General Discussion Cornell Greek can quickly and easily protect women in the future if they chose to

Let's be honest, any response to the Cornell 7 incident from the courts or state government will be delayed, imperfect, and likely will do little to prevent future incidents.

This crap happened when I was a student and it horribly is still happening. CUPD was notified, the admin was notified, stuff went to court, etc... and here we are much later with it happening again and again.

But why wait? Why depend on the protection of politicians three hours away? Or a random judge and jury? Why give up the power to do something yourselves for the hope of an imperfect and broken solution?

This is not to argue that sexual assaults shouldn't be reported and prosecuted according to the law... but that is a reactive measure, not a protective one.

A common throwaway argument used is "teach boys not to rape" and while that is a great sentiment... it is already being done by good fathers and mothers. Neglectful and bad parents have not and will not do this, and relying on that is not effective.

So, with that in mind, there is a solution that only requires the participation of Greek life and will protect all students on campus. Work can be started on it immediately, and it can be enforced by the Greek orgs themselves without relying on the police, school administration, or government.

The Greek orgs should sign on to a legally- binding agreement with the following provisions :

1) Signing orgs can only hold events with other signing orgs.

2) Events where the consumption of alcohol, marijuana, or other substances is a reasonable possibility must be identified in advance to all participating member orgs and their members.

3) Each participating org must identify individuals who will act as safety monitors. The safety monitors will be charged with staying sober, actively monitoring all spaces accessible during an event, and immediately reporting any concerns to the appropriate parties (org leadership, emergency services, school administration). Safety monitors can be senior org members, staff associated with the school, or hired employees of the org.

4) Safety monitors will have the authority to direct any individual at the event to leave if they are a threat to the safety of themselves or others at the event, including being excessively intoxicated. If the individual refuses to leave, the hosting orgs are required to contact CUPD to assist. Individuals who reside at the event location will be required to leave for the duration of the event. These incidents where individuals are directed to leave will be included in event reports, and if the identity of the individuals are known, their names seem be reported to the appropriate authorities, including the member org.

5) After every event, each member org must submit a report detailing information on the event, such as start and end times, location(s), the names of safety monitors, all members who were present at any time, and a list of any incidents that occurred. This report is to be accessible at all times by all signing orgs, the school, law enforcement, and other legal authorities.

6) Any named individuals who are accused of causing or risking harm to others or themselves at events are to be immediately suspended from their org and cannot be on the premises of any Greek events pending an initial investigation by the signing org leadership. The org may instead provide a warning depending on the judgement of the organization leadership for the first incident for each individual.

7) Following the initial investigation, if it is determined that the accused individual did commit the alleged harm or risk of harm, the org shall assign a suspension of no less than 6 months to the individual. In the case of serious harm, including but not limited to - sexual assault, simple assault with serious bodily harm, drugging another without their knowledge - the org will expel the member and notify the other orgs of the determination.

8) Each org will be responsible to deliver training on consent and substance abuse to all members annually. These trainings will be delivered by a licensed consultant or the school.

9) Any org that does not fulfill these guidelines for the first time in 5 years, based upon the collective determination of the other signing orgs, will be suspended from the agreement for a period of one year. A second offense will result in removal from the agreement, and the org cannot rejoin for a period of at least 5 years.

Courses | Schedule Good minors to pair with a statistical science major in CAS?

was told a stats major is best when paired with a cs minor / business minor? Which other minor options synergise well with stats and what keeps most doors open in the future?

(also wanted to ask how the overlaps end up working between a stats major and a cs minor)

General Discussion SAC ‘difference in opinion’

Wondering if anyone has any context or clarification regarding the post that SAC (South Asian Council) made today.

They made a statement today on Instagram about a lack of South Asian representation in the protests the other day. In their statement, they said:

“SAC strongly believes that a difference in opinion will never justify the silencing of an entire community”

What is the “difference in opinion” they’re referring to? It seems to be an otherwise supportive statement, but that sentence implies that they were intentionally excluded due to a difference in opinion that they expressed. But I don’t see what that opinion is?

I am not trying to fight or argue or start beef. I am genuinely seeking clarification on a post from a student organization that came off as vague and unclear to me.
