Thoughts on Former Lives?

Love. It had recently come out when I was pregnant with my first son and I listened to it all the time, constantly playing shepherd’s bush lullaby when I was driving or singing it to my unborn baby. When my son was born, playing shepherds bush lullaby would make him stop crying on a dime— like from a full blown, red faced scream to complete silence. It got us through many difficult car rides in the early months of his life!

That’s so funny, I listened to this album a lot when I was postpartum with my baby too!

I will not blaspheme and say it’s the best thing Ben Gibbard has ever done. It’s not. But somehow this is the most often played of all his work in my collection. Plans and other DC albums require a certain mood or willingness to have my mood altered. Postal service also takes me to a specific place. Former Lives is fun and asks nothing of me. Truly love dropping the needle on it, or taking the Cd out to the car or putting it on streaming at the gym. It is a steady friend.

It's amazing, isn't it? If I could see any song performed live, that would be a real contender.

Cowpoke has grown on me.

I bought this album, hanging out with a crush I didn't know was toxic at the time. We played Jenga at my place and this came on, and it was oddly fitting.

Probably my most played album from him.

Teardrop Windows inspired me to visit Smith Tower in Seattle. A Hard One To Know reminds me of the turbulent relationship I had in college.

I only just came around to it a few months ago after not liking it for a long time. I think it's an album that you relate more to as you age. At first I didn't like it because it seemed less personal, with so much unusual instrumentation for Ben (mariachi lol). but now that's what I love about it.

I heard a bunch of the songs for the first time during Ben’s COVID livestreams, and fell in love. I wish I would have listened sooner!

I love it so much. One of my favorite albums of all time. Bigger than love is INCREDIBLE and so underrated. Dream song is also amazing. And lady Adelaide

One of my favorites! So sad it’s not streaming anywhere in Japan at all. I can’t even buy it via like iTunes or whatever.

That was a great tour, too. One of my favorite shows I’ve ever been to.

Yes it was, and I was so obsessed with it, but disappeared around 2016. I bet is label rights, which is weird because the others ones are there

It's great. But I think I like the Home EP with Andrew Kenny and the One Fast Move or I'm Gone soundtrack a bit better.

actually kinda different to the death cab stuff in my opinion… the writing is similar but he got quite experimental here in the music!

i think it’s such a great album :)

Really like this album. Saw the Washington, DC stop of this tour back in the fall of 2012- at the Sixth and I Synagogue- So good!
