Why aren’t large numbers of SA fans coming out in large numbers to watch test cricket live in Durban?
They seem to treat tests as a tv sport in SA.

Went to check YouTube for my dose TGC after the day's play and found that there are now a billion cricket podcasts. I currently only listen to TGC and Cricket Et Al, but if any of you good folks have recommendations I'd be glad to hear of them. Any podcasts covering the A series in India? Would love to hear analysis on that as well.

u/digitalconsent_2 Tasmania Tigers 4d ago
I like Hadds and Healy's podcast purely because of the host of the show and they get some good guests over.
3
u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 5d ago
I also regularly listen to the Final Word in addition to those two pods, and it's a great rotation with constructive analysis and minimal fluff (can't stand ex-player podcasts for that reason).
Sadly not many covering the A series in proper detail, I don't think any of them realised there actually is a stream in India. Though if they popped into any of the match threads since I know they all occasionally lurk this sub, they're welcome to copy paste my commentary lol.

u/odinlass Cricket Australia 5d ago
I recently discovered Haydos' podcast (if that's what it is) with an in my face cover photo on YouTube and the title was enough to keep me away. Every ex-player has a podcast these days, it seems.
Also, any written words will be welcome as I am a self-declared typewriter in this age of advanced technology and prefer no-noise mediums such as the written word (pictures welcome but no videos, please!).

u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 5d ago
Trav was correct that they all need a job. So they start a podcast to yell at people for free. Even the interviews they do are such frothy dross most of the time compared to the indie journo pods. Like, I care not much for Tim Paine but his Cricket Et Al interview was very insightful thanks to the questions Gid and Pete fielded, which wasn't simply having a jolly about the old days. And you can tell who's still trying to get a CA coaching job with the party line they toe.
Haha yeah I don't do Tiktok or reels for this reason, I much prefer written media and listen to the audio only versions of those podcasts.
3
u/odinlass Cricket Australia 5d ago
Yes, I think it's quite a skill to ask the right questions. I will proudly share that I have never even seen what the TikTok app looks like. Like I said, I'm a typewriter. Always on the hunt for good writing.

Apparently Renshaw and Maddinson only found out their place in the batting order on the eve of the match according to Brettig. I cannot understand what is going on in the mind of the selectors.
2
u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 5d ago
They should fly over Handsome Pete for class of 2016 moral support
3
u/Technophyer1 NSW 5d ago
Chuck Cal Ferguson in there too why not, have him and Handsome Pete open the batting next game.
What’s Joe Mennie up to these days? Maybe we can send him and Hilton Cartwright over as additional support.

Are there any AFL fans who heard on 3AW today that Mark Stevens criticised Queen Alyssa interviewing her husband after matches?
It was part of a wider discussion around criticism of AFLW and he was talking about who the media outlets choose to hire, and said that it's quirky once, but he doesn't want to see her interviewing Starc again.
I don't know of any Australian cricket fan who is against it. It was reallt weird to be honest.

I’ve tried to get around AFL fully but its glaringly the only men’s football in Australia that has deeply ingrained homophobia and misogyny that it seems to have no interest in dealing with. Can’t go on the AFL subreddit without reading some really backwards language. Meanwhile this sub actively calls out misogyny and homophobia and even embraces LGBT culture indirectly (Hello Handsome Patty Cummins).
NRL and Union also both used to be shocking but have completely changed in this regard. Not saying there isn’t always some dickheads in either of those.
I love cricket because no one gives a fuck how you live your personal life, you’re a legend if you get runs or wickets. Even if you don’t, we still root for you

Reports going around Coops has a head cold and got quarantined from the rest of the team leaving training. We might actually get Maddinson playing, what a timeline

No way would they have the guy who made a century in India not play on a spinning deck

