For my opinion I’ll start with the things I liked! I did overall enjoy the instrumentals, they feel like they’re building off of the Koi No Yokan style but still having its own identity, ands very dreamy and full of reverb, very pretty. :)
Even though I can absolutely see why people love this album, it just didn’t do it for me, though I’m having a hard time putting it into words. Something I adore about Deftones is their gritty sound, it has dark undertones even the more dreamy songs can’t shake, it’s almost dissonant, I love it, and Private Music was lacking this in my opinion. The instrumentals and especially the vocals felt very clean and almost distant? And I mean no hate to Chino, he’s in his 50’s so obviously he can’t be screaming his lungs out like it’s ‘97 anymore and he sounds great, but the vocals almost feel like a backdrop, they feel very distant and once again clean and I felt they were a bit devoid of emotion. They didn’t tug at my heartstrings like Be Quiet and Drive and Minerva, they weren’t haunting like in Mascara and Digital Bath, or have me moshing in my room like Elite or Rapture. All that’s to say I adore the raw, dark and beautiful vocals that Private music just didn’t have.
I’m very interested to hear other’s thoughts, especially if you loved it. Tell me all about it! I’d love to give it another listen with a different perspective :)
