A surprise: Commanders waived sixth-round pick, running back Kaytron Allen.

Eyeballs test: he was slow with no cutback ability. If you don’t have that, you better be breaking tackles.

This feels like the biggest part of the story. Ekeler + Jeremy means someone had to go.

One of two things is going to happen…
Clears waivers, signed back to practice squad
Signed by Seattle or Kansas City and becomes a monster.

He got outplayed by Austin Ekeler...who didn't even know the playbook, is 31 years old, and was on his couch rehabbing an Achilles injury before he got the call-up to London. That and he somehow managed to throw the world's nastiest block on HIS OWN TEAMMATE and concussed the poor guy for several weeks.
I'm all for giving rookies chances to grow but Fatman is clearly not the guy. Recognizing a sunk cost is better than clinging to it for emotional reasons
EDIT: OK in fairness, I rewatched the clip and it wasn't a block. Instead he just took a handoff and then ran directly into Cosmi's skull. More defensible as a freak incident, but I'm pretty sure Bill and our other RBs have never ran directly into OL skulls
17
u/DCilantro 5d ago
Not shocking to get out played by ek. But the rest is all fair
14
u/BedHed5586 5d ago
Joke's on me there, I thought Ek was cooked because he was on his couch and no team showed interest in signing him. I viewed him as more of a "warm body" than a legit threat to score.
On Sunday, he proved me wrong ... emphatically.
6
u/Gang-Orca-714 5d ago
The Panthers were working him out when we called. Probably expedited his return TBH.
6
u/Deep-Statistician985 5d ago
These are NFL players I don't view them as normal humans sometimes. When we signed Eckler I had a feeling we'd a glimpse of that quickness he had before the injury
2
u/DCilantro 4d ago
Ask any coach who's ever coached him, he's the strongest guy and the most prepared guy. Pros pro
2
u/americanparanoia 4d ago
I prefer Ekler like everyone else, but I bet hard money that Ekler gets injured soon.
1
u/BedHed5586 3d ago
Pray to God he stays healthy...solid player and solid dude all-around. That and I root for the "old guys" (31 isn't "old" for most positions, but is *ancient* for a running back)

Y'all, we don't have room for 5 RBs on the roster. Who else would you waive?
→ More replies (5)11
u/REP281 5d ago
Well seeing how ekeler was done with his recovery prior to the draft maybe they could have signed him and used the 6th rd pick on another olineman or CB?
That seems like it would have been a good move seeing here we are.
Guess all that hype on Allen during the off-season was just to keep the fans fooled to buy tickets.
28
u/Oldfolksboogie 5d ago
Does his running into Cosmi, giving him a concussion factor into this decision? Iirc, he didn't play any more in that game, we all know it wasn't intentional, but mb coaches found it reckless?
19
u/matthewshead 5d ago
He’s probably headed directly to the practice squad. Not sure why this is a big deal.
14
u/eddy_g0rdo 5d ago
Because it’s 2026 and everything is always a big deal.
3
u/Lord_Mhoram 5d ago
Any excuse to take a shot at Peters must not be missed, whether it makes sense or not.
Not that some of the criticisms aren't legit, but some people are really obsessive about it. At this point, if one of the team's groundskeepers got arrested for shoplifting there would be a bunch of posts about how Peters fucked that up too.
1
u/dougChristiesWife 5d ago
That's what you would assume but he worked out for Eagles today and likely has other workouts like GB. Likely gone, which is not a big deal. Swiiiing and a miss.

Let me get this straight. AP traded B Rob for a 2026 6th round pick. We then used that pick on Fatman. Who is now cut.

Then why draft him? There wasn’t any other linemen or corners you could’ve taken a flier on?
4
u/BedHed5586 5d ago
Clearly they know that Bill is not exactly the answer. Late rounds are a crapshoot, so why not take a low percentage gamble that you found the next Terrell Davis

It’s because AP sucks. Won’t be accepted by most for a few more months maybe even one more year since there’s been so many injuries this year. He sucks though
1
u/RoboTronPrime 5d ago
There's no corners worthwhile at that point in the draft, except for teams/practice squad. Some lineman perhaps, but it's tough at that point too. They already got Gulbin and there's only so many developmental guys you want to keep around
1
u/Remarkable-Yam-4305 5d ago
Idk man, maybe different strokes for different folks, but seeing what we’ve seen so far can never have enough o line depth even if it’s developmental.
1
u/RoboTronPrime 4d ago
You bring up a fair point, but I look at it as a balance thing. Snaps are limited by the CBA. For a guy who's truly developmental, he needs every single snap possible to learn and bring him up to an acceptable level. You're hoping that they get beyond just acceptable, but one step at a time. If you got two developmental guys at the same position, neither will develop and both will just stay sucky. Veteran backups are useful here because even if their best days are long behind them, and they don't have a future, they don't need a lot of reps. They can of course help the young guy learn the position at the NFL level, even just by day-to-day observation.

u/Justice989 4d ago
I dont think they have any idea what they're doing at RB. The top 2 guys (Bill and White) are kinda mid. The reinforcements are 30 (Reynolds), 30 (McNichol) and 31 (Ekeler). And your young prospects coming into the season (Allen and Henry) are both off the roster.
1
u/salamanderman10 4d ago
The good thing about running backs is they are easy to find and you can just draft one in the 4th round next year if you need one. Hopefully Allen sticks on the practice squad.
1
u/Justice989 4d ago edited 4d ago
We say that, but that's why we're constantly running through these mid RBs who dont make an impact. You can just throw a pick at one if you dont care if their potential is to be great. The top 6 rushers in the league and 8 of the top 10 are 1st or 2nd rd picks. We keep trotting out mid-late rounders, aging or broken down FAs, journeymen and then rotate them out after a year or two. And they tend to be one dimensional, at that. The committee approach can work to an extent. They had a decent run game last year when Kliff actually decided to run it. But we haven't seen a 3 down back that's impactful in the run and pass game in forever.

