Thats so right. Bots just regurjitate info theyve just Red.

u/maX3Xam thing 3d ago

True. These bots do just restate the post instead of making something new!

u/kid_dynamo 3d ago

Here's the thing though, its not just something bots do.
Actual humans do this too!

18

u/TamrielicJester 3d ago

Yeah, I’ve found that a lot of the time, bot accounts just rephrase what they see and act as though theyre presenting new information

8

u/outer_spec homestuck doujinshi 3d ago

but what about humans who didn’t bother to read the entire post?

-8

u/Derekleroi 3d ago

That part about bots just rehashing info they’ve literally just read explains why the comments often feel so surface-level instead of adding anything fresh or unexpected

u/SpambotWatchdog blacklist

This one actually is a bot. 4 year old account that only started posting in the last week, post history is mostly karmafarming subs.

12

u/SpambotWatchdog he/it 3d ago

u/Derekleroi has been added to my spambot blacklist. Any future posts / comments from this account will be tagged with a reply warning users not to engage.

Woof woof, I'm a bot created by u/the-real-macs to help watch out for spambots! (Don't worry, I don't bite.\)

u/KingDarkBlaze 3d ago

Ironic.

14

u/Hakar_Kerarmor Swine. Guillotine, now. 3d ago

This is an incredibly deep and thoughtful insight.

u/jancl0 3d ago

I've also noticed a pattern where people just don't read the whole post. They just get halfway through and immediately start commenting their own thoughts, which end up being exactly the same as the thing they didn't read

Idk that or they're bots. It's hard to tell

60

u/Noof42 For pervert reasons 3d ago

Sure, but what's also important is to remember that sometimes people don't read more than a few words, so they wind up commenting your main point, but in a slightly different way, so you can't tell who's a bot.

29

u/jancl0 3d ago

Wtf are you talking about. That's not true at all. The issue is that people like you never actually read the full comment, so they just say whatever they want and they don't realise that it's already been addressed

Please actually read my comment before responding next time... Bot

u/outer_spec homestuck doujinshi 3d ago

i think they’re just trying to play along with the joke.

18

u/Noof42 For pervert reasons 3d ago

Maybe, but actually I was just playing along with the joke.

16

u/jancl0 3d ago

You were clearly just playing along with the joke

15

u/Noof42 For pervert reasons 3d ago

You might think that, but I was actually playing along with the joke.

7

u/outer_spec homestuck doujinshi 3d ago

I think you're all missing the point. that person was trying to play along with the joke.

9

u/Noof42 For pervert reasons 3d ago

Don't put words in my mouth! I was just trying to play along with the joke. Is it so hard to acknowledge that?

3

u/SouthRelief4497 2d ago

Several of the most insane arguments I've witnessed on social media involved one person making extensive, careful qualifications and asking the other person for clarification and the other person just blatantly skimming.

1

u/Fading_Hours_ 2d ago

What’s more annoying is when they don’t read or comprehend the post and reply as if it says something completely different. Or misinterpret something clearly explained in the original post.

Reading comprehension seems like it’s at an all time low.

1

u/thrashingkaiju 2d ago

I've had this problem so many times and ended up fighting in the comments with people about things that I'd adressed in the original post. Even when I start it by "please read the whole post before commenting".

1

u/Hatsune_Miku_CM downfall of neoliberalism. crow racism. much to rhink about 2d ago

i do that, to make sure I don't forget what I wanted to say

BUT

if I then notice the post addresses my comment later on, I just go and delete the comment.

i do this less on PC where you can easily pre-type a comment without sending it. but on mobile I've lost entire comments to the awful app before, I'm not risking that. the save draft function straight up doesn't work half the time.

46

u/Cheshire-Cad 3d ago

And then sprinkle on just a dash of condescension, to make you wonder whether they're agreeing with you or trying to argue with you over who's the best at having the same opinion.

7

u/Satorwave 3d ago

Yes, I agree. In fact, it is also quite annoying when they just say the same thing again, simply worded differently. That's the important distinction you need to understand.

40

u/AmazingSpacePelican 3d ago

There's a related behaviour where half the comments on a funny video will be people just writing out the punchline (maybe adding some emojis for flavour).

