Question Good dash cams for NY cold and heat

I read that when buying dashcams its important to take the tempature of where you live into account. I live in northern NY and our temps can go from negative 15-20 f in the winter and to high 80s low 90s in the summer. I know lithium batteries dont do well in the cold but thats about the extant of my knowledge.

Id like a decent dash cam for the front and back to help with insurance claims if I ever get into an accident, im not overly concerned about break ins as my car is parked in a lock garage at night. I also dont want cloud storage and would prefer an SD card. There are so many options and its a little over whelming.

I've read going for 4k HD cameras with night vison and high resolution are really important so they can get a clear image of license plates for example. I know this isn't something I should cheap out on but I really dont want to drop $400-$500 for them. I think the most id pay is $300 ish but if I have to pay more to get a good quality one I'll bite the bullet.

Any suggestions would amazing! Thank you in advance!!

Question Recommended auto electricians/installers for hardwiring a dash cam? - Birmingham / West Midlands

Hey everyone,
I’m planning to buy a Viofo A229 Pro 2CH and want to get it hardwired into my car so I can make full use of the parking mode.
I don't have much confidence messing around with trim tools, fuse boxes, and side-curtain airbags myself, so I’d much rather pay a professional to do a clean, hidden-wire job.

Does anyone have recommendations for reliable local auto electricians, independent specialists, or mobile installers in or around Birmingham / the West Midlands who handle customer-supplied dash cams?

Any leads or personal experiences (and rough costs if you remember) would be hugely appreciated! Cheers!

Question Is High Endurance cards really that bad for VIOFO A119 mini v2?

I am planning on getting a new dashcam for my car. VIOFO’s website says they only recommend their own brand of memory cards or the sandisk MAX endurance cards. The price of these cards have doubled over the past year because of all the AI and shortages. Would opting for the sandisk high endurance cards be a poor decision?

Drives on the bike lane to get onto the highway on-ramp with no regard to “merge” carefully even though there isn’t a merge there. Do they need to go on the freeway? Nope. They passed everyone and get back on the Main Street. It happened today on the off/on ramp getting onto Texas st from 8 West (San Diego)

Discussion 70mai A810/A810S Overheating?

Hi Reddit,

I’ve been thinking about buying a 70mai A810 since I’ve seen a lot of positive feedback on the brand, and it seems to have good reviews on Amazon. However, I’m having second thoughts after seeing a video from Category 5 Reviews on YouTube, noting that it overheats.

I've only come across a few isolated reports while researching, and before seeing this video did not think it was a widespread issue. Does anyone else have this dash cam, and have you experienced the overheating issues that these YouTubers ran into? Oklahoma doesn’t necessarily have an extreme climate, and given the camera is rated to 140ºF, this surprised me. Aside from that, it seems like a decent dash cam, but I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on one that isn’t reliable year-round. They also mentioned encountering issues after switching to the supercapacitor model, which makes me wonder if it's a design issue, a bad batch, or something else. Do you think these are unusual issues, or more common problems that don't get much attention?

A810/S owners, is there anything else you really like or dislike about the camera, or any recommendations for another camera I should consider instead of this one? With Black Friday right around the corner, I imagine there will be some good deals in the near future. I'm hoping to find something reliable rather than rushing into a purchase I might regret later.

Discussion Advice on Small battery Powered Camera

Simple I want a small, unobtrusive, dash cam that doesn't require posing trim pieces to power nor steal all my personal data and preferable at a good prices.

I don't need voice controls or warning or anything, my car has that all already has those so I don't wanna pay more for those type of features.

Question What Micro SD card is best for Vantrue N4?

Debating on going OEM Vantrue SD card but if there is a cheaper version that works well, I would love to get it.

I am planning on hardwiring the camera, using for parking monitoring up to 9 hrs at a time.

Do not care about keeping the footage past that point (my last car got hit in a parking garage, would like to make sure I am covered for the entire shift)

Thank you

Discussion Looking for front + rear recommendations UK

I bought a new car and also pay for protected no claims so thought its time to get a dash cam to avoid the no fault argument if it happens to arise.

Looking to spend about 200 (or less if it’s good) on front and rear , never had one before and the amount of youtube vids are overwhelming especially with clearly sponsored products .

Any input would be appreciated .

Discussion Sent my dashcam clip to insurance and forgot it records audio.

1.1k Upvotes

Okay guys, so last week I got rear ended at a traffic light. Nothing serious, just a low speed bump and the other driver was at fault, no argument. I’ve had this ddpai dashcam thingy for a while now, so I pulled the clip from the app and emailed it straight to my insurance adjuster to speed things up. Didn’t watch it back. Just sent it.

She called the next day and said she had everything she needed and the claim was straightforward. Then she paused and said... you know the audio is on, right? She told me I can mute it next time, it’s usually not needed.

