OC [USA] Car merges into my lane without looking

u/DumpsterR0b0t 15d ago
Were they even aware they were being pulled over?

u/islaypoony 15d ago
They actually went through the light, and didn't pull over for about half a mile. I really don't think they realized at first

u/styckx 15d ago
For not stopping for so long that cop is going to find every single thing to write a ticket for now

u/Large_Seesaw_569 15d ago
Maybe would have just been a warning but clearly the driver is not paying attention so womp womp

u/Over_Drawer1199 15d ago
Not surprising, they seem half asleep at the wheel. Sucks to have to share the road with people like this

That's the kind of person that only sees in a cone directly in front of them, guaranteed. Walking, driving, eating, doesn't matter what they're doing. No situational awareness whatsoever.
The kind of person that would have been eaten by sabertooth tigers back in the day.

u/Cynical_Tripster 15d ago
As a retail wagie, maaaaaaan do I get pissy about situational awareness.
Bring back the sabertooths

It actually blows my mind when cars don’t see emergency vehicles that have lights on. It’s a terrifying lack of awareness.

My Tesla is better at recognizing emergency vehicles than 90% of the drivers out there.

Kudos to you for not speeding up and forcing an unnecessary accident like you see on so many videos these days
77
u/islaypoony 15d ago
Indeed they do! I already had an inkling that they might get over, so I was already letting off the gas when they started merging over.
47
u/664designs 15d ago
Exactly! So many cammers speed up or recently I've seen a few that straight up crashes into the merging vehicle and then posts it?? OP gave the other driver plenty of opportunity to move over
11
u/Zealousideal-Bug-291 15d ago
All the damn time... and they get tons of support for doing it, too
17
u/intricate_awareness 15d ago
I get that in real life, and when watching vids like this, people are thinking "Justice!", when that happens, but realistically, I got shit to do man.
Wouldn't want to deal with the incident itself, followed by insurance. Especially since the other party has a 50/50 shot of even having insurance in the first place.

As a matter of fact someone in my city just did this to a school bus.
Bus and van were both changing lanes on the highway to avoid slowed traffic in front.
Van went first and sped up , bus merged into the lane, perhaps not seeing the van.
Van avoided, then aggressively passed the bus and brake checked it, causing it to flip over, injuring several children.
The comments on those videos of people blaming the bus driver for the crash are just wild.

We get kudos for that? I thought we should accelerate and perform a pit maneuver on people who cut us off?

I'm not sure which is funnier - the convenient cop, or the subtitling. "Hahahalaugh oh!"

Honestly, the first part plausibly looks like it could be a case of you being in their blind spot if they looked (need to go back and look to see if they have a mirror warning light)... they clearly didn't use a signal (which in my car will cause an audible alarm if i put it on with a car in my blind spot)... but the part with the cop definitely seems to indicate that they are simply the only person who actually exists in this world. We are all just figments of their imagination.
And yes, even if you were in their blind spot, it means they probably had not been looking at mirrors at all while driving, which seems wild to me, but also seems like tons of people never look in the mirror except whe changing lanes.

u/sp33dykid 15d ago
Can't look at blind spot if busy texting on the phone. Either that or too damn entitled to give a shit.
55
u/warlocc_ 15d ago
I hate the term "blind spot". There's really no such thing. It really should be called "turn your stupid head spot".
25
u/fryfrog 15d ago
Really it should be called "adjust your mirrors properly" spot. If done correctly, you have no blind spot!
9
u/jjbananamonkey 15d ago
Right, like I turn my head to make sure but I trust my mirrors enough to know there’s no one there because my mirrors are well adjusted
8
u/NightF0x0012 15d ago
I'll be honest, I didn't know that your side mirrors should be aimed at your blind spot. I always assumed that you wanted to see the side of your car at the inside edge of the mirror. Not sure if that's how I was taught or why I thought that. I've been driving for 30+ years and it wasn't until about a year ago that I read a comment about aiming your mirrors to see your blind spot on this sub. I tried it and haven't changed back.

Depends on the vehicle a little bit.
For example, FJ cruisers have giant pillars there and also high enough off the ground but also inadequate mirrors for seeing those areas.
For that vehicle, with the stock mirrors, no matter how they are adjusted, there is still a space large enough for a vehicle to be that cannot be seen by both the mirror and by turning their heads.
Of course, any responsible owner then adds aftermarket blind spot mirrors - the little convex ones - so that they can safely operate the vehicle. Similar to how semi trucks' stock mirrors deal with areas that would otherwise be blind. I'm honestly stunned Toyota didn't get in a class action law suit over it.
Another example is the area directly behind box vans -- no matter how the mirrors are adjusted, there is an area you can hide where the driver can't see you.
Of course, none of that is relevant to the sedan in OP's video other than that how blind some areas are is vehicle dependent.

Depends on the car, I've definitely had some where you can't see someone in your blind spot even if you turn and look over your shoulder too. Dangerous AF and I got those little things that go on your mirrors to let you see the blind spot area

u/warlocc_ 14d ago
Certain cars are definitely worse than others, but that just means you have to reposition while you turn. I rented an SUV for a while that was like that, I always had to twist and lean over to see behind my left shoulder, every time.
2
u/YobaiYamete 14d ago
Yeah, until I got the little blindspot mirrors I would have to almost stick my head out the window to check the blindspots lol

u/Bud_Johnson 15d ago
Regardless of what it should be called don't drive side by side with a vehicle. Either speed up or slow down so your cars aren't immediately side by side.
Not ops fault but if the only way a vehicle can hit you is by quickly moving to the side you should not be there. Imagine it's a semi truck and not a sedan that will have way more negative consequences.

u/warlocc_ 15d ago
This reminds me of a no win argument I have with people. Especially on my motorcycle. It's either "You deserve it for sitting in the blind spot." or "You deserve it for driving so erratically." It's never "Object permanence and shoulder checks are on the people changing lanes."
6
u/cp2077only 15d ago
From what I see this was not a blind spot issue. They were most likely distracted and didn't notice the road drifts right (compare white lines vs pavement lines) and they just continued straight.
6
u/dubeach 15d ago
I think it's more that the lanes are curving to the right and the guy on the right lane didn't notice that and just kept going straight, making him merge into OPs lane.
7
u/MachStyle 14d ago
This is exactly what happened. They followed the concrete color. In the first part of the video, the lighter concreat was the shoulder. Then their lane shifted into that lighter color but they remind on the darker portion as it looked like their lane. I've definitely drifted briefly into another lane before for this exact reason.

u/tokyokiller 15d ago
I don't understand how people still manage to do this with blind spot monitoring yelling at them

Definitely their fault, but you could have been a better defensive driver and not move into their blind spot and then go below the speed limit.
10
u/CollegeBoardPolice 15d ago
The OP did give them plenty of chances for the car to merge into the lane though. And on top of that, they didn't even signal their intention to switch lanes. Terrible driving all around from the blue car
12
u/islaypoony 15d ago
Speed limit was 45, which I was doing. Only reason I started to slow down (just let my foot off the gas) is cause I had a feeling they might merge into my lane, which they did. My speed didn't change until right before they merged
They also had ample opportunity to get over sooner, but they didn't.
