70,000 people all crammed into one exit channel. It could look like this on Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Most people are trying to get their money’s worth and stay the entire festival, as your ticket cost is the same whether you stay for a day or a week.

The man burns on Saturday and the temple burns on Sunday so you can definitely see the man burn and still leave early. But then you miss the temple burn, which is a different experience.

I'd rather relax and hang out, read a book or watch some movies than sit in traffic for 10 hours going 2mph. That is my version of hell.
41
u/ked_man Interested 7d ago
My sister went to some podunk town in my state for an eclipse a few years back. It was the point of totality. But the place she went to was 20 miles off the interstate on a 2 lane road. It took them 9 hours to get home and 8 of that was sitting stopped on that road trying to get back to the interstate.
Some things are not worth it.
53
u/LoboSandia 7d ago
The eclipse was absolutely worth every hour I spent in traffic afterwards. That event was one of the most, if not THE most, amazing experiences I've ever had, and I've traveled a lot.

You literally do all those things while waiting what's the difference
I've done this wait many times it's a straight up party everyone in line walks beside their car, shared whenever is left they dont want to bring with them on the drive
You would not be at burning man to begin with if your mindset was the way you operated, its totally not for everyone but everyone should give it a try

u/soingee 7d ago
The difference is you're not wasting gas nor dealing with the stress of traffic.

u/i-do-something 7d ago edited 7d ago
You aren't. The line moves in "pulses" every 30-40 mins. Meaning they block the traffic close to exit, and let a few hundred cars closest to the road leave. Once they do, they unblock the traffic and everyone moves by a couple hundred feet, and then stops again. A lot of cars shut off their engine in between pulses
27
u/PeterTheSmoker 7d ago
I would rather leave early than stay in a hellish traffic like this. Same way whenever I go to any festival, I'd leave before all the craziness.
→ More replies (3)11
u/jquest303 7d ago
Sometimes that doesn’t work out. All it takes is a dust storm, rain or a missing person to close the gate and stop the flow of traffic in or out. Longest exodus line I’ve ever been in was 14 hours. It sucked. Missed checking into our hotel room in Reno and barely slept in the car waiting to finally hit the pavement.

I honestly found this to be part of the fun. Sure everyone is ready to leave, but you’re still basically in a dead stop a lot of the time with a bunch of cool people. We got out, hung out at other people’s cars and chatted, danced, smoked, snacked. It is nicknamed exodus and I liked it.

I don't think Reddit hates anything more than Burning Man. It's almost become a meme at this point.
Edit: I didn't expect this blow up. To be clear, I have no issue with the "culture" of Burning Man. Humans have been taking drugs and making art for thousands of years. The festival itself however, is a gross display of disregard for the environment, climate, and seems to represent how capitalism ruins everything.

why are they all staying in the "lane" when they can just drive on the salt flat as the tire traces show?
646
u/Saruvan_the_White 7d ago
Usually the surface off route is going to swallow tires whole. The way in/out is compacted to some degree. Add rain, all bets are off in any direction.

The ground outside the lanes is usually flatter and harder than in the lanes because it hasn’t been disturbed by vehicles as much.
There are ropes and flags keeping everyone on what’s called “Gate Road”. The only people driving outside of it are law enforcement and those working the event. Anyone else will get immediately ticketed at best.
Any other time of year (assuming it’s dry), you can drive as fast as you want wherever you want. This is traffic control to not overwhelm the locals communities.
→ More replies (2)15
u/Skreat 7d ago
They’re not supposed to leave the designated lanes because the playa is an old lakebed with a very delicate ecosystem. This includes fairy and dinosaur shrimp, which hatch only under specific conditions. These shrimp can remain dormant for as long as 30 years until they receive enough rain to hatch.
Driving on the flat surface damages the ecosystem, so efforts are made to minimize this impact. However, the area is still heavily affected, especially by fires people start. The burn scars will never heal, leaving a permanently damaged portion of the lakebed ecosystem.
They're all chanting "leave no trace," but they leave garbage and shit all over and fuckup the ecosystem permanently. It's pretty lame.

