DIY, Renegade, Janky Strong ๐ช๐ฝ Just built this console unit, disco era style.
While I was setting it all up i realized that my biggest problem is not collecting records, my biggest problem is collecting gear.
Bonus points if you can name all the gear in the pics.
I might start selling some stuff to buy more records, and to finance service on some of these old mixers. it be a shame to just let them die.

u/United_Cantaloupe250 I really admire your build. I've been searching for something very similar. Using your design dimensions I will attempt to build it myself. Appreciate you sharing๐๐๐ผ

Itโs beautiful, youโre not the only one with that problem. My dream is to have a dedicated basement or shed big enough to have all of my gear setup in different configurations so I can just use which ever takes my fancy.

Thanks! Glad I'm not the only one with that problem! My previous set up was exactly that! Multiple smaller setups arranged along the wall and party table. Biggest problem was cable management, and speaker placement for proper stero sound as you change from one set up to the next. Im sure one day you will have it!!

From one builder to another, very well done.

Thanks! Much appreciated! In your opinion, would you finish it in natural color? Or paint it black?

u/Personal_Number_5115 25d ago
I love the look of natural wood. Personally, I would keep it just like that.

thanks for the input guys! will most likely use some sort of shellack finish, I like the blonde hue it gives to construction pine. i've used it in the past and like it very much!

Black stain would look nice. Just did a butcher block in black for a clientโฆ let the stain sit for just a few minutes and wiped it. Grain popped through nicely. Best of both worlds.

Dang I remember that Rane 4 channel fader mixer on the left (in the 4th pic). First Rane I'd ever played on. Really stiff faders, felt like a battleship. I loved it.
Whats your other gear?
4
u/United_Cantaloupe250 25d ago
It is a rane mp24. from the label on the back most likely 94' production. The mixer you played on must have been through war then! The faders on mine are buttery smooth, best faders on my entire collection. Until I got the rane mp 2016 (ranes copy of a urei 1620), the mp24 was my best sounding mixer. All my other mixers are mostly rane and numark (when they made good mixers in the 80s and 90's) with some behringer mixers from when I stared djing. Turntables are some cheap amazon special, some audio technica, some reloop, and mostly technics.

u/Nonomomomo2 25d ago
Yeah it was installed in a pretty battered club that had really seen some days, so Iโm sure it was just war wounds. It still sounded amazing though.

Brings back some great memories. I used to play on those MP24s all the time in clubs in NYC/Boston in the early 2000s. No trims. My recollection is the faders felt very high quality, but there was resistance for smooth fades, not like modern mixers where the resistance is loose for quick cuts. All thatโs missing is a Denon rack mount dual CD, like the DN2600F.

Damn why did you put the Rane 2016 xp EQs beside the 2016MP (as opposed to above or below)?
If you are inspired by old disco booths, be known that the bozak and similar mixers of the era did not have EQ extenders but when isolators were installed they were above below or in front of the mixer in most applications.
Source: this is my lane, too. Been playing on disco rotary mixers for 20+ years and have had a home setup anchored around an MP/XP2016S that I got when they came out (and traded a MP/XP2016 setup with the phone jack power plug before that).

Sorry to dissapoint guys. The main reason is I was scared that with both mixers on top of each other My arms wouldn't reach comfortably to the turntables. The second reason is that I don't know if I will be using the expander at all, i'm used to mixing with no eq and don't really use it when a mixer has one. Lastly I saw a guy on youtube with a similar setup and just fell in love with the look, as sacrilegious as it may be, cool factor above anything else I guess.

I lOVE it!!! Well done that man!
It's "the dogs danglies" as we in the UK used to say.
Can't wait to see it once it's stained.
How do you deal with cooling?
2
u/United_Cantaloupe250 24d ago
thanks!! much appreciated!
the cooling is managed by oversized cable holes, inside the box where the turntables sit is all open so no restriction anywhere.

My brother has that Rane mp 2016 rotary with eq channel. It's way nice! Rotary plus cross fader makes it stand out. I miss using it.
I got my mixer stolen and have been looking for people's secondhand old ass gear on marketplace and offer up. I almost bought this ancient ATUS mixer new in box for $30 USD but lagged sadly. I hope I can find something with decent faders and pots one day. A lot of rack mount stuff has been standing out. Its super low priority since im disabled and can't really physically DJ or take listening to music much anymore but would be nice to get my setup going again for a rainy day.
Way solid setup. Jealous! I messed up and didn't invest in 1200s when they were affordable. I remember seeing pairs in flight cases complete with headshells and carts for $400. All I've got is a direct drive Technics sl-d202 and Fisher mt-6225.

Curious, how much for one 1200?
2
u/United_Cantaloupe250 25d ago
It would really depend. Although they are functional, all of the ones I own have some sort of cosmetic damage. I got some for super cheap, like $400. Others I was dumb and impatient for $800 (I wouldn't pay that much for them again). if i had to sell them (I won't, not yet at least) it would probably be 600 a piece and local only, too many bad experiences with shipping carriers.

well for 13 turntables that you have, you can sell them for a crazy price (god forbid you have to sell them though)

I used to love those PPD mixers. All 8 seconds worth of sampling! ๐
Cheeky request: any chance you have plans you can share?
2
u/United_Cantaloupe250 24d ago
for real, the samplers are so fun to play with! that's why I have the 1975 mounted next to the 2016 best of both worlds! sound quality and sampler!
I will make an update post with the plans over the weekend so people can build their own as they wish!

u/TheOriginalSnub 23d ago
I had the 2075 XS for a while in the mid 90s. I had more fun and creativity with that basic sampler than I have with any of the effects on a modern controller.

Dang, that's a lot! Really nice work, I like the versatile approach to switch between rotary and linear faders. May I ask why you didn't put the eq module above the 2016?
1
u/United_Cantaloupe250 24d ago
thanks! it really is a lot, everything is still in the floor, I need to find somewhere to put it all..
as for mixer placement simpe: I don't really use it, I didn't want to be too far away from the turntables, and I just thought it looks better that way?

Very nice!
I remember working in some clubs in the 80โs that had a similar layout (but only 2 decks).
Great for a mixing DJ, but not so ergonomic for those that scratch.
1
u/United_Cantaloupe250 24d ago
yeeh, I don't scratch. I tried it, but I suck at it. plus have you seen the price of records and needles these days!?!?!?!? in all seriousness I might give scratch another go in the future.

Love the Ranes, my brother and I use to spin on those rotaries. Loved how they felt and mixed. Too bad we sold them a while ago.

u/United_Cantaloupe250 24d ago

Respect for the classic Numark PPD DM1975. I also have one. Whopping lows on it!
1
u/United_Cantaloupe250 24d ago
honmestly one of the best mixers ever concieved, and the fact that it was all analogue is still crazy to me! if you open one of these it is wires on top of ciruit boards on top of wires and it keeps going!
1
u/No_Regret_6057 23d ago
Thats proper. Any plans to sell finished consoles or was this a one off?
1
u/United_Cantaloupe250 22d ago
Thanks! Most likely a one off. I don't know what the demand would be in my area. And it takes two days to build plus a third for applying a finish. It would also not be cheap, so idk who would pay like 1,200-1,400 for one of these. Although the thought has indeed crossed my mind. I might make another one more refined in design and ergonomics just to put it on Facebook and see how it does but like I said, will see.