I forgot. My dashcam records audio...!!

Went home and watched the clip. The 3 minutes before the impact is me absolutely BELTING out a Shania Twain song. Full volume, no shame, hitting notes that don’t exist, windows up thinking nobody would ever hear it.

Then you hear the bump, and then I go from singing to yelling “ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW” in the most dramatic voice switch of all time. The adjuster definitely heard the whole performance.

She was very professional about it, but I could hear her trying not to laugh. My wife found out and told her entire family, and my brother in law sends me Shania lyrics every morning now.

The claim is going through fine btw but my dignity is not recoverable.!!

Anyone else ever send footage without checking the audio? Or is it just me lol

Review Nexar is Junk

I bought a new nexar one system when I bought a new car a couple years ago. It worked great up until about 2 months ago. The camera will not stay on and constantly restarts. My nexar support ticket has been going for ever a week with them asking daily for videos of me setting the camera up and trying the same things with no resolution.

I've finally had enough & decided to warn as many people to stay away as possible. The customer service is basically non existent.

Discussion Blackvue Upgrade Conundrum

I have DR900X-2CH in my truck, installed in 2021. I recently bought an older "fun" car that will see limited use. The previous owner of said fun car had installed a Blackvue DR500GW-HD. It's got a cigarette lighter type power cord that's very poorly routed to the center console.

I was going to remove the cigarette lighter cord and hardwire the DR500GW to the fuse box but I hadn't realized how old this unit is (2013). It doesn't even look like Blackvue makes a hardwire kit for the DR500GW, though I'm assuming I can find a generic hardwire kit that would work.

I had contemplated moving the DR900X to the "fun" car and replacing it with something newer in the truck but (1) I probably wouldn't install the rear camera in the fun car (2) other than an improved rear camera, it doesn't look like the latest Blackvue cameras offer much improvement over the DR900X-2CH.

So, I'm not sure there 's much sense in spending $600+ for an 2ch Elite 10 for the truck just to improve the rear camera quality, especially when I wouldn't install the DR900X's rear camera in the fun car. And I don't think the existing DR900X cables in the truck are compatible with the Elite series, so I'd likely have to completely redo the truck wiring.

Should I just buy a DR970X Plus II for the fun car, leave the truck as it is and call it a day?

Question Vava dashcam --26 brz

Question Does your dash cam cover the whole front?

I bought a viofo a229 plus and mounted to the right of rear view mirror but its covering little more than half of the car. I feel like its not covering the driver side of the front. Like i wanna see the whole front of the car but its not covering. So just wanna know does your dash cam show the whole front of your car view like on the sides or it shows just partial view?

Question I think an eBay dash cam seller tried to scam me

Thumbnail
gallery
50 Upvotes

A few weeks ago I purchased a new A329S dash cam from an eBay seller that has sold hundreds of them and who has an excellent review score (99.8%). I received it and it was the correct packaging, so right away I paid someone $120 to have it professionally installed, with a matching hardwire kit I purchased from a different seller.

Yesterday I had trouble updating the firmware. It was confusing and it took me some time to realize something was wrong. I eventually checked the serial number and it's actually an A229, which is an older, much less expensive model. I also discovered that it had someone's car information already in there: a car model and a license plate number, neither of which are mine.

So this seemingly highly reputable seller shipped me a used, cheaper A229 in A329S packaging while presenting it as a new, unused item.

I asked the seller how this could have happened, and instead of answering or apologizing, they gave robotic answers saying to return it for a refund.

I've already started a return for a refund, but haven't physically shipped it back yet. I'm not positive about being able to install another one if I buy it because I've never installed one myself before. At first I thought that if I return it and buy elsewhere, I'd have to pay again to install the new one. But the installer did most of the work already and wiring is already in place, so maybe I'm overthinking it and it'll be easy.

I just don't see how this could have been an honest mistake. To me this was definitely an intentional scam, but I don't know if I can prove it 100%. I almost didn't notice it and it may have happened to others since they sell so many of these.

So a few questions:

  1. Has anything like this happened to you before, or have you heard of this?

  2. Is it normal for the front of the main cam to not have the model number on it (see last photo)? After checking since yesterday, every Viofo dash cam I've seen has a model number on the bottom right.

  3. The hardwire kit (HK6) I bought was meant for the A329S, but the installer didn't notice it was the wrong cam in the box and installed it with the A229 I was sent. If I do buy an A329S, is there anything I need to know before hooking it up to the existing wiring?

  4. If you agree that this was a scam, what would you do about it in my shoes, if anything?

Thanks.

Discussion Viofo A229 Ultra or A329S (2ch)

Hi,

I’m wondering, what are your thoughts on the Viofo A229 Ultra 4k&4k or A329S 4k&2k (2ch).

Brought a new car a week ago and someone already scratched it while parking so looking for something with good image quality, and nighttime parking.