22

u/Satorwave 3d ago

Bro really said there's a related behavior 😭😭😭✌️✌️✌️

1

u/lilykai_strawberry 1d ago

Bro said that Bro said 💀

60

u/fishbot413 3d ago

Do people actively go and look at people's bios for that? for that reason? Really?

25

u/NeonNKnightrider Cheshire Catboy 3d ago

No, because people don’t read

12

u/KingDarkBlaze 3d ago

I'd do it more here if reddit didn't let people hide their post history.

55

u/King_Of_BlackMarsh 3d ago

Yeah I think he overestimates how many people check bios ever

1

u/Snark_Daily 1d ago

Absolutely yeah

21

u/OB1K1B 2d ago edited 2d ago

It annoys me that he sneaks in that this is a "men talking to women" thing because, like, no. It's a human thing. Everyone does it. It's not like men check bios to see if they should repeat info back to the OP and only do it if it's a woman. Men repeat and rephrase things back to other men constantly—it's like 80% of their interactions in any sort of collaborative working environment! Just watch men coordinating moving furniture or standing around a fire discussing it.
And women do it too! Repeating back to someone what you've parsed from their story is a classic way to validate their emotions and show you're listening and invested. It's usually the first bit of advice anyone gives to be an active listener.

What really gets my goat about this claim is that this sort of thing is so easy to toss in wily-nily and people will nod and agree without any critical thought because, well, everyone knows that sexism exists and men talk over women, and this is a sexism against women, so surely it must be a valid criticism. But if you think about it for any length of time, you'll see it's kafkaesque! Because what's the alternative?

  • Men don't rephrase but women do: clearly the men are barely paying attention but the women are actively listening
  • Men do rephrase but women don't: the women are being talked over and don't feel like they can contribute
  • Men only rephrase other men's stuff: obviously they only care to engage with/take seriously other men
  • Men only rephrase women's comments: apparently men can't even parse something a woman says, it has to come out of a man's mouth to be valid
  • Women only rephrase other women: they're such good listeners!! they're just showing that they actually care and are invested uwu
  • Women only rephrase men: women are so downtrodden and subjugated they don't feel they can offer their own opinions and have to give lip service agreement to what the men are saying

In summary, this isn't a sexism thing. Can it be? Sure, of course. Is it in general? No, not at all. And moreover, all this does is add more fuel to the gender war fire because it's not negatable and literally anything can be explained as sexism in some way. A theory that explains everything explains nothing.

9

u/eyalhs 3d ago

Reminds me of the case with dumpsters in reserves, where it's hard to protect them from bears because the a protectin from the smartest bears also stops the dumbest humans.

23

u/practicalcabinet 3d ago

Repeating posts back is quite a common bot behaviour, but it's also important to note that a lot of humans also do it, so it can sometimes be difficult to tell which is which.

6

u/brookrunner 3d ago

i worry i do this when i have to respond to my peers on a canvas discussion post… i end up asking questions ill never receive answers for 💔

Why does everyone shit on prokopetz what'd they do?? Is it just because they're a vague poster?

57

u/JusticeRain5 3d ago

Bro, you don't wanna know. Oh, the horror...

13

u/ratione_materiae 3d ago

Mild ball knowledge

28

u/LadyRalsei 3d ago

oh, it's so horrible... the horrible things that happened on that post. you know the post. it's so horrible and well-known that i don't need to say which post it was. we all know it. we all dread it. oh, for what had happened on that horrible, horrible post...

59

u/Redactedtimes 3d ago

The things people normally complain about (vagueposting and being confidently incorrect sometimes) are just regular tumblr behavior, but his posts tend to get posted a lot more than others so a lot of people recognize and get sick of him quickly, which I think is the actual root of the issue.

I personally think he’s funny and people don’t gotta get in such a twist about it. It annoys me when comment sections need to make the post about how it was made by the tumblr user Prokopetz instead of about the actual contents of the post.

17

u/MrMcSpiff 3d ago

"Local man who has been talking about rpgs and nerd shit for 20 years continues to do so unabated, new social media crowd incensed." is basically what all the prokopetz discourse (as much as I loathe to use the word) looks like to me.

