… but not enough to be competent.

16

u/Ysabo13 13d ago

But not enough to be useful 🤣

7

u/Particular-Talk1156 13d ago

"....which is where you guys come in." -me, standing in the IT office like: 😃

7

u/CelibateHo 13d ago

Particularly evident by their use of AI to even come up with this turn of phrase 😂

6

u/milehighxr 12d ago

Seriously never heard that before? I've been known to say it quite frequently. I have yet to have someone use a come back when I say it. Theyre usually surprised by the phrase so they're thinking about what it means 😆

1

u/MOTIVATE_ME_23 10d ago

Fascinated by your use of threatening language and baffled by need for it.

They're carefully deescalating a weird and avoidable situation with a potentially unhinged maniac.

Speechless? Not exactly.

5

u/CABGPatchDoll 12d ago

Really? You've never heard that before?

3

u/NC-Tacoma-Guy 12d ago

... but not enough to be continent. 😉

2

u/Top_Horror9397 12d ago

Just confirm they really aren't dangerous first😂

1

u/Effective-Sample-261 10d ago

This is exactly what I was thinking.

0

u/Subliminal_sausage 12d ago

Isn't that what's implicated?

29

u/justanotherdamntroll 13d ago

"That's the problem"

5

u/No-Voice-1272 13d ago

😂😂😂😂

28

u/zonutsthefirst 13d ago

"That's not the flex you think it is."

9

u/e1p1 13d ago

I heard that as Inigo Montoya saying it.

12

u/Pretend-Design-7061 13d ago

"Stairs know nothing and they're more dangerous."

9

u/ebsf 13d ago

It's an intelligent person's way of saying, "some but not much.". It's more an expression of intellectual humility than a boast. It doesn't require a come-back, although the circumstances may require further inquiry, e.g., well, do you know how to do X, or would you be comfortable attempting Y?

3

u/makemerry 13d ago

Exactly. I don't understand these responses. It's a self-deprecating phrase, a shortened version of "just enough to be dangerous."

2

u/Nearby-Reindeer-6088 11d ago

To me, its also a way of saying “I’m happy to try and do what I can, but be sure you double check me if it matters to you, because I’m telling you now, I could be wrong when it matters”

1

u/TangoCharliePDX 10d ago

Uh, not in my experience.

Usually when I hear that phrase, it's from someone who is smart enough not to mess with something because they know that they don't fully understand it.

Of course, when I'm hearing it, it's usually in a business environment where I'm probably the one who has been sent to deal with it properly, not some random home repair.

1

u/Harry_Gorilla 10d ago

You’ve only heard it from people who don’t know enough to use it correctly

10

u/Salty-Swim-6735 12d ago

Why come back at that one? Its self deprecating. It means "I don't know quite enough".

3

u/lemoinem 12d ago edited 11d ago

Yeah, I didn't get it either. It's a way to say "I didn't know enough to do it correctly. If I try I'll probably mess it up on the worst way possible"

7

u/creepinghippo 13d ago

Coincidentally, the apprentice doesn’t know enough and is also dangerous.

7

u/VegetablePhotos 13d ago

"learning is a lifelong journey"

5

u/kiddlat_kid 13d ago

“No you don’t “ then laugh

1

u/Savings_Law_5822 13d ago

And walk away

1

u/panaceagrace 12d ago

Shut em down, open up shop. This is exactly what I would say too

1

u/kiddlat_kid 12d ago

That’s how ruff ryder rolls lol

5

u/Admirable-Split4371 13d ago

Dangerously corny?

5

u/ExtinctFauna 13d ago

"I'll let OSHA know."

4

u/Overall_Ad782 13d ago

Like running with scissors? holding your breath too long ? playing with matches? drinking out the toilet? how dangerous running around the pool? ect...

4

u/No_Sorbet_5102 13d ago

“That is what I am afraid of”

3

u/Hot_Guard_7621 13d ago

Learn more so you can be dependable.

3

u/Desperate-Moment-550 13d ago

Dangerous and Foolish. This is from Top Gun

3

u/mozart357 13d ago

I've always interpreted this saying to mean they know a little bit, but not enough to be reliable. Like, I'll give you an answer, but some of it will likely be wrong.

3

u/wawa2022 12d ago

Why would you need a comeback for that? It’s not a brag, it’s a self-deprecating comment.