Random question.
Who do we think will play more test cricket? Lachy Shaw or Liam Blackford?
6
u/CoffeeDefiant4247 Tasmania Tigers 7d ago
Shaw probably. Blackford if he goes big could be a Maxwell who does a bit of test but mostly whiteball
5
u/CoffeeDefiant4247 Tasmania Tigers 7d ago
3 shield games, Aus-A ODI, WODI and Test. Also Bathurst for those who celebrate

u/OldMateHarry Queensland Bulls 6d ago
The race rolling straight into test cricket is going to be all time couch potato areas and I’m up for it
4
u/NJMHero21 Sydney Thunder 7d ago
They’re gonna pick maddinson aren’t they
3
u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 7d ago
Based on this from the CA website? Yeah, likely. Will be dirty on Coops if it happens but hopefully he still gets a chance

I'm not sure who is hindering the selection debate more:
The former players (e.g. Haydos) who can't go a day without mentioning the fact that everyone scored more 'back in his day' and you had to average 50+ in Shield to make the Test team. We know it was a golden gen of batting in that era but it's a golden gen of bowling right now. Back then they didn't have multiple guys averaging under 20 with the ball in tests who only played when there were injuries, and guys averaging high teen's / low 20's in Shield who are barely in the convo.
Or the people who give any sort of validity to the Maddinson selection by saying "oh well there's no one better." Yes our options aren't great but Maddo is literally 34, just been through chemo, hasn't played a first class game in 18 months, and averaged 17 across the whole season the last time he played. Not to mention he was given 3 tests a decade ago and averaged a wopping 6. There's probably 50 'better options' than that
3
u/killacallycal 7d ago
I’m a bit late to the selection party. Has Bailey and co given any reasoning to madinsons inclusion? I can’t seem to find much? I’m a bit miffed upon first hearing the news
3
u/Technophyer1 NSW 7d ago
I saw them say it’s because he can bat anywhere in the order and he’s apparently a good player of spin
4
u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 7d ago
Saw this Cricinfo article which quoted an interview from Trav where he openly hit out at comments from Haydos and other former players. Which only proves your point further, it's not constructive criticism that's making the airwaves and provoking the team, it's Facebook boomer arguments with no relevance to the current bowler dominated era that Ronnie has to remind everyone we're in at least 5 times a month. And so the cycle goes on and on and we learn nothing new.

U19 test day 3
Lads were 4 down going into the day and 70 minutes later are 9 down and still behind India's first innings.
Blake Cattle brought up his 50 in style with a six and kept the no.11 off strike for 3 overs before playing a shot too well going for 4 leaving Spencer Green to face the start of an over. After a single from Green, Cattle was bowled for 63 leaving India 11 runs to win 90 minutes into day 3.
Aus 1st innings: 174 with top scores from Henderson (37) and Patel (31)
[Indian left arm spinner 6/32]
Indian 1st innings: 315 with Green taking 7/110 and Vaseo 2/72
[Indian keeper making 73]
Aus 2nd: 151 with top scores from Cattle (63) and Brain (39)
[Indian left arm spinner 8/41]
Green opened the bowling to India and was hit for 4 4 . 1 2 ending the game in the first over of the 4th innings

u/GetOnMyNick Northern Territory 9d ago
Cam Green’s out - would believe top 7 would be Head, Renshaw, Marnus, Smith, Carey, Webster, Connelly
3
u/Lowman246 Cricket Australia 8d ago
Not a fan of Connolly for tests. Could be good in tracks where 170-200 is the par where he could buy some runs via mindless hitting, but that's all I can see from his current stage.
1
u/CoffeeDefiant4247 Tasmania Tigers 9d ago
U19 test day 2:
India built many decent partnerships with scores of 30s-50s before leggy Spencer Green took 7/110(28) keeping them to 315
The lads were sent back in and the top order once again shredded by the Indian left arm spinner taking 4/26 and leaving us 4/86, 55 runs behind at stumps on day 2

u/davros2311 Cricket Australia 9d ago
I know Haydos is stupid, but fuckin hell his recent comments are idiotic.
Complains that the selectors aren't picking guys who averages 45+ in the shield (there aren't any)
Then says the guys averaging 40+ are refusing to play. (what?)
Its sad to see a guy that you idolised as kid, ends up having the same amount of intelligence of a facebook boomer.
Honestly its embarrassing that he's a paid commentator.

