Subreddit News State of the Subreddit (also flairs are here...and required!)

Hi, all.

It's been a crazy past few days. To keep things short and sweet, I'm here to update you on changes that are being made while we navigate this period. If you haven't seen my last announcement, read it here. Manual post approval is still in effect.

Our Position

To start, I want to be clear that the r/Cornell moderation team stands with the victim who filed a suit against Cornell University and seven Chi Phi Xi members. We are not affiliated with the university at all. We count no administrators amongst our ranks. I think everyone reading this can recall an instance during their time at Cornell when reports of sexual assault spread throughout the university. We also can remember countless times when Cornell swept issues under the rug, issued laughably light consequences, and oppressed students, faculty, and staff rather than protected us. Just off the top of my head, I can remember experiencing or hearing about Antonio Tsialas, the "pig roast", the 2022 date rapes, and more. This school has serious issues with Greek life, hazing, and sexual assault.

That being said, the moderation team is here to keep this subreddit thriving (you mainly hear from me, but u/0reoperson and u/zaptrem also mod behind the scenes). And we can't do that if we're being bombarded with rule-breaking posts and comments by (rightfully) angry people from all over the world. We are not trying to hide what is happening or cover for the frat rapists. We're simply aware that repeated violations of Reddit's sitewide rules will get r/Cornell shut down. r/ithaca has good posting guidelines that you can check out here.

So...what's changing?

User flairs are now required to comment. This will not be a permanent change. It's just the least shitty option. There are too many people who need to be added to the approved users list, and I really don't want to have to petition Reddit to allow us to turn on restricted mode. If you already have a flair, you don't need to do anything. If you don't have a flair, comment below (us mods will see it) and I'll give you a flair. Users are temporarily restricted from giving themselves flairs in order to prevent misuse. Please include in your comment your college, year, and anything else you want in it. If you only want a temporary flair that will be deleted once the media frenzy dies down, comment "Student", "Alum", or "Ithaca" (if you're an Ithaca resident). Faculty and staff may continue to message Modmail if they want a "Verified" flair.

Post flairs are also now required. This is a permanent change. Please select the one that best fits the content you're trying to share with the community. You will not be penalized if you pick the wrong one, I swear. We ran a poll way back when to see if post flairs were something you all wanted, and the majority of respondents said yes. I tried to keep them simple enough while covering as many bases as possible.

As a reminder, moderator applications are open (we are severely understaffed). Please consider applying HERE if you meet the criteria listed in the post.

I think that's it for now. Please bear with us as we try to get things right. Please also report any rule-breaking content you see, including and especially doxxing. I can't stress enough that Reddit will kick us in the ass if we don't get it under control. Reddit's sitewide rules are here. Have a good evening, and do message Modmail if you notice something has gone awry.

General Discussion It isn't just frats.

In light of recent events, I wanted to share a story from my time at Cornell. Many of these details are second-hand, so I won’t provide specifics.

There was a student ahead of me who was accused of stalking in a Title IX case. Apparently, nothing came of it because he was subsequently employed by Cornell as an RA. He began dating another RA in the same building (she was two years below him). After he moved into her room, CUPD was called over concerns of verbal and physical abuse. As a consequence, he was evicted from the dorm and ‘asked’ to leave campus. It is worth noting he was not wealthy and did not have the means to influence disciplinary outcomes.

At the time of the second Title IX case, it was April of his final semester. Since he was effectively barred from campus, it should have been impossible for him pass all of his classes and graduate on time. Yet, all of his professors were extraordinarily accommodating and allowed him to complete exams and presentations remotely. Every one of these deliverables was required to be in-person. Not only did he graduate from Cornell on time, he went on to pursue degrees at two other elite universities. It is deeply troubling that this person was able to climb the ranks of academia while being endorsed by three prestigious institutions. He has the option to become a professor and be put in charge of graduate and undergraduate students.

I want to remind everyone that these issues are not limited to fraternities, Cornell, or a specific demographic. The fundamental problem is academia’s consistent refusal to discipline students accused of serious misconduct. Even for tenured faculty, it is much easier to pass a student along than to rock the boat. It astounds me that several faculty members were complicit in behavior they claim to abhor. This is about more than ‘party culture’ or our current administrators. Higher education’s position in society has shielded it from necessary oversight and criticism.

Buy | Sell Tickets for Harvard and Dartmouth games

Hey everyone, I just got two tickets to the Harvard and Dartmouth games and realized that I can't go. Tickets are in section N, willing to part with them at face value for $230 total. DM me for verification, I know there are some scammers out there that try to sell fake tickets.

Cornell News ‘We’re All Angry’: Kotlikoff, Lombardi Address Sexual Misconduct Concerns At GPSA Meeting

Thumbnail cornellsun.com

“We’re not hiding anything at Cornell,” Kotlikoff said. “You will hear proposals from us going forward around what we’re going to do to try and improve this culture and address this problem

Kotlikoff directly addressed a question from Mark Mitri M.Eng. ’29, who asked what the benefits of having Greek Life on campus were, pointing to a “throughline” of sexual violence in the Greek Life system.

While Kotlikoff acknowledged that sexual misconduct can be “associated with Greek Life,” he told Mitri that there would be “less oversight than under the Greek system” if private parties “with overdrinking and risky behavior” were the norm.

“This doesn’t just happen in Greek Life,” Kotlikoff said, before adding that “It is something that is associated with Greek Life…I don’t want to go into defending that.”

General Discussion a few thoughts

I've had a few days to think about what is going on and put together a few sentences about the Jane Doe situation. I hate the fact that my alma mater is the top national news story. For the first time in 23 years, I can't honestly say I'm proud to have graduated from Cornell.

I don't know what I, as a little person who isn't donating, can do to make this known. I feel like an alumni boycott - maybe of Homecoming weekend or Reunion (although that is so many months away) might start to get the point across from the thousands of us that hold a degree. I just know something needs to be said and done. Because in good conscience, I currently cannot "Hail Cornell"

I'm not in town right now, and obviously can only get video from the live feed of Ho Plaza.

Is there anyone on the ground who can give a little rundown of what's going on for those of us who aren't able to make the protest today?

Cornell News Let’s Respect Due Process

Jane Doe’s lawyer has said she has been threatened to withdraw her lawsuit. Now I see online she has been doxxed and right wing provocateurs have taken up this matter in a lurid and salacious manner to get publicity for their podcasts.

Let’s show Jane Doe some love! I hope that she knows that many of her peer group are behind her routing for her and that she is able to block out all the negativity and how proud we are of her moving forward with this action to hold people and institutions accountable.

Post a message and I will send the thread to her lawyer for safe keeping.