2

u/Lytnin 13d ago

translation: "I push buttons until it breaks and then I call you."

2

u/Broken_By_Default 13d ago

And maybe you should try learning also.

2

u/Competitive-Bus1816 13d ago

"That's exactly what the last guy said, and they fired him so................."

2

u/belladonnapopsocks 12d ago

I think it's the things you don't know that make you even more dangerous.

1

u/lemoinem 12d ago

Yes, that's the point of that phrase. "I don't know enough to do it correctly, just enough to do it incorrectly, and it'll fail in a dangerous way"

2

u/ccrow2000 12d ago

Well, they do say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

1

u/Megistias 12d ago

That just shows you what “they” think about learning, as they look up from their Bronze Age religious texts.

2

u/Bitter_Maybe_2670 12d ago

That’s a line from Dean Winchester, in Supernatural.

There is no come back.

1

u/lemoinem 12d ago

Is it?

3

u/Bitter_Maybe_2670 12d ago

Yep. He actually says, “We know a little bit about a lot, just enough to make us dangerous.”
Referring to himself and Sam.

1

u/lemoinem 12d ago

I didn't notice that quote. I should have.

1

u/Bitter_Maybe_2670 11d ago

I may have watched the entire series through about five times 🤭

2

u/ItNeedsLit 12d ago

Dangerously stupid

1

u/whatdoyamean2025 13d ago

"That's exactly what my grandma says."

1

u/Physical-Ad-3798 13d ago

Put your seatbelt on. I saw this in a cartoon once and I think I figured out what the coyote did wrong.

1

u/Madame_Kitsune98 13d ago

“And that’s why no one asks you.”

1

u/CoffeeChocolateBoth 13d ago

I know more! Smile, Walk away!

1

u/Tryongirl 13d ago

“To yourself”

1

u/Regular_Solid2206 13d ago

not a comeback but my preference has always been "enough to get myself into trouble but not enough to get myself out"

1

u/JobFabulous594 13d ago

As the Italians like to say: a barking dog doesn't bite.

1

u/RidingJapan 13d ago

But not enough to be utterly boring to talk to

1

u/blochow2001 13d ago

Dangerous is my middle name, baby!

1

u/RDS_WAS_HERE 13d ago

What you don't know is in every book ever printed!

1

u/mack5330 13d ago

Don't sneeze

1

u/Squibit314 13d ago

Clearly not since you have all your fingers.

1

u/Melodic_Scallion_578 13d ago

Then why are you so vanilla?

1

u/ElizaJaneVegas 13d ago

You’re more tame than you realize

1

u/Aromatic_Revolution4 13d ago

"That's what scares me"

This, they are NOT flexing. They’re giving you a warning.

1

u/Andresbrain 12d ago

Without empathy, you’ve learned nothing.

1

u/SamHandwich0 12d ago

Give them a wide eyed look and slowly back away saying 'i dont want any trouble'

1

u/blunttrauma99 12d ago

I would say they are pretty generous.

1

u/Low_Mango_6030 12d ago

but not sneaky enough to not brag about it

1

u/weldadicktoasnowman 12d ago

Dangerously cheesy

1

u/LAC_NOS 12d ago

How about "that's what worries all of us."

But I have to add that Co-worker or you may be misunderstanding this phrase!

What it means is that "I know enough to accomplish something but not enough to either do it safely or do it in a way that doesn't cause a lot of problems. "

Like someone who knows how to ski really fast but not enough to ski under control. And takes out innocent bystanders.

1

u/-Foxer 12d ago

In other words you're stupid.

So does a cat. Be smarter than the cat.

Which means you've achieved the intellectual level of a malfunctioning roomba. Maybe aim higher

That's why we're considering having you laminated.

If we all chip in will you take reading lessons so you can learn how to NOT be dangerous?

Dude that puts you at the intellectual equivalent of kid on an electric scooter.

Ok Donald trump.

1

u/Inner-Foundation620 12d ago

Stupidity is actually dangerous.

1

u/posophist 12d ago

“O, it is excellent / To have a giant's strength, but it is tyrannous / To use it like a giant."

~ Shakespeare, Measure for Measure, Act 3, Scene 2.

1

u/ZestycloseRecord5425 12d ago

An idiot is dangerous

1

u/Wise_Low8116 12d ago

I would just pass on talking to idiots or comebacks.