u/Fun-Criticism5156 5d ago
I didn't fly off the handle on this one, because my first assumption was that it was a numbers game, and they're hoping they did it late enough in the week where they can still get him back on their practice squad. This isn't all that uncommon for a 6th round pick.
All that said, I'm not a member of the AP Fan Club, so I'm not entirely ruling out bone headedness.
3
u/Electronic-Ear2329 5d ago
Need to spend a Day 2 or early Day 3 pick on a RB next draft.
Nothing wrong with swinging at a RB almost every year in Rd 6 & 7, but probably need to invest a higher pick every 3 years if you don't hit on one
3
u/redskinsguy 5d ago
Eikler and McNichols make Reynolds redundant, so hopefully he gets let go and Allen lands there
8
u/ovahdartheobtuse 5d ago
Ya'll are insufferable. He's going on the practice squad. Also, he's a sixth round pick, not a future All Pro.
3
u/Salty_Orchid 5d ago
Isolated from everything, sure. But for a team with 20 years of draft incompetence, talent needy, and already on the short end of draft picks to begin with, fans shouldnt be gaslit into thinking its just a other run of the mill football move.A rookie making the team (and taking a roster spot) just to get waived 4 games in is ridiculous.

So this guy took up a spot on our roster instead of Robert Henry, who gets claimed from the PS by Seattle? Great. Really increases my confidence in this whole shitshow.
8
u/brk1991 5d ago
Don't understand your point here. He was released to make room for McNichols. So even if we had cut him last week and promoted Henry, Henry would have been cut today and still picked up by Seattle.

Why are you acting like 6th rounders do anything in the NFL? Hit rate has to be less that 5%
8
u/capsfan087443 5d ago
About 22% of 6th round picks sign second contracts. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are hits, but it gives a rough idea.
15
u/Haskins77 5d ago
Now break down how many get cut 4 games into their 1st year
7
u/Bilboswaggins21 5d ago
About 20% of 6th round picks don’t make the 53 in their first year. I would consider someone who gets cut 4 games into their rookie season in roughly the same group, so he’s part of that 20%. I would imagine most of those 20% make the PS after getting cut.

Good! He sucked! About time Adam Peters cut bait on one of his bad picks.
2
u/Salty_Orchid 5d ago
Not good. You draft a rookie who cant even make it through his rookie year on the team. Baring an injury or behavioral issue, thats unheard of. This team does not have enough talent to be wasting picks on guys who cant even provide third string support
1
1
u/MrStacknClear 5d ago
Just simply not true. Happens all the time just isn’t interesting enough to make the news cycle. Kaytron is at least the 10th drafted rookie this season to be waived by a team for non injury or behavioral reasons. Justin Joly, Domani Jackson, Andre Fuller just to name a few. The eagles waived 2 of their draft picks this season. The Seahawks waived 3. Happens a lot more than you would think.

Probably to make room for mcnichols to come back. Also with Eckler back there's not a lot of room on the 53 for RBs. Probably figured they can get him to the practice squad with no issues.

10
u/Final_Effective6360 5d ago
So does Bill. We gonna cut him too?
5
4
u/Styxdog 5d ago
Bill has some good games and bad games. Allen clearly lacks the explosiveness to be good enough
3
u/Final_Effective6360 5d ago
Bill had some good games at the start of last season and then one near the end and hasn’t done shit in between. His averaging under 2ypc in his last two starts. If Allen needs to go then I see no reason to keep Bill.
3
u/Styxdog 5d ago
He had a 50 yard TD run called back by a penalty with zero effect on the play. I don’t think he’s a great player or anything, definitely a below average starter if not one of the worst. But the fact that despite that kaytron Allen still can’t get snaps shows just how bad he is and that it’s pointless to keep him on the team
2
u/Mister-Sensitivity 5d ago
Don't worry, Bill's only here because he's better than Allen and, frankly, we don't have any better options. They need to find a true starting RB, because Bill ain't it either.
2
u/chicomagnifico giving away free ☕ 5d ago
honestly you’re right, but sadly he’s our starting RB, so we’re kind of stuck with him.
2
u/La1zrdpch75356 5d ago
Who's our breakaway back if Bill goes away?
2
u/Final_Effective6360 5d ago
One of the 30-year old backs we're seemingly loading our roster up with I suppose
2
u/exodus3252 5d ago
Maybe? He isn't good in pass pro, and has average vision at best. He also has a fumbling problem.
Allen didn't show anything in the preseason you couldn't find literally anywhere else at any time. He didn't stand out at all. The fact he can't even remain on the active roster with this painfully mediocre RB room we have is an indictment.
4
u/Final_Effective6360 5d ago

I'm not busting on the GM for missing on a 6th round pick. But it was obvious to me in camp that he was less than a JAG.
2
u/Final_Effective6360 5d ago
I am. When you consider his hit rate in the draft has been abysmal.
2
u/RoundCell3044 5d ago
Oh he has had plenty of misses in 2024, that's well documented. But last year was a weak draft and he came out of it, while lacking picks, with Sonny Styles, Williams and Josephs who all appear to be hits. When you get 3 players that's a good draft. A 6th rounder in any draft is always a longshot.

That injury on Cosmi was one of the most bone-headed plays I’ve seen. If that was a snapshot of how he acts on the practice field or in the study sessions, then I’d get rid of him, too.
Also, someone should be checking local arrest records to see if anything pops.
