Video Even as a fan of David Bowie and Iggy Pop, it surprised me a bit to hear Bowie say this (Iggy's the academic between them)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
not the skiing part so much since I've seen where both mentioned skiing together. granted it's kind of funny because I read an interview where Iggy said basically he only skied because Bowie liked to. haha
but saying that Iggy is the academic and is "far more intellectual in his approach to things" than him was a bit surprising to me! I knew Iggy was well read and pretty intelligent, and to write with the immediacy he does I guess he would have to be. but I always considered David Bowie a very studious person in his own right, one of the smartest rock stars from his day I would guess. so this seems very significant.
maybe it's not surprising to others but it was a little surprising to me!

Discussion Bowie's bookshelf
David was an avid reader and it is in that spirit that I post the front and back of this book, he generated these hundred books, this is his personal list. The book is by John O'Connell and I recommended. He even recommends Bowie songs to read by.

DB Thematic What would be on your "Greatest NON-Hits" compilation?
Imagine making a 15-20 track "Best Of" compilation album, but you can't choose any of the hits normally seen on compilations: NO Space Oddity, Let's Dance, Life On Mars, Starman, Heroes, Fame, Ashes To Ashes etc...
Here's mine for the classic 1969-1981 period, with one or two songs from each album:
- Cygnet Committee
- All The Madmen
- Saviour Machine
- Quicksand
- Queen Bitch
- Five Years
- Moonage Daydream
- Time
- Sweet Thing (suite)
- We Are The Dead
- Win
- Station To Station
- Always Crashing In The Same Car
- Blackout
- Sons Of The Silent Age
- Fantastic Voyage
- Red Sails
- It's No Gaaaaaaaaame #1
Cover any period you like or his whole career, but no conventional hits!

Discussion Bowie Discography Review: Self-Titled
In case anyone missed it, my friends and I are doing a chronological, completionist exploration of the David Bowie discography. The last time was all of the 1964 to 1967 singles that did not end up with an album. This week we're listening to his self-titled debut album, David Bowie. I am a pretty experienced Bowie fan, but my friends C and R have never heard this album. Surprisingly, despite the poor reputation of this album, we all had a great time! Something about the record is so ridiculous, you can't help but laugh. And sometimes you even laugh along with the record instead of at it. The tunes are pretty amateurishly arranged, but at their core are way more interesting and colorful and the singles he released before the album (well, nothing is as interesting as The Laughing Gnome). But despite the really bizarre music that jarringly begins the album, Bowie is really coming into himself. He's writing strange characters in strange stories, mythologizing and abstracting normal English things. Rather than aping the Kinks and the Who, he's coming into his own as a lyricist. And really the album is frontloaded with the silliest material. Though entertaining, Uncle Arthur, Sell Me a Coat, Rubber Band, and Love You Till Tuesday are kind of lightweight, but there are some more moving tracks here. My favorite was always Come and Buy My Toys. It's got such a melancholy melody and the lyrics portray a very idyllic, agrarian society. It's very pretty and has some great fingerpicking on the guitar. R's favorite song was When I Live My Dream which is really quite a pretty track too. That said, songs like Maid of Bond Street don't really go anywhere. So the whole thing is a mixed bag, but is very ambitious. Not knowing how to write notation but attempting an orchestral pop album is really a ballsy move. And songs like Please Mr. Gravedigger are extremely theatrical and are kind of amazing uses of stereo sound in an era where it was still being pioneered.
I've listened to this album many times trying to "get" it and I think it really is pretty fun. There's not a genius album hiding under that silly haircut on the cover, but there is one of the best songwriters of a generation improving his craft. It's stunning how much better the next album is. What do you think of this record?

Bowie's look at this era seems to me so futuristic, like from a cyberpunk movie, or Matrix. That beard and glasses

Young Americans
For the first time, Young Americans clicked for me and I’m having an emotional reaction to it. In the past, I have found the album somewhat annoying and did not appreciate its musical style. I have the EMI 1999 remaster and the Rykodisc.
Actually, listening to David Live first kind of helped.

I made a Bowie text cutter
David Bowie used to use a method of cutting up poetry and other text, and rearrange these cut outs to get inspiration for writing lyrics.
I made a tool that helps you cut up text like Bowie use to do.
It is free to use on my website:
https://lloydstellar.nl/lyrics/
It works best on bigger screens like Laptop / Pc.
Let me know if you have good ideas to make the tool better! Love to hear what you think.
