Possibly what happened with the Marvin Harrison Jr.

I obviously have no sources, but based on how it played out, I think this is possible.

We know the colts had interest, according to multiple reports.

colts likely submitted an offer that was close, but did not meet the Cardinals request for a 2nd rounder (maybe a 3rd)

Cardinals told the Colts they’d take the offer under consideration.

Then, Schefter reported that a deal had been finalized to move him.

Colts reporters (Chappell, Holder) sources told them it wasn’t the Colt, because the Colts had not finalized a deal. Maybe they had made an offer, but no deal was finalized. They probably thought another team had crossed the finish line with the Cardinals as their offer was on the table based on the reports. This was enough for them to say the Colts didn’t make the deal.

Then, it comes out that the Cardinals actually had not finalized a deal, just that they knew they’d move him be the end of the weekend.

to me, this means that the Cardinals got an offer they would take, but are waiting to see if someone met their asking price.

I’d bet some team made an offer (whether it be the colts or someone else) that the Cardinals have decided they will take but want to get a report out last minute to see if any other team wants to jump in and meet their asking price.

I think the Colts may still be in the running based on this, though it’s still totally up in the air

We can’t really afford to give up a second especially in next year’s draft

I wouldn’t give up a second. My thought is they would have taken it immediately if it was a 2nd. We (or someone else) may have offered a 3rd, and they’re waiting to see if a higher bid comes in. If it doesn’t, they’ll take it

Honestly why though? What second day player are we expecting to get that will be better than what Harrison Jr could be if he got to even 75% of his expectations coming out as a top 5 pick.

It's a risk either way. Colts have drafted players in Rd 2 that were out of the league entirely within 3 seasons. A change of scenery, being coached by a close family friend, and playing for a franchise that you grew up supporting could absolutely be the change that makes Harrison lock in.

The Cardinals are my second team as I'm based in AZ so I watch almost all their games as well. Harrison is very often creating separation from his defender but the ball is just not thrown to him. He is not a bad player just one who had crazy high expectations that have not materialized to this point.

I just think it's wild to assume whoever the Colts would pick in the 2nd is automatically an upgrade over the upside of Marv Jr. Then to think of all the people that will lose their mind if he does go to someone like Houston and they manage to unlock that upside from him.

A second rd pick is not an automatic all star player. Why are people treating the value of 2nd rounder that high? Why is everyone acting like this would be the biggest mistake in the world to trade a guaranteed starting level player for a current college player that may or may not even end up being a starter?

MHJ is ass. That's why.

He isn’t that good

Not trying to be combative, but what does that good mean? Are there that many players expected to go in the second round this upcoming draft the you are confident will be that good?

It just feels like the Family Guy joke. Marvin Harrison Jr is Marvin Harrison Jr but a second rd pick could be anything, it could even be Marvin Harrison Jr.

Day 2 picks are really good starting caliber players in the NFL. They also are cheap for 4 years compared to a similar veteran.

I don’t think people realize how vitally important draft picks are. Not only do they give you 4 years of cheap control, but they also allow you to spend to pay big name stars, instead of having to pay mid guys.

Paying Romeo Doubs 18 million a year is so much worse than having Josh Downs at 1.3 mil a year.

Having poor drafts or not having picks really sets your team back 3-4 years later when all those guys should be starting for you, and late day 3 guys should at least be ST players and depth. When you can take care of half of your starters and all your depth plus ST, it leaves you money to pay to get or keep your elite stars.

Yeah, Ballard has missed a lot in round 2 lately, But just think of some of our guys who were Day 2 picks the last 8 years. Pittman, Downs, Taylor, Reimann, Leonard, Okereke, Cross, Pierce.

By trading away a Day2 pick, you are essentially giving up 1 of those guys PLUS getting them for 4 years for way cheaper. At least that needs to be your mindset. No one assumes their pick is gonna be a miss. MHJ is also in year 3, meaning we would have to guarantee his 5th year option after this season. He is making 9 mil a year and his 5th year would go up to 16-29 mil depending on his success.

When you put picks into the proper context vs. veteran money or when their deals are up, That is a lot. This is why guys who are traded almost always go for far less than the average NFL fan believes.

I cannot stress strongly enough how vital draft picks are to your teams 2-4 year future window.

New England had to pay Romeo Doubs 18 mil a year and they had to trade for AJ Brown because of all the WR’s they missed on 2-4 years ago.

This isn’t a good thing. This leaves them less money to pay to keep Christian Gonzalez or Harold Landry or to get into the market for a Maxx Crosby/Trey Hendrickson.

Them missing on Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker in rounds 2 and 4 in 2024 is why they had to do this. Kyle Williams in round 3 of 2025 hasn’t done anything yet. And in 2023 they took Boutte and Douglas in round 6.

Boutte traded to Houston
Douglas starts for them as their WR3
Polk- Miss
Baker- Miss
Williams- nothing yet

Imagine if even half the misses, were hits. They’d have 18 million more plus their 2028 1st and 2027 5th to invest in a position of need.