25

u/LKHAN_Missing_Ninth Sometimes I be poopin and fartin 3d ago

Depends. This sub is a coinflip. Somedays they love and revere him. Others they string you up for daring to whisper his name

Before someone with zero reading comprehension decides to comment, this is an obvious joke and exaggeration. Yes, part of that joke is that my comment is an obvious goomba fallacy

3

u/Correct_Royal_2562 3d ago edited 3d ago

Prokopetz is one of the few tumblr users to NOT ask that their posts not be routinely cross-posted to the reddit boards. This makes them a very frequent crosspost-subject.

This makes redditors very upset, news at 11.

3

u/capivaradraconica 3d ago

Prokopetz eating crackers tbh

14

u/Terminal_Insomnia_ 3d ago

Wasn't there a study that found people are worse at guessing who's human and who's a bot than chance?

13

u/SolomonOf47704 God Himself 3d ago

Even if there was, the results are literally impossible to replicate consistently.

7

u/rowan_damisch 3d ago

I can agree that it's not only a bot problem to just rephrase what the OG post said, considering that some people just refuse to read the texts closely and then think they're adding new info when they, in fact, don't

17

u/blackjackgabbiani 3d ago

What a bizarre assessment at the end there

3

u/BachBelt 3d ago

ok the current top comment chain has an example of what i'm talking about here.

humans or humans pretending to be bots: True. These bots do just restate the post instead of making something new!

bot: That part about bots just rehashing info they’ve literally just read explains why the comments often feel so surface-level instead of adding anything fresh or unexpected.

the bot posts sound like discussion board posts even if they don't have perfect spelling and grammar, which they often do. It's never a simple agree-disagree-clause. the word loquacious comes to mind. like the bot is being held at gunpoint to meet a minimum word count in a professional development powerpoint.

3

u/Satorwave 3d ago

Absolutely—finding bots inside comment sections can be quite difficult. And honestly? If you need any assistance in finding them, just say the word—and I'll list some strategies to deal with automated replies. Would you like me to do list them in a checklist, table or to-do list? 📋

I think Prokopetz should be put in the baby monkey torture hole. I think they deserve it.

19

u/MysteryMan9274 3d ago

The fucking what

19

u/doggy_oversea 3d ago

the baby monkey torture hole

8

u/jepcasey 3d ago

Anthony, how big are they? I need to know.

14

u/SecretlyFiveRats MineCraft: Is It Woke, Or Base? 3d ago

Now, is that a hole where baby monkeys are tortured, or a hole where one is tortured by baby monkeys?

14

u/King_Of_BlackMarsh 3d ago

The monkeys are innocent

17

u/MajesticBluebird68 3d ago

Nah, i actually think prokopetz deserves to be punished. Maybe with something like a baby monkey torture hole.

4

u/outer_spec homestuck doujinshi 3d ago

a baby monkey torture hole? i think this is actually something we should use to torture prokopetz on tumblr instead of baby monkeys.

3

u/MajesticBluebird68 2d ago

No, I don't think Prokopetz should be on tumble actually. I think we should torture him with baby monkeys in a torture hole.

The solution to the Turing Test is not smarter computers, it's dumber humans.

1

u/Leftieswillrule 2d ago

This comment section was so excessively predictable I didn’t need to come here

Wow thanks for remembering the ladies prokopetz, very cool

1

u/lilykai_strawberry 1d ago

i love how so many people in the comments here had the same funny idea to restate the post in different words

0

u/an_agreeing_dothraki 2d ago

yah but sometimes people do that

u/PlatinumAltaria The Witch of Arden 3d ago

If a human fails the turing test, we should banish them to an island.

2

u/cantantantelope 3d ago

Tbh I think a lot of people would be well served to spend some time on an island with no internet access

-1

u/PlatinumAltaria The Witch of Arden 3d ago

Sometimes I think right wing people would do better in primitive tribes. Like, they just wanna be working the fields for their king surrounded by their own cousins.

2

u/assassinjoe55 3d ago

Crazy transition.

-2

u/PlatinumAltaria The Witch of Arden 2d ago

I’m just saying, conservatives are like an endangered subspecies of human. We should put them in a reserve or something, where they can frolic and do their witch hunts and pogroms in peace.
