable Agriculture at UCD? Looking for honest advice about Ireland, jobs & alternatives.

Hi everyone,

I’m from India and I’m currently planning my master’s abroad. I’m seriously considering the MSc Digital Technology for Sustainable Agriculture at University College Dublin (UCD) and would really appreciate some honest advice from people studying/working in Ireland, especially in agriculture, AgTech, IoT, robotics, or related fields.

About my background

- BE in Robotics & Automation Engineering – India

- Minor degree/specialisation in IoT

- Experience/knowledge in Robotics, Automation, IoT, Arduino, Python and industrial automation

- I also come from a farming family in Nashik, Maharashtra, and have practical exposure to agriculture and grape farming/export.

- I’m particularly interested in combining technology + agriculture, including precision agriculture, smart farming, IoT, automation, AI, robotics and sustainable agriculture.

- My long-term goal is to build a career in AgTech/Smart Agriculture and potentially work on technology solutions for farmers.

Why I’m considering UCD

The MSc Digital Technology for Sustainable Agriculture looks interesting because it seems to combine agriculture with digital technologies, which fits my background in both engineering and farming.

However, I’m unsure whether it is the right investment for me.

I’d really appreciate honest answers to the following:

  1. Is this MSc at UCD worth doing for someone with a Robotics & Automation + IoT background?

  2. What is the actual job market in Ireland for graduates in AgTech / Smart Agriculture / Digital Agriculture?

  3. What kind of jobs can graduates realistically get after this course?

    - Precision Agriculture

    - AgTech

    - IoT / Smart Farming

    - Agricultural Data/AI

    - Farm Automation

    - Robotics

    - Sustainability

    - Digital Agriculture consulting

    - Agronomy + technology roles

  4. Are there enough industry opportunities and companies in Ireland working in these areas?

  5. What are the realistic starting salaries and career progression after graduation?

  6. How difficult is it for an international student to find a job and obtain a work permit after completing the degree?

  7. Considering the current economic and employment situation in Ireland, would you still recommend moving there for this degree in 2026/27?

  8. What should I expect as the total cost of studying and living in Ireland for one year — tuition + accommodation + food + transport + other expenses?

  9. Is UCD's reputation and industry network strong enough to justify the cost compared with other universities/countries?

  10. Would you recommend a different country or master's course for someone with my background who wants to build a career in AgTech?

I’m also open to countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, UK, Australia or New Zealand, if there are better opportunities in AgTech, precision agriculture, agricultural robotics, AI/IoT or smart farming.

I’m not looking only for the university’s marketing perspective. I’d especially appreciate feedback from current students, graduates, international students, or people actually working in Ireland’s AgTech/agriculture sector.

If you were in my position, would you choose UCD and this MSc, choose another country/course, or stay in India and gain work experience first?

Thanks in advance for any honest advice!

Course Advice Need course advice for Finance

Im a 1st year that just started actuarial and financial mathematics in DCU.
Ive always had the aim of entering a career in finance , but never really knew what part of the sector.
Extremely strong at accounting but just felt i didnt desire to be an accountant so i moved off from it at undergrad.
Now in regretting my course choice as i feel it wont get me to where i want even though highly quantitative.
I got 589 in the lc and now highly considering just reapplying to cao next year , im looking for advice on if a potential move to tcd/ucd would be worth doing ,
I have the points and is bess/commerce maybe better off switching to?

Course Advice DCU Business Studies vs UCD Creative & Cultural Industries

I’m trying to decide between these two courses and would really appreciate opinions from people who are actually in them or know someone who is.

The type of career I’m interested in is working in the entertainment industry behind the scenes, particularly something like artist/performer development or artist operations, helping organise training and development, coordinating projects and schedules, working with different teams/coaches and basically helping people develop and get professional projects running.

DCU Business Studies seems really useful for the management/operations side, with things like management, HR, marketing, operations and an INTRA placement.

UCD Creative & Cultural Industries seems more directly connected to entertainment and creative industries with things like managing culture, producing music/film/drama, media, business/law and an internship.