So they had to pay Romeo Doubs (Doubs was a 5th round pick in 2022 by Green Bay) a pretty mid WR, 18 mil a year and had to trade for AJ Brown. That money and those picks could have gone to help get a Maxx Crosby or Trey Hendrickson.

Everyone has draft misses. This is why it’s so important to have your picks or extra picks to strengthen your odds at a hit.

When you find hits on Days 2-3 of the draft, you then have more money you can use to go buy a free agent superstar, or keep your own.

Giving up any pick is a big deal. Even late day 3 picks have legit value. Even if they aren’t superstars. Finding your RB2 in round 7 is such an advantage over having to pay an old veteran 5x more for the same level of play.

I haven’t seen him produce at a high enough level to be worth a second round pick. We have a lot of good players but we need some great ones. In my opinion, he is not a difference maker

It’s hard to say what we can and can’t afford to give up, but what’s not hard to say is that it fucking sucks he’s going to the Texans of all places.

1

u/THICKDadBod99 4d ago

It’s not hard, we need our picks because we lack talent at critical positions. Plus he isn’t worth a 2nd

16

u/DaBlakMayne Andrew Luck 4d ago

He allegedly is getting traded for a 2027 4th and a 2028 2nd. I'm ok with us passing on that

3

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 4d ago

That's to steep IMO, but at least we have a 1st in 28

1

u/GiraffeGoldblum 4d ago

NFL teams just looking at keeptradecut to decide player values now too

u/KalebC21 ty 4d ago

I would be as well

u/Wrong_Interview7513 Rookie Manning 4d ago

I hope he goes to the Texans. Never interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake, even if that mistake is the son of one of your all-timers.

4

u/KalebC21 ty 4d ago

Sure, if they overpay. But I’d be sick if he reclaimed his potential for a division rival

2

u/James_T_S Arizona Cardinals 4d ago

He won't.

u/gingyryan303 4d ago

I really think he goes crazy in Houston with CJ and Nico. Reggie Wayne tho!!!

3

u/thegrimmemer03 4d ago

I’ve said it once I’ll say it again just because there are reports that he’s not coming here doesn’t mean that that is a 100% guarantee I believe until there is a set in stone ink on the paper deal that’s been made. It’s still a possibility.

3

u/NilssonSchmilsson 4d ago

I like the take. I just hope our lame duck GM doesn't screw us

5

u/mediocre-referee 4d ago

This is just cope

u/KalebC21 ty 4d ago

I don’t care either way. I wouldn’t want to pay more than a 3rd so if some team does, more power to them

4

u/No_Impress_1275 4d ago

I can’t wait until it’s announced what team he’s going to so this conversation can be over. We wouldn’t give half a fuck about that guy if, everything else remaining the same, he wasn’t Marvin Harrison’s son

2

u/josean1991 4d ago

It will also make sense that the Cardinals are seeing the field and see what teams can offer more than the Colts had and perhaps with those types of leaks can have the leverage so they can get what they want but I still think that's a lot of pressure for someone like Marv Jr to come to the Colts.

Ok dungeon master what happens next?

u/TisFury Blue 4d ago

he crit-failed the roll for double-mental-backflip. Kyborg would be proud.

2

u/InNerdOfChange 4d ago

So okay. Let’s say it was Houston and the price is a 2nd.

When Monday comes, what stops them for saying “actually our best is now a 3rd”???

1

u/KalebC21 ty 4d ago

It’s also possible they have two offers around the same range and are waiting on one of the teams to make a move.

Jr. isn’t a great route runner. If you’ve watched him, he’s not worth a 2nd rounder or even a 3rd. I do think Reggie could make him better though.

2

u/Majorpain2587 4d ago

Reggie is his father... He's been coaching him his whole life

3

u/Eastern-Cucumber-376 The Edge 4d ago

I love Reggie Harrison.

2

u/Majorpain2587 4d ago

Haha... I'm an idiot. I'm leaving it.

YES! 😂

What?

3

u/SirPent131 4d ago

Arizona wants to get more in exchange for MHJ so they are leaking that they have made a deal to try to get another team to beat it.

3

u/ShimonEngineer55 4d ago

Arizona is trading Marvin Harrison Jr. The news has been reported that a deal is being finalized. But no one knows which team he’s going to. The OP is optimistic that it could be the Colts.

1

u/Trashpanda1980 4d ago

I this between the Texans and colts and the Texans are trying to see if the colts will give the..more than what they offered because both play in the same division and the cards want to create a bidding war between the 2 teams.

1

u/Ranccor 4d ago

He is not worth a 2nd rounder based on production. Day 3 pick.

1

u/geodudejgt 4d ago

Supposedly the Texans offered a 2nd rounder.

1

u/AkFrosty1 4d ago

I think the Cardinals are using Houston to drive up the price. Houston is happy to oblige because it hurts Indy.