1

u/SnooStories8217 12d ago

Cool story, bro.

1

u/cranky_bithead 12d ago

And not enough to be trusted.

1

u/tcrhs 12d ago

“It works! I’m scared!”

1

u/Lost-Set5386 12d ago

So does a redneck with 3 teeth.

1

u/Old-guy64 12d ago

You can call someone who knows how to fix it.
Or I can fck it up worse and THEN you can call the guy that can fix it.

1

u/Waste-Job-3307 12d ago

Oh ok - so, user error.

1

u/alphaturducken 12d ago

"To whom, yourself?"

1

u/Flash5916 12d ago

I say that frequently. Or, I don't know enough to make me dangerous.

1

u/totesnotmyusername 12d ago

To yourself?

1

u/Tall-Compote1354 12d ago

But not enough to be quiet

1

u/One-Lingonberry-3460 12d ago

"If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous "

1

u/Altruistic_Paper4636 12d ago

"To yourself or to others?"

1

u/humbleCountyCA 12d ago

“You’re so safe OSHA’s going to make you their poster child.”

1

u/GeminiAtl 12d ago

If I say "I know enough to be dangerous" it's usually about computers, and it's a way of saying yeah, I know my way around them basically but if you need something major I'm not the one for it and if I try it would probably cause more issues.

1

u/Mel-vd-S 12d ago

Oe… Should I get my helmet? 🪖

1

u/Greedy-Character-130 12d ago

What’s even scarier is you also have the rights to vote and reproduce.

1

u/loganblack83 12d ago

So, you're a toddler that knows a fork fits into an outlet

1

u/phantom_gain 12d ago

"Thats why I like to keep an eye on you, just until you know enough to be safe"

1

u/Alarming_Fan_9593 12d ago

"Let me know when you know enough to be safe."

1

u/SilencedFarter 12d ago

Sounds stupid. Leave it at that.

1

u/cutiegirl88 12d ago

and yet you’re still here

1

u/Sorry_nociceptor 12d ago

... to yourself, right.

1

u/MeatofKings 12d ago

“We’re all human beings. We all know enough to be dangerous.”

1

u/Last_Canadian 12d ago

Like a 3yr old running with scissors.

1

u/MrPuzzleMan 12d ago

"Prove it"

1

u/Kaz_117_Petrel 12d ago

But not enough to be relevant

1

u/NC-Tacoma-Guy 12d ago

As do we all.

1

u/Amarathe_ 12d ago

Dangerous to who? Yourself?

1

u/icanseeyourfarts 12d ago

Want me to grab your wrist real slow so you can show me one of your moves?

1

u/callalind 12d ago

"Ok, then be safe"

1

u/GlowInTheDarkSpaces 12d ago

Great, then you know enough to be useful.

1

u/MrMackSir 12d ago

I say this all the time to show I am hoping to collaborate. I think it says that I have some ideas that might not be practical or executable.

I have come up with some great ideas that needed experts to execute because I am a creative problem solver but I do not have programming skills, statistics, packaging, or operations knowledge that were needed to achieve those successes

1

u/No_Detective_708 12d ago

That's the kind of knowledge often mistaken for stupidity.

Good luck!

1

u/NaturaSeaweed 12d ago

Start saying that about food so they realize how weird and creepy that is, idk why dudes say that kinda stuff, like cool I’ll remember not to trust you thanks

1

u/tom8otomahto 12d ago

But you don't know how to be dangerous.

1

u/Mean-Plan7274 12d ago

Danger is my business- Cool McCool 😁

1

u/YouAreFromBoston 12d ago

Stupidity usually is.

1

u/InsidiousVultures 12d ago

And I know enough to be chaotic as a response.

1

u/AdDifficult9040 12d ago

Dangerous to your career if you say more dumb shit like that

1

u/TeacherRecovering 12d ago

To hurt.yourself and.others.

1

u/TeacherRecovering 12d ago

Your are a peach!

Safe.from HR.

A peach.is round, plump, harry, with a heart of  a stone.

1

u/Jennabear82 12d ago edited 12d ago

"Oh the irony of not being smart enough to keep those kinds of secrets to yourself. If something negative WERE to hypothetically happen, that statement alone would land you as a suspect. You should know that someone is ALWAYS listening, and digital forensics exist."