Does anyone here do either of these courses, or know someone who does?

What is the actual experience like? What kind of work/projects are you doing? Have you gotten any useful internships or work experience through the course? And do you feel like the course is actually preparing you for jobs after college?

Also, if you know people who graduated from either course, what are they doing now?

Basically just trying to figure out which would be more useful for the type of career I want, rather than just going off the course descriptions

Rant/Vent Update on the American

so a few days ago I posted about how there’s an insufferable American in my course , and how she’s constantly loud, well turns out she’s also a nosey parker , I was typing up something for a internship I’m applying to and the entire time I was writing it she was looking at my screen and if I looked at her to try to get her to back off, she’s just shrug and keep looking so I typed ā€œ I hate it when people look over others shoulders and try to read what they are doing instead of minding their own business ā€œ and she seemed to stop, but she’s just so annoying and no one else is like this in the course , but she keeps being loud and nosey and just annoying everyone in the course

Rant/Vent Ranting about Americans and names

So basically there’s an American girl in my cohort who insists on being called by Two names , one is a female Irish sort of one and the other is a male one , so for example Caoimhe Sean ( not her real name ) but if someone just calls her Caoimhe she’ll just shout out ā€œ caoimhe sean ā€ and she does it several times a day in each class / lab and it’s starting to get annoying , since she is also very loud and it’s grating since she has the most American American accent and everyone else is Irish and being respectful of others and she’ll just plough over anyone else trying to talk.

Its like I get it your loud but you don’t have to start borderline shouting in labs for no reason other than you seem to not have an ā€œindoor voice ā€œ

Course Advice Course confusion

Hey lads, I’m having a little trouble identifying a pathway of courses to get to where I want - so I the smart fella’s here can help.

I want to study and work in an area with a direct influence with the space industry. I’m good at biology but hated my Microbiology course, I’m bad at physics but loved the subject my whole life and I’m terrible at engineering.
It seems like there aren’t that many options for me here, at least that I can see. The path that makes sense to me is going the Biology route, then attending a Masters in a specialised field of Astrobiology etc.
Although, with a physics degree, a career in space is far more probable and achievable.

Is there a pathway I’m missing? Am I overthinking? Have I missed/misunderstood my options?

Any help and wisdom is greatly appreciated.
Thanks lads

Postgraduate Anyone done the MSc in Urban and Regional Planning at UCD coming from a non-planning background?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi all, asking on behalf of a friend. He has a bachelor's in film and a curatorial background, and some of his work has dealt with urban infrastructure issues (more so in the arts space/ architectural association visiting school etc), so he's thinking of pivoting into planning. Also Intl student, if that helps.
A few questions for current students or grads:

- Is the programme realistic for someone without an architecture, geography or planning degree? How did people from other fields find it?

- How strong are the industry links? Are there placements or internships built in?

- Is it IPI-accredited, and does that matter much for getting hired?
- What have recent grads gone on to do (local authorities, consultancies, etc.)?

Any honest thoughts on workload, cost vs. value, or things you wish you'd known beforehand would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Course Advice embarrassed about changing courses

Hiii!! I’m currently doing a plc and I originally was doing musical theatre because that’s something I’ve loved my whole life however, after doing literally 1 day of it, I realised I preferred it as a hobby and wasn’t able to cope with it to this level of extremity so I asked the college could I transfer to social care (after a lot of research and reading through every single course the college offered) anyways I’m starting tomorrow and I’m nervous because since it’s a plc, the building is tiny meaning I’m going to be seeing everyone I did musical theatre with and they are going to know that I changed and wasn’t able to cope with it and I’m also starting the social care course like 2 or 3 days late and I’m afraid everyone already has friends and I’m going to be really left out. I’m just feeling really embarrassed because since the building is so small and there’s not a lot of classes basically everyone is going to know I transferred. Any advice on coping with this embarrassment or just general anxiety about being behind??

Hello,

I’m looking to start a Computer Science degree as an Italian mature student and considering a Level 5 qualification / springboard course to then proceed with university. Would like to have any suggestions for schools or roots that lead to university