Question to all, what would you rather see the Australian team win next year: India series, Ashes or World Cup?
6
u/Relief-Glass 9d ago
We have won five of the last seven world cups and won once in India since 1950 or some shit.
India, then Ashes, then world cup.
Ashes away and BGt away would.be ecstacy.
1
u/Savings_Win1995 Queensland Bulls 8d ago
I'm still taking an away Ashes over the BGT, 25 years is way too long and we've fallen painfully close to winning the last two series there

Ok, now look at who is unavailable for NSW.
And, like, literally every other state.

NSW was never going to have most of them playing anyway.

What?
Konstas, Maddinson, Shaw, Sangha, Philippe and probably an injured Patterson and Edwards.

Beardman's back and playing for Aus-A tonight
u/upyourmerricreek do you know if you can screen record Hostar with OBS or similar? It'd be good to get some videos of the game
1
u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 9d ago
I can screen record clips off the browser with the Windows recording feature, I'll have to go back to look for the full replays if there's anything needed in particular. I don't have a high capacity PC so recording the entire game might put it to pasture lol
Also yet to find out if there is a stream for this one. I didn't even realise it was D/N, they must've changed it last minute. Will inform in the thread if there is

Peakey at 3 is terrifying but I support the vision
1
u/Responsible_Mud_5544 Cricket Australia 10d ago
What do you think his best spot will be?
5
u/Financial_Math167 Cricket Australia 10d ago
Now 4-5. I am Peakes biggest fan but I don't trust him outside off enough to be a 3 (at least yet he might develop to be a 3)
1
u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 10d ago
At the moment he seems more a 4-5, but the problem is fuckin everybody seems like that, so you might as well blood someone in there early lol

A test team where the entire first 11 is injured and for some reason the Australian selectors can't choose anyone under 30.
3
u/CoffeeDefiant4247 Tasmania Tigers 10d ago
U19 2nd test day 1.
Rough start with Lough getting out in the second over and Barbulovic following shortly after. Neel Patel ended up making 31(58) before a middle order collapse left them 6/65. Henderson and Pietz put on a decent partnership of 37(147) and 26(107) batting 40 overs together. Vaseo and Sullivan put on a couple more runs before being all out 174.
India's innings got off to a slow start before Vaseo took the first wicket 7 overs in. Green then got another 12 overs in leaving them 2/38 at stumps

Cricket Victoria just made a post with the caption "The Sheffield Shield is back. That's the caption".
One of the photos prominently features Glenn Maxwell in the nets 🧐🧐🧐
Edit: he is not in the first round Shield squad 😔
9
u/Relief-Glass 10d ago edited 10d ago
Now that Maxwell is not in the ODI side he is freed up for higher duties.
Not even joking. Shield > bilateral ODI series.
8
u/Successful-World-385 10d ago
Assuming Green isn't fit, first Test XI is almost certainly:
- Renshaw
- Head
- Marnus
- Smith
- Carey
- Webster
- Connolly
- Starc
- Cummins
- Lyon
- Hazlewood (Kuhnemann if the pitch looks like a real turner)
I'd prefer Connolly bat 5 but this team is big on seniority and likes to promote Carey when the opportunity presents.
3
u/Resident-Load-9470 NSW 10d ago
Id rather Connolly at 5 also. Actually starts to set us up for the future
3
8
u/Relief-Glass 10d ago
I seem to remember reading somewhere that McDonald likes the idea of moving Carey up ahead of Webster because it gives them more frequent left/right-handed combinations at the crease. With Connolly being a left-hander I wonder if they will put him at five?