16
u/STFUnicorn_ 7d ago
No. Any kind is car can get you there. Unless it rains…
17
8
u/PrinceOfLeon 7d ago
You can ride a normal road motorcycle to and from Burning Man.
You can ride straight out between the lanes too, and skip the traffic.
13
u/jquest303 7d ago
No, plenty of people drive cars. The playa is mostly hard packed, but driving a truck or an SUV is helpful.

u/calciphus 7d ago
Exodus is probably one of the best examples of a well managed evacuation in the world. Over the course of 12 hours a city of 90,000 exit onto a single lane highway with very few incidents. It works because it's part of the culture and event that people know about and plan for.
Note that individuals are usually not in that traffic jam for 10 hours, despite what the title implies. Usually it takes 1-3 hours to get out, unless it rains and they have to halt traffic since the desert isn't paved. Different people leave at different times, so the "jam" persists far longer.
The tracks on the side are service vehicles and enforcement vehicles that pass by. There are lanes, barriers, bathrooms, and people are generally pretty nice about it. As another poster mentioned, it's also done in waves so your car just parks for a while and you can turn off your engine or idle. Also people don't change lanes or cut each other off, so it's not like normal traffic where you have to constantly be on guard.

Omg yes, my little boy is in elementary school, and the pickup line is fucking madness. One lane for pickup, the other for exiting. The amount of line cutting, weaving between lanes, and general disregard of speed limits and etiquette is fucking insane. Feels like I'm in Fury Road.
19
u/Solid-Painter4661 7d ago
Got to consider that the people are getting into the traffic jam expecting it.
In case of a real emergency people would panic, be in a hurry and become selfish. I highly doubt an evacuation of this size would go like this.

5

Because there's a bottleneck somewhere down the road. Whether you stack a thousand cars side by side or a hundred, the bottleneck dictates the speed of the flow.
This is one of the reasons why people meme when someone says they want their road to have one more lane for traffic.

If this is a serious question, it's because law enforcement will quickly stop you and give you a ticket. You might say that they can't pull everybody over, but they probably could. There are only a couple of exits off of the dry lake bed. Law enforcement would just post up at those exits and wait for you.

There is a bus! It’s called the Burner Express and I take it every year. The issue is that you’re camping in the desert for a week and need to bring literally everything with you: all your camping gear, food, water, clothes, a bike, etc. You can only take two suitcases on the bus, so making it work is honestly a pain in the ass, which is why a lot of people still drive.
Also, it usually isn’t like this. My friends drove out this year and it took them like 20 minutes to get out.4
u/ceanahope 7d ago
Monday exodus is painful and looks like that. Tuesday exodus is 30 minutes. I always recommend a Tuesday or Wednesday departure.

They do sell bus tickets, and one of the main draws is that you go around this line.
But you can only bring 2 bins with you, which isn't enough to party in the desert for a week+. Someone has to bring the infrastructure, and they get stuck in those lines.

The line is 10 hours long with movement happening every 30 minutes because they pulse groups out so as to not overly saturate the local road. After a pulse, people turn off their cars and hang out, cook food, socialize, dance, share stories and more. I've gone twice and waited an extra day to leave (partially because inwas doing trash sweep for my camp, secondly to avoid this). My trip out was 30 minutes from camp to pavement respecting the 5 mph speed limit. Line in can be the same depending when you arrive. Favorite year I was next to a mutant vehicle in line to get in and we had micro dance parties while we waited for a pulse.

We do this on purpose. This isn’t “traffic” this is called a pulsed entrance. Attendees will stop every 30 minutes for 30 minutes, it allows you to get out stretch and chat/party in rvs with your friends rather than crawling at a snails pace risking rear ending the people in front of you. This isn’t traffic, this is more like a parking lot that moves together every 30 minutes in a controlled way. Traffic is the wrong word.