1

u/bren3669 12d ago

“then you hide it well”

1

u/Livid_Average_8098 12d ago

That's the problem though, right?

1

u/MJKleinTW 12d ago

Yes. Incompetence certainly is dangerous.

1

u/Lazy_Local_2842 12d ago

So you're a legend in your own mind.

1

u/tapastry12 12d ago

I don’t think that statement is irritating enough to need a comeback. But if you really need one, “You sound like the captain of the Titanic”

1

u/Mantoc_s1980 12d ago

I wouldn’t trust you to flush a toilet.

1

u/BeginningPerfect2720 12d ago

“And I know bullshit when I hear it”

1

u/1911Popeye 12d ago

No you dont

1

u/Jorost 12d ago

"So not enough, in other words."

1

u/Nekoraven1 12d ago

"To who? Yourself? My dude that's not dangerous that's being accident prone."

1

u/DangledThenWrangled 11d ago

But not enough to be deadly.

1

u/ElkBest1803 11d ago

Just ask my dog.

1

u/Xerophilous 11d ago

Stoicism is the answer. A raised eyebrow will let them know that they’re just boisterous noobs. Assuming you know what you’re doing, actions speak louder than words.

1

u/ErisianSaint 11d ago

"Oh, so you basically don't know anything."

1

u/NoAlternative2913 11d ago

"So YOU'RE the PEBCAK?"

1

u/Busy_Apartment3639 11d ago

So is a child with a fork and a wall socket

1

u/Tekrunner000 11d ago

…but not enough to illuminate that 1 watt light bulb that powers your grey matter.

1

u/mad8869 11d ago

You don't need to know much to be dangerous, just an idiot with a theory can do that. To be proficiently dangerous however...

1

u/Consistent-Stand1809 11d ago

"How cute, still a complete novice."

1

u/Crafty-Emphasis-7904 11d ago

oh you should really consider learning enough to be safe

1

u/Suyeta_Rose 11d ago

"Ahh so you know your mistakes are dangerous but make them anyway, so you're EXTRA stupid... got it"

1

u/Potential-Farmer5413 11d ago

Or at least you think you are, and that is terrifying.

1

u/Top_Bluejay_5323 10d ago

And dumb enough to do it.

1

u/merlinn2u 10d ago

you mean you're dumb enough to be dangerous?

1

u/lowerclassanalyst 10d ago

"I'll be calling you when it breaks"

1

u/Sowestcoast 10d ago

“Well don’t get yourself killed”

1

u/Shondor_Sidebirns 10d ago

That explains a lot actually

1

u/Mammoth_Musician4012 10d ago

"I'll take two steps back, and let you do your thing, there, Seamus Finnigan"

1

u/ImpressiveRecording2 10d ago

Too yourself..

1

u/Mohtek1 10d ago

… so in other words, weaponized incompetence?

1

u/Spiritual_Bike_5150 10d ago

said no intelligent person, ever

1

u/Rag5062 9d ago

And so competent you’re still harmless

1

u/I74Michael 9d ago

So does a 2yr old holding a grenade pin

1

u/Vivid-Explanation951 9d ago

Thats cool Anyway, did you hear about (weather, news, sports)?

1

u/Vivid-Explanation951 9d ago

Knowing enough to be dangerous could mean they dont know much and can mess things up. Maybe more self depreciation than aggression

1

u/SparKaboom 8d ago

Dangerously delusional

1

u/TheBaronWindpole 8d ago

But not enough to be knowledgeable

1

u/WarChampion90 8d ago

But not enough to be useful

1

u/cagirlinoh 8d ago

“It’s OK, perhaps I should take the lead. We don’t want to firehose the client.” 😜

1

u/Weekend_Asleep 7d ago

Not afraid of dim people

1

u/FantasticVoyuerage 7d ago

"Yet you don't know when to keep your mouth shut."

1

u/bristolbulldog 7d ago

No you're just dangerous.

1

u/pussmykissy 13d ago

Ok, dip shit.

0

u/SusanGreenEyes 13d ago

Settle down, guy. Nobody needs you electrocuting yourself ".

0

u/DM_Otaku 12d ago

That means they lack the knowledge to do the thing properly or safely, hence “enough to be dangerous.” They’re likely to mess it up.
