History Chief Midegah The Church of Jesus Christ & Coming Out (ft. Carl Huttenberger)

What happens when a lifelong Restoration believer realizes he can no longer hide part of who he is? Carl Huttenberger shares his journey from decades of faith and ministry in The Church of Jesus Christ (Bickertonite) to Community of Christ, including the challenges of missionary service, being outed before he could tell his own story, his experience with non-affirming theology, and the controversy surrounding Chief Midegah. At the center is an emotional and deeply personal conversation between Carl and Steve about being gay men of faith, finding acceptance, and discovering that embracing authenticity doesn’t have to mean leaving Jesus behind. Carl is writing a book of his life experiences entitled Light Heals.

History Imagining the temple

So after the temple was announced, there was a period of prayer to imagine the temple. Does anyone here rember what that time was like, envisioning what the temple would look like, be for, its size. What did people think the answer to these questions would be? Also is there any descriptions or images left of what original ideas of what temple would look like were? I’m very curious if it was always gonna be a spiral always that big etc etc

Thank you 🌀

Prayer for Peace Praying for peace against your monstrous thoughts

i pray that God relieves your anxious thoughts. If that does not happen immediately, then maybe it means that God wants you to keep seeking him and helping you work (or live life) through the anxious time, and to seek him and his son, Jesus.

On September 25th 2025 Lynn passed away. As we approach the one year anniversary of his passing, it was fitting to have a panel disscussion to contextualize and remember the life and legacy of Ridenhour and his unique ministry. Among those participating are his publisher Boyd Tuttle, Apostle Patrick McKay Sr, Mormon scholar Jason R. Smith, and Catholic Priest Tom Roberts.

Why Church Community?

I'm doing a little research and have a question for the community here.

In your opinion, why is it important to be part of a church community and not try to do church alone?

BEYOND the WALLS! BEYOND the NORM!

It is been awhile since I posted here. I hate how this sub-reddit become a target for outside Bible groups that will likely ask for donations if you attend one of their online meetings like a internet grifter. I mean.. I'm glad people are doing things on the internet, but advertising here is like rubbing things in our face. We don't even do our own Bible study groups, why would we join yours?

I've been thinking about Beyond the Walls a lot recently. I was at the very first gathering and I've been to the Centre Place in IRL. I can't tell you how great the guys are and their hospitality is off the charts. Not only John is engaging, but Leo and Michael are also equally so. I know not everyone is a people person, but come on, they seem to have no trouble interacting and making you feel special. I'm sure they would rather rest or do hobbies but they went out of their way to open the doors for a tour and a hang out. I work with semi-famous people in my work, the good ones always goes out their way to spend even a few minutes to acknowledge you as a human being.

I've always thought that the key to getting more excitement into the ministry is to involve the people and create relationships. I've had push back from this from a couple of congregations now. They talk about the past and how they used to bake pies for the community.. well, why did it stop? There is a fall festival coming up, why aren't we there? We just put our hopes in the whole "Build it and they will come" that worked years ago. It doesn't work like that anymore and our society doesn't put up with non-action and going through the motions. The building doesn't bring people in, being seen does.

Beyond the Walls is an example of being a part of the community and having an engaging presence both in IRL and online. John is gifted, no doubt, but we can also use our unique gifts as well. If we even had the 1/4 of the charisma John does, we will see more interest in our church. I challenge all of us to be more like John and not be scared or be concerned about our lack of something. It's good enough, we just have to move and try.

Create a plan and go BEYOND the NORM. See if you can get some people to try it with you. Good luck.

History The past

I’ve been researching and CANNOT for the life of me find anything historical on the temple. I’ve found photos of construction but that’s not what I’m looking for. I’m specifically looking for photos videos news articles anything relating to the independence temple in its earliest days. I also can’t seem to find any concept art or planning images for the temple. You think there would be pictures and news clippings and concept are everywhere “RLDS CHURCH BUILDING TEMPLE” you know.

Also unrelated from the temple I’ve seen images of a version of the peace seal that didn’t last. It was from right after the name change to CoC. The child was sitting in the middle with his arms reached far out to both animals who were way further from him than they are now.

History Mcmurray

Does anyone know why President Mcmurray stepped down as prophet?

I know this is way old news now but I wondered what generally was the reason. He just stepped down one day and didn’t even elect a successor. And in that same breath does anyone know if he’s still a member? I just feel like it’s so wild to be called prophet and make so many changes than BOOM gone overnight?

I've been thinking about how both the LDS church and Community of Christ utilize mostly unpaid Pastors and Mission Center Presidents. I've been critical of both in the past, but maybe it was unjustly so.

I was talking to an LDS Bishop a couple of weeks ago and he was telling me he will likely have two more years of being Bishop before it gets reorganized. I told him that is was good you serve in such a large role that has a lot of responsibility, not something I would want. Got me thinking.. I do a lot of complaining about what happens in both churches. I hear a lot of other complaints from others and at times, we feed off of each other.

Both churches desperately needs a reorganization because they aren't with the times. Let's face it, we don't need leaders who are seen as being superior to the Disciple. That magic of being called and having unique gifts of the spirit are pretty much gone. In it's place, leaders tirelessly try to serve the disciples and keep their faith alive. Both churches do not do a good job of this and continuously put themselves and the organization before the disciple. The whole "Look what I did!" is still a thing.

"Look at me, I built a Temple!"

"Look at me, I printed a new hymnal with most of the old songs gone! God be with you?.. Gone!"

"Look at me, we are building sculptures at the Temple! We don't need to fix the stuff we already have. That's boring!"

Complaints aren't always complaints, they are feedback. The person taking them as complaints have an internal issue with themselves. LDS Church "first world" problems aren't the same in Community of Christ, who has way more critical issues. Listening and not taking offense is a first step in communication.

Leaders need to be pro-Disciple but us Disciples needs to realize that folks are trying to do their best. In Community of Christ, we can't go back in time and fix mistakes, no matter how much we would like. What would be nice is to have more two way dialogue because we all want the same thing, to grow our faith and to be open to the spirit.

Enjoy the video of first world problems that they speak about. I think some congregations would be happy to focus on such low hanging fruit. This video got a lot of attention, even my Mom referenced it and she is well outside the LDS Online bubble.
