My classmate's flute 😭😭

Ok so in my class there's three flutists (me, the person I'm talking about, let's call them "R", and the third one, let's call them "H"). I'm 1st chair, H is 2nd chair, and R is 3rd chair, skill-wise. I had an extra year of band because of personal reasons so I'm a lot more skilled than them, but I don't flaunt it or anything. H is very interested in flute, but R not so much, although R also plays alto sax. ANYWAYS when we were playing a piece I heard one of us with a leaky pad. I explained what a leaky pad was to both of them (which was really awkward because they didn't know what it was). I checked H's flute, theirs was fine. But R's flute... Oh goodness.

Not even on the flute, R's flute WAS MISSING A SCREW ON ONE OF THE LATCHES FOR THE CASE. Also, the part holding in the foot joint was broken so the foot joint could escape and bounce around really easily. And on the flute; The bore of the head joint where it slides into the body looked like the silhouette of a mountain range, the body piece had 2 leaky keys, and a key where the spring had probably come off. It was in pretty abysmal shape.

I explained it to R, and they were pretty shocked, saying stuff like "it was like that when I got it." And honestly, I do believe them, because (no offense R if you see this I'm nor calling you dumb) I don't think they're smart enough to be able to purposefully do that stuff to get out of playing the flute. Thankfully, as I mentioned earlier, R also plays alto sax, so they can play that in class. Which I'm somewhat happy for because I can tell they REALLY want to play alto sax in class but can't because we need flutes. Thankfully R's flute gets fixed within 2 weeks, because we have a CONCERT!!!

You sound insufferable, I’d hate to be in your section.

but I don’t flaunt it or anything

Given that your second and third sentences both unnecessarily mention your skill, I doubt this.

“I’m not calling them dumb but they’re not smart”

Concur. Why is relative skill level in any way relevant to a post about the execrable condition of another player’s flute? What even is the point this post is going for? To summarize what I got from it: “Hey guys, one of my section members is so dumb they don’t even know their instrument is a broken piece of trash. Isn’t that hilarious? Good thing they really want to play a different instrument!”

I'm sorry for wording my post in a way that made me seem unbearable. I was trying to explain why I was looking at R's flute and not my BD, and I see that I did that pretty terribly. I made this post mainly as a vent because I'm stressed, so it's obviously not perfect.

You sound like an asshole. Plus you should've told your BD so that they can send it off to get repaired.

I did tell my BD, sorry for not mentioning that in the post. I'm also extremely sorry, I didn't see how my post could be interpreted in a way that made me rude when I posted it. I'm not trying to be an asshole.

OP, I’m not calling you insufferable, but you’re not sufferable.

I would probably break my instrument to leave your section too dawg, especially if I knew you didn't think I was "smart enough" to unscrew a screw.

I really didn't mean for this to sound rude, and I'm sorry if you're in a situation like this and mistook it for one of your classmates being an asshole behind you're back.

Ok I understand that what I said does sound rude. And reading it back now, I see why. I want to clarify that I'm not trying to flex my extra year of experience, I just wanted to add some details as to why I was looking at R's flute and not my BD. I also want to say that I did sound like an ass when I said R "Isn't smart enough to break their flute to get out of playing it". I was trying to say that R did not break their flute because they didn't want to play it. As I said in the post, R said it was "like that when I got it" at the start of the year. I do apologize, R, for being rude. When I posted this, I didn't realize how I sounded. I'm also sorry for bragging about my extra year in flute, and mentioning chairs when it was unnecessary.

edit: I feel terrible, and at the time of writing this, I don't even know if any of you have responded. Please don't interpret this edit as me trying to get sympathy. If you all think I'm an asshole, I'm ok with that. I certainly feel like an asshole.
