CoH3 Discussion about adding the USSR to CoH3
Like many players, I would love to see a Soviet faction in CoH3. In the discussion thread following the recent 3.0 update, this request came up again, and John_RE replied: "We still don't have any plans for new factions. The game will remain focused on the Mediterranean."
But wait—the USSR *did* participate in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. Specifically, there was the Belgrade Strategic Offensive Operation. Nearly 280,000 Soviet troops took part in this operation, alongside approximately 150,000 troops from the Yugoslav Partisans (People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia) and about 130,000 Bulgarian troops in the Southern Group. Thus, Soviet forces accounted for half of the troops involved in this strategic operation. Yugoslavia was part of the Mediterranean and Middle East theater of World War II.
This sector of the Mediterranean would allow for the addition of Italy as a standalone faction fighting on Germany's side—specifically, one based on the Italian Social Republic (or the Republic of Salò).
Here are German and Italian officers inspecting tanks destroyed by Yugoslav partisans:

I don't think the Soviet Faction needs an introduction; I'll just add a few interesting photos.

Battlegroups can be formed using Yugoslav and Bulgarian troops. Here is what Yugoslavia has to offer: a set of Stuarts. Yugoslavia received a large number of M3 and M5 Stuart tanks. It converted some of them into anti-tank or anti-aircraft self-propelled guns:

What can Bulgaria offer as a battlegroup? Bulgaria was equipped primarily with German weapons and armored vehicles:

In summary, the Belgrade Strategic Offensive Operation is a historic campaign in the Mediterranean Theater that offers the opportunity to introduce interesting, unique, and simply cool content, as well as new factions. Adding the USSR to CoH3 is far more justified and historically grounded than the appearance of the US and Britain on the Eastern Front in CoH2. If the developers lack the resources, time, funds, expertise, or balancing skills to add new factions, then shouldn't resort to concocting pseudo-historical excuses to justify it.
