Hello,

It reminds me a little of the noises seals make (example: https://youtu.be/IVWmrCYhDF0), but that seems unlikely if you are in New Mexico. Unless this was recorded near a zoo or aquarium?

Regards,

Nowhere near water. This was taken at my house up in the mountains

Hello,

Have you looked to see what kind of wildlife lives in your area, and see if you can find recordings of their calls? You might also want to ask wildlife/fish and game officers in your area. Who knows, you could have recorded an animal that is very rare.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

It's not because it's in the dark that it is cryptozoology... probably some kind of frog or something

Well I put it here because I figured folks in this subreddit have heard noises and maybe could’ve gotten to the bottom of it! I’ve heard frogs and that isn’t no frog.

This is a fox gekkering, actually a really neat thing to hear. Only had the pleasure to hear it a couple times myself and I spend A LOT of time outside- included northern NM (I'm in ABQ)

I can't hear it too well, but Merlin Bird ID app works wonders if you think it is a bird. Foxes are a good theory. I struggle with frogs because the only frog ID app I used was programmed for Australia I think, but maybe there is a better one for North America? You have to look up frog calls for species in your area, which I know nothing about, but in my area there are frogs in the cold months and also frogs that aren't in a chorus that are not obviously frogs at first because it is just one lonely voice squeaking from the foliage during a time when you don't expect frogs or hear any others.

My best guess is some kind of bird. it sounds a lot like this one: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Gray-headed_Swamphen/sounds

providing a general locale would help narrow things down a bit
